Watched countless beginner SUP Videos and this one is by far the clearest and most useful. My first SUP is arriving this month and I cannot wait to put these tips to use!
Hey. I'm sorry to see so few views. Your video was excellent. I am a 61 year old, fat man and I have recently taken up SUP for fun and fitness. I have watched a MANY "how to" videos and many are excellent presenting the same (more-or-less) best techniques as you. However, your detailed descriptions and many small steps is very well done. I have been practicing (my own inflatable arrives tomorrow) on a local lake with a lot of boat traffic. I have been handling the wakes pretty well standing, but last Saturday I was swamped by big one. I should have dropped to my knees, but I don't know how to do that and until I watched your video I had not thought about HOW I would do that. Immediately after watching your video, I tried on the floor and i am glad i did. Thanks, can't wait to get out on the water and practice some sumo squats.
Well done Eddie! I’m a 61 year young female kayaker who had a strong urge to paddle board. I bought a SUP from Aldi. Yes, ALDI. It’s fantastic. Before I took to the lake, I watched this video 3 or 4 times. My plan that first day on the water was to just paddle my SUP around the lake on my knees. Instead, I did it all - knees, standing, wide turns, braking, U turn. So stinkin’ fun!! Thanks for making this sport easy to learn and a super fun first experience. I’m hooked!YOU ROCK❣️
I'm 54 and always wanted a kayak. Went out yesterday and tried a friends kayak and paddle board and my mind has been changed. It's sooo hard, but watching your videos I think I'll do a little better. Definitely getting a paddle board. Thank you.
Thanks for the help and tips. We’re going tomorrow and it’s my second time. I’m gonna try these techniques. It was so fun the first time I tried so can’t wait till the morning.
100 100 100 for this, simple, easy to follow, clear and to the main point. Id take his class if im close by. Now im ready to go paddle, seriously just watched it again right before i go paddle.
Thanks Eddy this is the most clearly explained lesson I’ve watched. I’m 71 and started paddling last year. I have enjoyed it from the start but was never sure if my technique was correct. Thanks for making it so clear. Will definitely be watching your other videos.
My paddle board is being delivered today, and I can't wait to get started, after watching this video I feel much more confident about getting out for the first time. Many thanks 🤗
Sorry to repeat what others have said, but this is an excellent video and Eddie has done a fantastic job explaining the basics. Looking forward to putting these tips to use. Thank you!
Nice! Thank you I went on a SUP for the first time today and I asked all those questions out loud and I got no answers from near by SUPers, so thank you!
Nice video well done. I think it shows that you're an instructor so you know how to teach beginners in a way that makes sense to us and that we'll remember.
Excellent video. I’m new to paddle boarding, but do have some experience with basic kayaking, so I know some of the paddle techniques, but this went beyond what I thought I needed to know for SUP. Great and simple explanation that makes sense. Thank you!
I live on a lake and have been dying to get on this water, so I ordered a paddleboard and just received it today. I was looking for video instruction for beginners and this one was the most informative I've found! Now, to hit the water! Thank you! I will be looking for more videos from you!
Maybe include some videos on transporting paddle board on top of vehicle. how to easily mount dismount. Also making the paddle boarding experience a workout for the core as you become more experienced, etc.
I'm about to go out for the first time with a friend in a couple of hours (I'm clumsy, fingers crossed 😂). Your video was very helpful, and had a few extra trips than the other videos I watched had. Thank you.
thanks man, very informative ..new to sup ,60yrs young..was a mad keen sailboarder in the 90's...but,too many years have passed since then...my balance has disappeared ,fatter too. ...i will stick with your lessons koa...thanks..cheers from australia...
Excellent Video. You go over everything. Just ordered my SUP so I'm a newbie. I'm from Hermosa Beach but now live on Coeur d'Alene lake in north Idaho. The lake has a lot of boat traffic so I'm hoping I really learned something from your video!!
Thanks so much to make and share this clear video. I had my first experience 2 days ago with a rented SUP board, I saw some videos before do it and I have to say some of them were good but this one is definitely better, I missed but I will see it more than once before go to the water next time in my own board (which will arrive next week) Just as comment, no sure if other people have this experience as beginner: I got "burnt" in some parts in my fingers with the paddle, by the friction. I bought gloves for next time despite I have no seen people using them for this sport. I do prefer look weird than hurt me again. Thanks again for your video ;)
