Thanks for sharing this deconstruction of the temperature readings in the pet carrier. I watched it thinking about what I haul under the seat and was trying to remember if I've ever put a fuel bottle under the seat. I don't think I have. The few times I brought fuel along it was in a top case and the weather was cold. The pet carrier case has raised some concerns for me though in the past -- primarily in regard to cameras. I've had more than a few screws vibrate free from cameras. So now my point and shoot rides in my right jacket pocket, and the good cameras are always in a padded case or bag of some sort and then usually in the top case. Your thoroughness in approach and shooting of your videos is top-notch. As I've said before, you are far more patient than I am in regard to video production. Great stuff!
Thanks! So far most of the cargo in mine has been groceries, and I'm close enough to the store that I haven't worried about the temperature. Thank you for the kind words. I felt like I was quick and sloppy with the shooting and editing on this one. As you say, it can take some real effort and patience sometimes!
Very Scientific video, lol. I can actually tell that your Vespa is the Impulsive Orange too. Depending on the lighting situation, it can sometimes look more red. But the Orange really popped out in this video. LOVE IT!
Thanks! Kinda nerdy, LOL! The orange seems really difficult for cameras to capture. More often than not, they color balance it towards red, but it is a nice color that continues to grow on me.
Great video! always wondered how hot it got under the seat and I have heard it discussed in other videos but never tested. Agree that its better to be safe than sorry, you do not want to create your own ejector seat! Wish I had such beautiful scenery to ride around! This one earned a sub from me.
I can´t believe how entertaining your videos are. Calm, smooth voice, I love the small issues that are discussed, heat under the seat. I know my 300 get plenty hot so I try to keep my grocery shopping between my legs just in case. One thing, the GTS is pretty good offroad as well, not at speeds, but for cruising. Try to do an "off-road" video!
I just discovered and watched your two Vespa videos and very much enjoyed them ! Please keep there Vespa videos coming, especially camping and driving around Colorado. My son lives near the entrance of Estes in Loveland. Thanks a bunch for these.
I wrapped the outside of the bucket of my '21 GTV with Thermo-Tec automotive heat barrier tape to keep some of the heat away. That seemed to work a bit. I also added one of the padded inserts on the inside. That looks great and added a little help too. You do lose just a little space in the bucket by adding one of them. The whole "Pet" thing under the seat is scary. I was in awe at how many actual questions I received after purchasing the padded liner about "does it make it more comfortable" for pets.
I noticed that too when I saw your camping video and I was a little puzzled 🤔 it’s something I would never do,even if it complies European regulations…while you were at it it would have been great to test the temperature of the glove compartment as well…I usually store my wallet,my home keys 🔑 and my iPhone there and…there are days when I found keys pretty hot to the touch while the wallet and iPhone doesn’t seem to be stressed that much (I put these two items on the left side of the compartment while they keys at the very right…it shouldn’t change but who knows). Informing video ,thank you very much. Ps: here in Europe we don’t have that sticker with “no pets” 🙀
For some reason, it never crossed my mind. I'm used to putting it in panniers on my "big" bike, where ventilation and heat are non-issues. I guess I was focused on the amount of space and using it efficiently and just wasn't thinking. When I realized it, I thought it would be good to address the issue.
Yep it sure does get hot under there so I’ve lined mine with foam and silver foil backing radiator foil that’s brought the heat down quite a bit and you’re right it gets hotter the longer you leave it standing after a ride not so much of an issue when you’re riding it, Eric uk 🇬🇧
It's not going to bring anything new Vespa-related so don't hold your breath...some friend of mine who live near Pontedera saw a potential Vespa with 400cc engine, the same one as the Beverly (in USA it's called something else) but I heard the same story with the previous 350cc Euro 4 engine so...unless I see it in Eicma or in a dealer store it's just a rumor for me...
I have owned several scooters, including 3 Vespas. My current scooter is a 2006 GT200 (I don't ride computers, carbureted all the way) I have carried gasoline in Gatorade bottles under the seat on a couple of scooters with no issues. My current Vespa has a color matched Vespa top box, a clamp on front rack, (made by Faco), and a small rack mounted on top of the battery cover. When I need to carry extra fuel, I carry it in the top box. But I do not and never have used any special kind of container to carry it in. Gatorade bottles on scooters, I have carried one gallon and five quart plastic oil jugs full of gasoline on motorcycles in saddlebags with no problems. I've done that for over 4 decades. I live in AZ, where the ambient temperature can get up to 120 degrees F in the summer. I just turned 64, and am partially disabled (which is why I am now riding scooters instead of motorcycles) I don't ride in temperatures like that. I'm not worried about fuel, but when it is that hot, it is easy to succumb to heat exhaustion and become disoriented. Plus it's just plain miserable. I have put over 42,000 miles on my Vespa GT200, taken 2 week trips (staying in motels, no longer able to camp) and so far haven't had a single problem. Don't forget that the fuel tank on a Vespa is also under the seat.
All good points. I'm not worried about the heat level. I think the big takeaways was that if you do have something you don't want to get too hot, don't leave it under the seat AFTER you ride and the bike is just sitting there hot.
