You should've also mentioned that Ty Lee's ancestors hiding in the Fire Nation is very possible due to Hanna of the Water Tribe hiding in the Fire Nation herself after escaping custody.

Hama was taking revenge on the fire nation not hiding she was trying to give them the same pain as the water Benders when they all got taken away and put in prison
Ryhofiet well she was having her revenge while staying hiding (to an extent). Nobody in the village she was at new she was a water bender.
Although it would be cool to try and find like other benders hiding out. We got to see Zuko and Iroh hide in the Earth Kingdom Hama in the Fire and we got to see Team Avatar hideout. I think if we looked hard enough we could find others who are in hiding.

Also love how Ty Lee's fighting style is pressure points; a way to defeat an opponent without killing them. The Air Nomads were renowned as peaceful, so what better way to defend yourself than with a way to temporarily knockout a threat! I doubt Ty Lee is a direct Air Nomad, but I can see her ancestors being Air Nomads that could hide without their arrows, and having them develop and pass down the pressure point fighting style!
Not all had arrows, Aang had Fire Nation friends and most of them did get along with other nations (they were peaceful). Also charka is very important to Air benders so it makes sense they learnt to disable bending by blocking the pointa

Another note: Everyone in the fire nation has very thin sharply shaped eyes but Ty Lee's are round... the same shape as Aang's eyes.
Eye shape is where I thought he was going when he mentioned the eyes. I noticed it too.

There is a running fan-theory that Pema (the wife of Aang’s son Tenzin) is the daughter or granddaughter of Ty Lee
Tenzin, Aang's airbending son, married Ty Lee's daughter Pema. Her having any kind of airbending in her blood could help explain why all her children are airbenders with great power. Even Aang struggled to get an airbending child. It just makes sense.
all air nomads are benders because of their strong connection to spirits. i think since aang was spiritual and katara wasn't, it made it difficult to get an airbending child. i think it was easy for tenzin and pema because tenzin is spiritual and even tho pema is a non bender, she's an air acolyte and is also like the air nomads just remove the airbending

They're both heirs, Zuko was an heir apparent, and Azula was an heir presumptive.
As firstborn, Zuko was the rightful heir. The fire nation must take the right of the firstborn really serious, if you look at how Azulon was pretty mad about Ozai asking to be firelord instead of Iroh, and the only things furthering Ozai's plan was either killing Zuko or Azulon.
The easiest way for Ozai to name Azula his heir was by somehow getting rid of Zuko. And so he simply memed him.
I read that air bender’s bending weakens when they are not spiritual. Avatar Kiyoshi’s mom was an air bender who become a criminal and her bending got weaker as a result. That is why she used fans (and eventually kiyoshi used them!!). The spiritual life of air nomads meant almost all were benders but if they had to hide and didn’t practice spirituality and air nomad culture, their bending would eventually faded away. Maybe the people who gained air bending in Harmonic conversion in LOK had air nomad Ancestry!!

She nearly quits the kyoshi warriors cuz of that reason in the comics but toph gets her to go to the circus she had joined to see the show and she sees her sisters alos becam like her yaknow they all jump like her and then the circus was attacked by bandits i think idk i dont really remember and when she tried to defeat one of the bandits that was a huge boi and then she fell down and hurt her knee so then her sisters came in and saved her so she realised why its great to have twins like that or idk (i dont remember a lot about the comics)so thats why she didn't quit
I think the Kyoshi Warriors were never her ending point. I think it’s just one step on her journey of self-discovery, learning how to be her own person, untethered to anyone. She had that sorta in the circus but Azula was still a looming threat even then, and she ruined it for Ty Lee. So Ty Lee would have to find something in which she feels secure to be herself

so i honestly see this as a big step for her character. where before she was doing everything she could to be different if even it didn’t make her happy, her joining the kyoshi warriors is where she is happy and it doesn’t matter if she’s different or not because she’s doing what makes her happy! thanks just my thoughts tho and i have read the comics yet.

