It's a must-visit for anyone looking to get a sense of the city's layout and its stunning surroundings. Another highlight is the Vieux Port, or Old Port, which serves as the city's vibrant heart. Here, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll, dine at waterfront restaurants, and watch the bustling activity of boats coming and going.
For those interested in cultural experiences, the Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean (MuCEM) is an essential stop. This museum showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Mediterranean region and is housed in a striking modern building at the water's edge. This national park features dramatic limestone cliffs, hidden coves, and crystal-clear waters, perfect for hiking, swimming, or simply enjoying the breathtaking scenery. Additionally, a visit to the Château d'If, made famous by Alexandre Dumas' novel *The Count of Monte Cristo*, is a fascinating excursion. Located on a small island just off the coast, this former fortress and prison offers insights into the region's history.
During December, the city is adorned with festive decorations, and the Christmas markets in Marseille provide a delightful experience with local crafts and seasonal treats. For those visiting the Marseille port, exploring the nearby attractions and enjoying the local cuisine, including the famous bouillabaisse, is highly recommended.

I love Marseille, living there I had positive experiences. Yes, in the hood there's a lot of trouble BUT it's the same in Paris. I lived there too and the hood has violence, the metro smells of pee and faeces and is filthy. The metro in Marseille is quite different, yes its smaller with just 2 lines but I didn't smell shit down there. The Marseillaise are much friendlier than Parisians. There are of course negative aspects of Marseille, it's definitely NOT a perfect city, neither is Paris. I prefer Avignon to be honest.

I’ve been here, it’s one of the most dangerous port city in France. As a female tourist I could not walk around by myself. I had to have someone with me and my hotel advised me not to walk at night, it was unlike Paris. Even my few friends from Marseille advised me to be very careful and not to visit alone. I was scared after dark, practically no one was walking around. Many illegal middle eastern immigrants were seen, I was told they were illegals by the local people and some criminal activities were seen. Also not many things to do and graphitis are everywhere, very unsightly and many buildings were run down. Not the nicest city to visit and you haven’t lost anything by nor visiting the city. There’re many nicer cities in France to visit.