I’ve never heard of it called a pet carrier before 😂 It gets pretty warm on my Vespa ET4 under the seat although I’ve never thought this much into it as I use the bike for short local journeys although leaving my camera under the seat earlier I removed the bucket for a few minutes while I took my helmet and coat off and locked the bike up to a railing.
Growing up on the road trips around Australia with Dad in 70s and early 80s, we would cook meat wrapped in foil on our V6 car engine. The Vespa heated seat reminds me so much of my chargrilled meat and potato trips.
Thinking about adding a muffin fan thermally activated and actually use the side vent so the kittens don’t sweat. But seriously I wonder if that isn’t such a bad idea
Sounds complicated, but I guess it depends on what you are after. I'd say just don't keep your kittens or your ice cream in there too long. Put the eggs you want to hatch in there instead!
I was thinking about this just the other day after a 4 hour ride. I wonder if an insulated liner or bag would make any significant difference. Either way, it seems like plastic would be the best option for carrying any sort of gas. Not sure if they make any camping canisters in plastic though.
Maybe you could do a follow up video to test what happens if you have the canister in there with the gas flowing. Just make sure you don't have any pets in there.
in my opnion. yup, my LX150 (2011)/2012 model) under the seat is veryyy hot. Compare to my yamaha and pgo scooter, my lx150 is carburettor version. I thought the newer model is better and not that hot?
Nicely done. I also have a gts 300 and yes it gets hot in the bucket. Also have a Piaggio Liberty 150 and the bucket isn’t very hot. Question I want to carry a tire plug kit with co2 cartridges on my 300. Any thoughts?
I don’t have any particular insights. The first thought that comes to mind is that co2 cartridges are usually pretty small. I might stash them in the front dash compartment? How do you like the Liberty?
I've been looking for one of the thermally insulated shopping bags - the light weight foil-lined plastic - for my groceries, but all the stores around here are out of stock.
Hi enjoy your videos but just to give you a heads up they do make reserve tank that is made out of plastic I have used them myself for long trips and it fits underneath the pet carrier or Storage box For VESPA GTS 125 300 250 Auxiliary Fuel Tank 5L Capacity Seat Bucket Endurance 120-140km with Oil Extraction Tools Motorcycle
I guess you could get a phone mount that clips on the mirror stem. That seems like the most common solution anyway. Of course you may be trying to charge something other than a phone... LOL!
I actually don’t think it’s too hot under the seat necessarily. As I showed near the end of the video, the highest temperature under the seat was about the same as it was in a bag sitting in the sun. Now that I know how hot it gets, I’ll just be thoughtful about what I put in there. I also won’t leave temperature sensitive things there when I park after a ride because the hottest temperature was achieved when it was just sitting still with a hot engine.
Great video.....I wonder if the heat that is generated under the seat contributes to the fuel pump issues Vespa are still having on their 2022 bikes. It was just a thought.
I have no idea. Seems hot enough to make you think about how you carry your groceries, but I'm not sure if it would affect a fuel pump? Dunno, but an interesting thought.
I need to pay closer attention I guess. I never notice it coming on on the Vespa. On my Tenere it is annoyingly loud. I guess the Vespa is so quiet that I don't even notice. I would assume that it did simply because it was about 90 degrees in the shade, the sun was quite hot, and I rode for an hour. Stop-and-go traffic would be worse, but I don't often encounter that situation.
It is a joke. Here in North America the new Vespas actually have a sticker in there that warns against carrying pets in the under-seat compartment. It is so stupid that we joke about it being a "pet carrier." ;)
Moral of the story: Don't subject or expose your butt to more gas than is absolutely necessary. Especially in a hot, enclosed environment. Perhaps that's one reason why we always instinctually crack a window while driving or riding in a car prior to passing gas. It may not always be to spare our companions from an odourous assault but subconsciously a safety issue. God forbid that a propane/butane blend should mix with methane in a closed heated space.
Typo! You are correct. I have a typo in the text. Ugh. Thank you for pointing that out. Now I have to see if I can fix it somehow without deleting, and re-uploading the video…

Seriously?!!! It’s hard to imagine anyone actually thinking that’s a good place for a pet! (Says the guy who put his gas canister in there… 😂)
Cool, Sgtshak. Could you share some pictures or video, please?
Good and informative video. Inquiring minds and all.....
This video is awesome!!! I knew it would get hot, but had no idea!!! Will def change what / how I store things, once I finally get my Vespa...
Thx for geeking out. Really helpful.
👏 i’ve aways wanted to do this. aways been concerned about storing my rechargeable air pump under the seat - worried about the lithium battery 🔥
I think if under the seat was filled with stuff, and the canister was at the top/ put in last, then I think there wouldn’t be as much of a heat issue.
Thanks Mark. Glad you found it too! Good luck with your bike search.
50ºC (122ºF) is the maximum recommended temperature for storage of camping gas. BTW 111ºF is not 40ºC it's 44ºC. Overall good safety tip. Thank you.

interesting set of thermal experiments. Will you be writing it up and submitting it for publication and peer review?
Nope. I’m lucky if I can convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius!
so one should take break in a long tour. if the seat section is kept open it may bring better result (lower temp)