Oh, I'd go even farther than that: I 100% believe she's an untrained airbender.
She's more than just 'lightfooted' -- look at the height of all her jumps! Nobody but Aang can jump that high. She wasn't just in the circus -- she was a trapeze performer in specific, and the brief glimpse we got of her at work implies that she's normally quite comfortable in midair. Her fighting style seems to emphasize speed and evasion, like Aang's does, and rather than aggression like Azula's or Mai's.
So yeah, Aang might have been the last actual survivor of the Air Nomads as they were before the, um, genocide, but I'm sure there are other untrained airbenders with refugee ancestry that just ... didn't turn up in canon often.

@@tori.e720 Those random people wre implied to be the descendants of non-bending Air nomads. The Air nomads also produced non-benderss and I read somewhere those were sent to the other nations as grown ups, basically exiled once they could fend for themselves. Ty Lee could also easily have been related to those non-bending Air nomads.
Ty Lee would be an unbeatable fighter if she had the ability to airbend, using bending for normal people then chi block for benders is a scary mix.
Good thing she is pretty cheerful and not aggressive then :D
Not to mention that air-bending could be horrifying if applied lethally. Creating and manipulating vacuums and pressure waves would be no joke and when added to her already impressive maneuverability she could practically fly.
And don't get me started on gale-force wind in opposing directions that, while not sharp as anime typically depicts it, could likely tear apart anything we've seen in the given world.
@@Draiocht012 Air bending is probably the most dangerous of all the elements in the show.... there is basically unlimited air and you can never run out of it... while even firebenders can run out of energy for their firebending given enough time as the energy comes from within them but is still used up... airbending however is completely unlimited...
Its a good thing that the airbenders are basically pacifists that avoid fighting at all costs otherwise they would be a threat far worse than the fire nation.
@@arcanumelite4853 I'm not sure about that. Nothing happens without the expenditure of energy. Just because Firebending is the only one we get an exact explanation of how the chi becomes the fire doesn't mean the others don't use their chi when they bend.
That being said I do agree it's the most potentially lethal.
The question is, why no benders ever learn chi blocking? It can't be they just think it's useless.
I think your theory is extremely possible. Referencing to Legends of Korra after the Harmonic Convergence, Airbenders suddenly started popping up everywhere for what seemed like no reason. But what if it wasn't for no reason? What if all the people who gained Airbending were all descendants of surviving Air Nomads? It's like you said, it's highly unlikely that all the Nomads were on the islands when the Fire Nation attacked. especially when they're supposed to be nomads.

I agree, but I think only people who "got" airbending are the ones who already were airbender who had weak powers so they never discovered them, because I think Pema is Ty Lee granddaughter and she didn't have airbending at the end of the show

Funny thing, in the novels, Avatar Kyoshi’s mother was an air nomad. However, after adopting a criminal lifestyle, her bending was spiritually blocked - which is where Kyoshi inherited her war fans.
@bryan diaz varela it didn't have to do with the criminal lifestyle directly. It's due to spirituality. Zaheer, although a criminal was very spiritual. Jesa, Kyoshi's mother, abandoned the spiritualistic lifestyle which caused her air bending to wane. So this theory about Ty Lee being an air nomad descendant is very plausible. Since air nomads would have to hide their ability and abandon their culture, traditions and lifestyle to the point that their air bending became dormant.

What y’all are forgetting is it wasn’t illegal to marry between nations before the war so it is completely possible for an air bender to have married a fire bender which could explain why ty lees family could’ve been so high up in status. It’s because they lived there before the war

This seems like a rather reasonable explanation. A former air nomad marrying into a high ranking Fire Nation family would probably also get away with swearing loyalty and renouncing any allegiance to the Air Nation if questioned.
Ty Lee is very clearly a Fire Nation citizen and sees herself as such. Even if her skills/abilities point towards an Air Nomad great grandparent or such, there is zero evidence to suggest they are explicitly taught to "keep the Air Nation alive" or anything like that.

What i would give to have a spin off focused on Zuko, Azula, Mai and Ty Lee. The beach episode has always been one of my favorites and it left me craving for more interactions between these four characters.

