He’s scheduled to meet with Kim Jong-un.” Stock photo, no video. That’s ALL he’d have gotten from my news service from then til now. One SHORT paragraph and an old picture…
Because the press has been entirely privitized and deregulated in the 1980's. Before there were standards of truth that you had to meet to call yourself a news channel. But those have been entirely abandoned and news just puts on whatever draws a crowd and Trump does do that.
I think there need to be regulations and truth standards for news organizations. That to call yourself a "news" organization you have to meet certain standards. Of course you can also report without calling yourself news which I do think is important to not give the government too much power. But I do think the government should make sure people can roughly trust "news".
I don't think the government should suppress news like it is doing with TikTok. It should just have standards and promote news that is trustworthy. How things are now in the vast, vast majority of cases the government benefits from the truth. Cause usually they get attacked for the things the megacorps do or have to deal with fake news destabilizing the system. It is important though that the only standard that goes is truthfulness. That you can sue a channel for knowingly spreading fake news but for no other reason. It wouldn't completely root out fake news as you can still lie by ommission or use manipulative language but it would make it more difficult.
I also would like a public news broadcast that's entirely government funded that goes alongside the corporate news. They can report on the crimes of the megacorps that corporate news can not cause they would be shut down if they did.
I don't think we should trust either government or megacorps to tell us the truth. We should have both and also leave the door open for fake news so that no bubble is completely sealed. But how it is now with no standards and complete corporate control is really bad.
