  • Exploring the oldest slate mine in Ffestiniog with Antonio. First mined in 1760, it was one of the largest, with spectacular views and an unique crater, a very different slate mine.
Link to Patterdale diving Diffwys mine, see what's down the flooded incline:

Christopher if I lived there I would spend every waking moment exploring. Cheers to Antonio, he is my other favorite explorer.

They must have kept the mines relatively clean as there is so little rubbish for the amount of men there. Can you even imagine what state it would be in today with a modern work force. 😖

Back in the day they didn't have any desposable items, just a lunch box, and tea, so not much rubbish. I could show you a mine which closed in 90's and there is one big chamber full of rubbish, crisp packets, shopping bags, disgusting. They probably threw slate waste on top to hide it but mine closed before they had chance

Slack and Cox were based in Manchester 1890 to 1984 but had a distribution centre in Llandudno. The bottle could have been water, ginger beer, vi tonica (their own tonic) or several other soft drinks. Edit: at 32:50 that one place you want to get to.. maybe... just maybe... some point next year, you show me where it is and I'll shin up and/or (Petzl pulse) bolt up to it and fix a rope for you?

Yes, I've seen 3 of those slack and Cox bottles. One in Diffwys, one in Oakeleys and also Rhosydd.
As for the level higher up, I'll probably get my bum into gear, I've got hammer drill, but always put it off walking up with it and a couple of batteries😩.

@@shonkytours2039 with a softer rock like slate and shallow small holes (like 8mm pulse) you can get away with a little hammer drill which is good as you can drill one handed and easier carry. When it's chert or rhyolite that's a different story (then you need the big-boy, heavy ******). You could probably also explore that upper level from nearer the start of the video if you went tooled up. Small holes and pulse or concrete screws so as not to leave bolts/damage. Got to preserve the industrial archeology. I'll wait for you to video those levels, if not I might have to do it myself ;)

@@shonkytours2039 also.. surprised that a miner left his bottle behind, there would have been a penny maybe two on the return!