- One of Ty Lee’s sisters played Aang in the ember island players satire play
- Ty Lee’s combat skills would be suitable for an Airbender refugee fighting w/o their bending, but still fighting swiftly (just like Aang)
- The size of Ty Lee’s family could be a result of the family’s lineage trying to breed an Airbender

Theory: Monk Gyatso was part of the White Lotus. He played Pi-sho with Aang all the time. When Aang was gonna leave for a different temple Gyatso was gonna run away with him and take him somewhere affiliated with the white lotus. But Aang ran away. Source:Season 1 the storm. The white lotus has been around since Avatar Karuk.

I thought from the thumbnail you were going to mention Tenzin's daughter, Jinora, which also has an uncanny resemblance to Ty Lee. In any case, I do agree that there could have been Air nomads surviving the genocide of their culture, mostly hiding in the earth nation because, well, it is huge and have some safe spots that resisted the 100 years of war, but some could also hid on the north and south pole, and even in the fire nation. It is also possible that Ty Lee's airbender ancestors married into the fire nation before the war started, so even if her ancestry is known, nobody would suspect or see her in a bad light. Also, in LoK, the new air benders could be the descendants of the surviving air nomads, with their bending reawakening due to the harmonic convergence.

I remember discussing this topic with my brother when the show was airing. Her fighting style is exactly how I thought non-air bender fighting style would be. Which made me think that her family was a descendent from a marriage of an air nomad and a fire nation probably before the fire nation attack.
well, Air Bending is based on Bagua Zhang (which is the same style used by the Hyuugas if you watch Naruto) which focuses on redirecting your opponent's energy. Ty Lee's style is Kyusho Jitsu, which focuses on pressure points and disabling your opponent's limbs. Following the philosophy of redirecting energy, I would say either they would simply still learn Bagua Zhang, or Aikido would be favored. Aikido follows the same principle of redirecting energy, and is used by the Kyoshi warriors, who use fans as their main weapon, which would indicate favor of Air bending, which we see Kyoshi use often, despite her Earth Kingdom lineage.

This actually would explain the Korra series too.
In the legend of Korra, a bunch of people are suddenly able to airbend after a spiritual occurrence.
The people who are able to suddenly airbend seem to be random in the show, without any pattern.
But if you think about it, Bumi, Avatar Aangs first non-bender son, gets airbending. What are the odds of him, specifically him getting airbending. The answer is really really high!
He carries the genetic marker of an Airbender, and the spiritual occurrence triggered his bending.
That would mean for all other people in the world who obtained airbending, they would have carried the genetic marker for an Airbender too by ancestry, making the whole deal way less random, but actually quite clever.
This would also mean that there were in fact a lot of survivors after the initial attack.
That, or the airnomads were really into interracial reproduction.

I mean, logistically speaking since air nomads were traveling all over the place anyway, they were a lot more likely to come into frequent contact with other peoples than any of the other nations. So historically they probably did have a whole lot of interracial pairings.

Air Nomad genetics were all over the world of Avatar. This was proven when after the Harmonic Convergence in Legend of Korra, a bunch of people suddenly developed airbending abilities. They had the latent airbending genetics, and the influx of spiritual power activated the ability.

@@raphaelj2541 The show creators actually confirmed that everyone who's powers activated had an airbender ancestor. It didn't necessarily mean that it was a recent one. With Opal, it could be five hundred years aback, but the gene would be there, dormant and full of potential.

my theory is there's one gene for bending yes/no and another gene decides what nation's genes/bending to carry, like kid of a earth bender dad and water non-bender mum could be an earth bender (yes/earth-both from dad), non-bender that can pass on the earthbeding gene and have earth bending kids (no bending from mum/earth heriatage from dad), a water bender (bender from dad/water heriatage from mum) or water non bender (no/water-both from mum). This does not take into account dominant or recessive genes cause I'm not bothered to look into that and work it out
although katara's born to 2 non-benders, yeah? and her brother's a non-bender, so bending must be recessive

There's enough experience in every avatar ever to be proficient with countering all kinds of attacks. Lightning was obviously an exception. It helps that lightning literally moves at the speed of light, and someone generating it would be hard to hear from a distance in a room full of combat, but someone within a few feet of you should at least cause air to move in a way the avatar would notice.