Excellent video thank you! I only saw this after my first SUP experience this evening which involved taking several splashes when trying to stand. I’m hoping your explanations will make it easier next time! I have very tight Achilles so can’t squat very low with flat feet .. which doesn’t seem to aid standing. I’m also 6’ so centre of gravity higher. Any extra tips please on maintaining balance when going to stand, and once stood?
Great video! Learned a lot....Just got my first paddle board last week and tried it for the first time at Newport Dunes on Christmas Day......I took a splash and it was harder than I thought but I'm now addicted and am looking forward to my next experience
Well explained, thanks for sharing! :) Last year I bought the Aqua Marina Supertrip board and I'm still very happy with it (easy handling, stable, good price-performance, one board two people and a lot of fun)! ;)
Thanks for the very informative video. This is the best one I seen. I have a question for you. How to get back on the board in shallow water and deeper water?
Awesome tips man! For me it doesn't work to look at the horizon or right in front, it feels like falling 😂 but instead, when I look down at the tip of the board I can connect with it and I balance perfectly. Pretty terrifying experience 😅 but I'll keep at it
After watching this, I feel like I don't need a private lesson. Your demonstration was perfection! However, if you still recommend a trainer for my first time, then I'll get one!
Hi Britt! Thanks for watching! At the end of the day it's totally up to you. The great side of a trainer is you'll be able to learn things much faster and avoid mistakes early on :)
Thanks for sharing all the details. I just had my first time paddle boarding, I just can’t stand up😅 I found it’s really comfortable sitting on the board
I have hip and lower back problems is there another way to stand up from kneeling? I don't have the power to get into the squat position. If so could you maybe make up a video as I found this one very helpful x
Hey Karen, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. This question might be best answered by your chiropractor. I know people have started from a sitting position since they can't kneel the whole time. However, sumo squatting to get back up is the safest way as your are using your thighs and calves to support your lower back.
Have you tried SUP Ball yet ? According to the internet, Stand Up Paddle Ball is a combination of netball, water polo, lacrosse, and rugby .. probably easier just to say football (soccer) on water. It has come to the UK now, from Australia, where the sport originated and looks like fun. Regards from the UK
Thank you for a great video I really enjoyed it, I was just curious about the direction of the paddle, I have always held my paddle the way that you show, but recently I have seen photos and videos of people holding it the other way with the angle pointing away from you. Is this just a matter of preference or is there a correct way to hold the paddle?
The paddle is designed to help you glide across the water. When you flip it changes to scooping which will deplete your stamina much faster and throw you more off balance. Kayaks scoop water as they are lower to the ground and center of gravity. Remember when paddle boarding your goal is to glide across the water as efficiently as possible.
Sorry for not getting to this sooner. While paddle boarding you have a high center of gravity which means you need to glide across the water rather scooping it. Scooping the water exerts too much energy and affects your balance. In kayaks you have a lower center of gravity so "scooping" is efficient since the paddles are also closer to you to.
Great vid. I've figured some of this stuff out myself, but I'm still working on balance. Here's a question. I have a larger sup & a smaller one for surfing. I've noticed that in vids, sometimes I see people paddling low volume sups with their feet pretty close together. I've always placed mine at about shoulder width. Do you have any advice on stance width?
For stability, you should always paddle shoulder width apart. As you bring them closer together your range to adjust is reduced. This method is generally used for narrower boards for more speed. You can paddle them closer together, it requires a pretty good measure of balance and experience.
Welcome, everyone. Let me know in the comments any questions or additional tips you’d like to share.

I have not, but that sounds really interesting. I'll have to check it out!
It's best to try them in calm flat water though for full experience ie not falling off too much

What to do if fall of it in sea with life jacket on, hard to get back on sup
Should the paddle, in this case the logo facing toward you, so you hold water and not slip the water?

Good video but why do you use the paddle like that