The fact that some Airbenders escaped the inital attacks makes even more sense when you think about a ton of people became Airbenders after Harmonic Convergence (TLOK), and since we still dont know a real reason why, its very possible that they're descendants from those Airbenders who escaped. Especially since there were so many in Ba Sing Se which was the safest place for Airbenders to flee to.
Not to mention Aang’s own non-bender son became an Airbender after that event. Lends even more credit to certain people being ‘chosen’ based on their ancestry, giving them that last push to unlock the power.
I had this idea that it makes sense in the case of Zaheer, maybe he was a descendant of survivors of the air nomad genocide, with his ancestors keeping the culture alive in secret, which is why he was so obsessed with air nomad culture, and why it isn’t a complete diabolus ex machina that he got airbending powers.
This makes no sense. The writers just gave aang’s son the power to airbend solely because he was the only non-bender that was actually in the group. This is how I took it too. They never actually say in the series that they were the same age, and if they were it would have been pretty likely that another one of the sister's was friends with Azula and Mai too. She doesn't say she's identical septuplets, she says she has 6 sisters who look just like her. I have a friend who has 7 brothers and sisters of all different ages and they look uncannily alike. Any of the sisters who are close in age could easily be mistaken for identical twins. I never got the sense that she was literally identical, just that she was 1 of a huge number of sisters who all looked really similar and whose personalities bled together.
Just read the comics and you will see that they are definitely identical 🤦♂️
She is such a underrated character - she NEEDED more screen-time along when she got in with the Kyoshi Warriors rather than in the comics.
Other than her “Air Nomad” style, she’s really strong, flexible, and agile. Plus she introduced us to chi-blocking - which makes her the unique person she is. She even made Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors better - another reason why she should be considered the strongest non-bender.
She’s just a badass character with her nice vibe as well. One of the most unique characters in the show that deserved better honestly.

Don't forget that Air Nomads don't get their arrow tattoos straight away, they must earn it. That being said there were plenty of air nomad children and possibly some adults who escaped and didn't have the arrows, allowing them to hide in plain sight.
@ela robinsin It's referenced that you can become a "master" at any age, so long as you earn the right. Aang is the youngest to receive his arrow and become a master for create the air scooter.

I would like to add Ty Lee’s extreme agility as proof she was actually an airbender. 1) airbending is the only bending you can’t see, such as when Aang airbends in the blind bandit and everyone thinks he’s earth bending. 2) There are times when Ty Lee appears to be jumping off the air (s2 e8), and she can drop from higher distances than everyone else. Not saying she was trained, she was probably the first air bender in her family in generations, but I think she subconsciously used it in her fighting style.
I was thinking something similar because yes it's a cartoon but the feats of acrobatic ability is almost impossible in some scenes and the show does a pretty good job at being in the realm of the realistic (when it comes to normal human abilities and not bending obviously). Like most of the normal humans don't do anything to crazy or unrealistic except in a few unique scenes. Perhaps hers are just part of these but she is consistently able to preform these incredible feats so I thinks it's something to consider.
Exhibit B: Ty Lee running on those cable lines over the Prison in the Volcano Lake. Then she jumped 20 or so feet from one cable car to the other with ease.

I have to agree, also she's probably aware that she's an airbender but #1. Is illegal to be an airbender cause she'll get killed specially being so close to the fire nation. #2 she probably doesn't know how to airbend all that much because there's no one to teach her (like how Katara knew the basics, to move water around but still needed to learn more tricks) it never crossed my mind that she could be an airbender but I noticed she was 100% different her friends
@@Watcher-in-the-Dark Exactly this. Ty Lee is one of the few "non-benders" we have ever seen that jumps around the way she does and is as nimble as she is. Her appearance is also VERY out-of-line with the Fire Nation and even the circus master had a more distinguished fire nation appearance compared to her. Her clothes bear a heavy resemblance to Air Nomad styles, just with a modern girly twist and in muted Fire Nation colors, and she also strongly resembles Jinora.
Even if she has no bending, I can see a non-bender Air Nomad having that kind of physical nimbleness naturally, as it's just characteristic of their people to be that way. She also uses non-lethal methods to fight. I think this was all intentionally meant to hint that she had air nomad ancestors. She just sticks out like a sore thumb among fire nation citizens and the one character she she resembles the most-- not even just in her fighting and fashion styles, and physical appearance, but in personality-- is Aang. She's a bit more bubbly than even he is, but she has a similar approach to the world and is light-hearted and joyful like he is. She is also the only other character on the show with even remotely the same amount of agility and light-footedness.
I would assume, though, that Aang would notice her airbending when they fight. Aang has seen her before in action.

All air nomads were monks, and even if they weren't it is stated that air nomads have a 100% bender rate do to their deep connection to the spirit world. So anyone of air nomad descent would be an Airbender. The only exceptions to the air bender rule are Aangs childrens, which may be because of him being the Avatar, or Katara being incredibly predisposed to breed non benders

The one issue with that theory is Bumi (Aang and Katara's son) gained his air bending ability after harmonic convergence. Given that Tenzin was always an air bender, it's hard to argue that Bumi's air bending gene was suppressed.
@@jhawkkw87 the theory still makes sense, but I don't think it was repressed, I think it was a recessive gene. since the air nomads weren't having kids with other air nomads the air bending wasn't inherited but the genes were still passed on and now the people with the air bending gene are starting to have that gene show.

I like to think that all the people who got air-bending in Korra all have a recessive 'air-bending gene' which was awakened after harmonic convergence. Maybe the reason Aang only had one air-bender child is because air is the most recessive of all the 'bending' genes.
There has to be multiple genes involved in bending abilities. Neither of Sokka and Katara's parent's were benders, but Katara was, same with Toph's parent's neither were benders. Then you have where both Katara and Aang produce one child without the ability to bend, then Zuko's mother was never shown to have bending abilities, but both her children were benders. There's no good explanation for this other than multiple factors are needed not only to determine if someone is a bender, but also how types of bendings interact genetically. It should be pointed out that until Aang and Katara had children there are no known (to us) incidences of mixed bender relations/children.
@@gamers-fb5se Since Sokka and Katara's grandmother was from the north tribe, there is a chance she had a dormant water-bending gene, making Katara an atavism, same with Toph. I think Air is the most recessive of all the bending genes, even being more recessive than non-bending. That explains why Aang and Katara only had one air-bending child.

Just because the show is called "The last airbender" doesn't mean that he actually is, just that everyone thinks he is. It's entirely possible that more survived but stopped bending out of fear. Maybe they didn't even tell their kids and they never found out but were still able to bend in theory.
She does do almost impossible acrobatic feats in the show. Jumping from tree to tree as if she is getting a boost somehow, perhaps with latent subtle air bending? I doubt it but it is a interesting thought.

In theory, that's possible but even if Air Benders DID escape, it was likely not in large numbers, and the only feasible scenario would be Northern Air Nomads and Western Air Nomads escaping to the Northwestern Earth Kingdom, but having been detatched, it's likely they never even knew of the Fire Nation Colonies in the Earth Kingdom. The only way they would have been safe is if they got to Ba Sing Se, but getting that far would have been difficult in and of itself, and they didn't even know such an atrocity as the Air Nomad Genocide was even happening there. The only other strongholds were the North Pole, who really didn't involve themselves with outside conflicts unless it were necessary, and to them it wasn't, and Omashu, who was having an internal revolution, one that would take YEARS to get Bumi on the throne. In terms of escaped airbenders, the best bet would be southern Air Benders escaping to the south pole, and that DOES have some ground, because the Fire Nation seemed very dead set on eliminating any bender in the South Pole. It also has some ground in that Aang's intended destination when he ran away was the Southern Water Tribe. The Air Benders didn't have a very large population at all really, but the lack of any human remains in any of the air temples meant one of two things. Most people escaped, or most people were captured then killed on the Fire Nation homeland. Any escaped Air Benders in the Earth Kingdom, without Ba Sing Se's support, would likely have been inprisoning Air Benders themselves and selling them to the Fire Nation so as to avoid large scale conflict. ANY remaining Air Benders would have to live the rest of their lives in disguise, and Air Bending as a genetic trait was likely a weak one, and fizzled out over the 100 years. Aside from the small numbers of sky bison that were maintained, Air Bending was almost entirely a lost art. But Gran Gran says nobody had seen an Air Bender in 100 years, meaning Air Benders either didn't go there, or they lived as non-benders under false aliases. But by the time Aang was rediscovered, there's almost no way any other human air benders existed, even in secret. For that genetic trait to have survived in the Earth Kingdom is VERY unlikely, and that's assuming any Air Benders managed to live a normal life in the Earth Kingdom. Between the Fire Nation Colonies heavily affecting the western coast of the Earth Kingdom, the Earth Kingdom Provinces outside of Ba Sing Se and Omashu being millataristically challenged, the Earth Kingdom forces would see it more beneficial to themselves to capture remaining Air Benders and sell them as prisoners to the Fire Nation for a profit, than to openly protect them and risk the Fire Nation launching an invasion on the continent.
I'll go further. She IS an Airbender that refrains from explicitly bending to avoid persecution. Her bending goes into the acrobatics
Why wouldn't she come out and admit it when the war is over, get training from Aang? I can 100% buy her being the great grandchild of an airbender/air nomad based on how she looks, but there is no way she is an airbender unless even she doesn't know it.

Honestly, it wouldn’t be that hard for an air bender to escape if they didn’t yet earn their tattoos. They could fly off somewhere safe and just avoid using their bending and no one would know.

I do want to point out that, from knowing the history of the avatar universe, we can pretty much understand why there wasn't much of a distinction or discrimination between the benders and non-benders until Korra's era. The history of humans on avatar universe show us that people didn't use to have such powers. Rather, it was given to them by spirits (or was it spiritgods). So there is a certain awareness that, if you were born a bender, you should be grateful because you were "chosen by the spirits or whatever" and it's not like in HP where it's like, "Unless you are a powerful witch or wizard, you are a disgrace!" - at least to blood-purist families.
And, anyway, in HP universe, the history of mankind and muggle-kind is just practically erased to the point where we cannot identify why some humans produce magicals, or why some wizarding couples produce squibs.
I love the word squib. it only makes sense in a world where some form of magic exists, but it's kind of necessary. Just saying "non-bender" could mean that there is no bending lineage or that the parents were benders and the child wasn't. Squib makes a very specific distinction.
This video definitely missed the fact that in the Kyoshi novels, airbending can be strengthened and lost through lack of spirituality, which is why all the air nomads could air bend, but it wasn't all genetic. When you're running for your life, survivability becomes the main priority in life, so sacrificing spiritual beliefs could be highly likely.
And when you are fully spiritual and let go of earthly attachments you can fly like Zaheer. So you do have a strong point here indeed.
Another fact I noticed is that she can jump really high like Anng whenever he jumps like 10 feet

The theory isn't far-fetched. I mean she never once in the show fire bends, just like Mei doesn't fire bend wither. Mei is probably a Non-Bender. But Ty Lee could honestly be a Air bender just from being able to balance so well on trees, rocks and buildings.
Also Ty Lee doesn’t seem to have any of the physical attributes the others have (black hair, dark eyes.)
And she never hurts anyone, just disables them temporarily

Ty lee learned to fight at her school, then altered it to fit her chi blocking, which i believe she learned in the circus. She learned balance in the circus, and she is defensive because she lacks offence. Wall running also circus. Every point in the video and in the comment section is confirmation bias, and has no real ground to stand on she has no relation to air nomads just the circus, and a fire nation school.
@@possibly_meta7389 The eyes and different hair do give evidence of different heritage though. Perhaps not an air nomad but she certainly doesn't seem to be just descended from the Fire Nation.
I think those are the biggest factors if there is an argument for it as he is right almost all Fire Nation peoples have copper/amber eyes and black hair. The bubbly personality is also something to consider as almost all Fire Nation peoples are very aggressive, stern or with a bad temper.
She also fights differently than ANY other Fire Nation individual in the show and the aren't known for any kind of pressure point fighting styles. Even Mai and Azula have similar styles. They use different weapons but they both still use wide stances with overly offensive attacks. There is no reason to believe Ty would receive such special treatment from the teachers to learn a style that is so drastic a difference from literally all other Fire Nation fighting styles.
Again though the more physical traits are more evidence to the argument than her combat abilities. Just supporting evidence.

This actually matches up with the theory that *many* air nomads escaped, and suppressed their abilities. Some of their descendants were granted the ability to air bend again, after harmonic convergence (legend of Korra).

This is my 1st attempt at bringing a theory I want answered to light. Each nation has a highly elite ability that a select few benders can master outside of their normal elements. Some earth-benders can metal-bend (Toff). Some fire-benders can bend lightning (Azula). Some Water-benders can blood-bend (That witch lady, and Katara, even though she never uses it again.) And finally, air-benders can... what can they do? Its bothered be since I was in elementary school watching this show on cable at five A.M. Air-bender are seemingly the only ones who can't bend something else, and I've thought about it, but cannot think of what it would even be. I want SCB to answer that.
I think chi blocking may be part of the answer, actually (that, and flight). I think Ty Lee may be a specialized air bender than doesn’t necessarily bend “air,” but can still bend the aura/energy/air of a persons body. It’s kind of like Combustion Man, who couldn’t (or at least didn’t) fire bend in the traditional sense, but used combustion primarily.
Blood bending is brought up a lot in Korra, where we also see that Unassisted Flight is the adavanced bending technique for highly enlighted airbenders.
@@Schmedricks yeah, I've gotten that response before, and I disagree. It's not a whole lot more useful than flying with gliders, and on top of that, we even see azula fly with bending. Even though it's not the same, I don't think it's right to say that fire benders can fly and bend lightning while air can just fly. Finally, each if the other special bindings is technically a different substance, while flying is still just normal air.

@@parasyte6451 The unassisted flight is a symbol of complete detachment. And air doesn't really need a specialized form, since it's so overwhelmingly ubiquitous. An Earthbender can be separated from earth, a Waterbender can be separated from bodies of water, and extreme cold can hamper a Firebender's ability to produce flame (as well as fire being relatively easy to extinguish with the other three elements) An Airbender is always going to be surrounded by air.
I’ve heard this theory a lot and all the evidence really adds up. If they ever confirm this they could have the chance to add some more moments between Aang and Ty Lee

Problem with this theory is that there isn't any evidence and it's all speculation. All air nomads and descendants of air nomads are airbenders by birth, and Ty Lee is not an airbender.

Due to their spirituality. It is very likely that like the other nations, loss of spirituality lowers the amount of air benders, mix that with the chance of intermixing. Children between people of different nations often only bear the bending ability of one of their parents.

Something like this would only take a few lines to confirm, and wouldn't have too much of an effect on the show depending on when it's revealed. There are plenty of times where the villains are talking about Aang and she could say "my dad was an Airbender" or something, then just move on.

At this point I just wanna point out her fighting style. Look at it, especially her vertical jumps. Also partly horizontal. Throughout the series we never see someone fight like her except.....Aang. They do move In similar fashion while Ty lee has the upper hand on agility.
Look at other nonbending fighters. They all have pretty clear limitations! Even When suki climbs at the boiling rock to capture the warden we just see insane parkour skillls and ty lee even beat that in a lot of fighting scenes by the sheer height of her jumps for example.
Just Imagine she was brain washed so she wouldn't ectively use her bending powers and she's only using them in a really slight fashion subconciously!!
I mean I guess this is a good theory, but you have to remember that she was part of a fighting camp when she was younger and then moved to the circus. Its more possible that she combines what she learned from both than her being an airbender. Plus I dont think someone cant brainwash her into not using her airbending if she did have any, its more like for her to have her chi blocked. Tbh I just think its more obvious that she isnt a bender but does carry it as a gene. Like she could be a descendant rather than being a full bender.
