Same here - only my Saul-on-the-road-to-Damascus moment came in '71 when my sister came home with this album that she'd borrowed from a friend. As a 12yr old kid who had been strictly classically trained as a trumpet player, it was utterly life-changing. Compared to the great symphonies and concertos that had been rammed down my throat, this was the most exciting music that I'd ever heard. That first minute of Speed King.....unbelievable! Instead of been played, it sounded like the instruments were being tortured - but in a new and innovative way. That was MUSIC to me and things were never going to be the same ever again!! And they never have been.
Ritchie was heads and shoulders above his contemporaries his guitar riffs and progressions forged the way for modern hard rock and heavy metal. This album IS the heaviest that DP ever released

Ritchie Blackmore is the reason why I bought a Stratocaster when I was 14! I used to listen to "Made In Japan" over and over. Me and my father used to blast it in the car a lot! The man in Black was my inspiration and guitar hero. I love his Blackmore's Night group, but do really miss him in the rock and neo classical metal genre. Ritchie began using slide later in his career. I loved how expressive his beautiful slide playing could be when he chose to use it in that way. My favorite example was the song "Vielleicht Das Nächster Zeit".
Out of all classic rock bands of the time (Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Alice Cooper, UFO) I like Deep Purple the best, maybe because they have that classical music influence that Jon Lord brought.
This album is seriously underrated. It's packed with epic tracks that blur the lines of early prog rock. It could easily have been as big as any Zepplin album with the right promotion.

1000 times means about 40 years, I think, if you listen to an album a lot. It's about 250 times in 10 years. I listen to a lot of music, and during the last 10 years I have listened to a few albums, not much more than 250 times. I listen to music every day. I listen to more music than any other person I know. I have some songs that I have listened to over 700 times (during the last 10 years), but not the whole album. 1,000 times is a lot for the whole album. Usually, when I stick to one album, it probably won't get the heavy listening for much longer than one month, and it still won't get much more than 100 times. I don't think I have albums that I have listened to 1000 times. 500 for sure, but not 1000. Songs yes. Highway Star is definitely the most Deep Purple song I have heard, but I doubt I have heard it 1000 times. I have listened to Deep Purple since 1994; for me, that's almost 30 years, but I also listen to other bands and enjoy other types of music (heavy metal, prog rock, synth pop, new age, folk, ethnic, jazz, classical, country). There have been years when I have listened to Deep Purple very little. But still I consider Deep Purple my favorite band of all.
IMO Child In Time has no peer as the best hard rock song of all time, both the original studio and live Made In Japan versions. The lead breaks (and that's what we all wanted back then, right?) in both are phenomenal and exciting

I saw Deep Purple Newcastle City Hall (England) February 1971 - I was 15. I had the LP given as a birthday present. They played numbers from this LP and they absolutely blew me away. I was playing guitar in a band at the time and I wanted to be Blackmore. My favourite rock album.
Man, I am right there with you, though it is my second-favorite rock album of all time. I still love Deep Purple and remain in awe of Ian Paice. When I first heard "in Rock" I was a 13-year old jazz drummer, and generally looked down my nose at rock drummers. By the time I'd listened my way through Flight of the Rat I knew I was a hard rock drummer. I remained one for another 45 years.
This was the album which introduced me to rock as a ten year old and Deep Purple are still one of my favourite bands 51 years later. Blackmore, Gillan, Lord, Glover and Paice were absolutely the best line up and I am still blown away whenever I listen to Child in Time. That one track really shows them as a group of musicians who were highly talented and very much at the top of their game.

@jasc4364 that's the beautiful thing about music. We have the freedom to like or dislike whatever we want to. I see Child in Time as a masterclass of musicianship yet you find it boring. You're allowed to, that's cool 😎
@steveturner6770 Blackmore had a knack of using the right tone for any situation. He also led the band and they followed. Great stuff Carl... I first heard the Deep Purple "In Rock" album at a friend's house in 1971 or '72 and it blew me away! The opening track "Speed King" left me breathless. A short time later in 1972, I saw Deep Purple play a live concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. This was right after they released the epic multi-platinum album "Machine Head". Ritchie Blackmore's blistering guitar playing just ripped your face off! He was like a wizard on stage. It was clear to everyone in the audience he "owned" the stage. **NOTE: earlier in June '72 I saw Led Zeppelin play a live concert in Baltimore, MD. I sometimes forget how hard rocking this album was. It may not have had the big radio hits that other Deep Purple albums had, but it had some of the best riffage (is that a word??). Blackmore is often overshadowed by other guitarists of the time, but he shouldn't be. He wrote some of the most memorable riffs of the "classic rock" period. And if anyone asks how could an organ be in a hard rock/heavy metal song, just reply "Jon Lord". He just looks metal! One thing you can always say about the album - it has great song titles!
He overshadowed by others only in USA. I don't know why Americans think that there were only Page or Clapton, but in Europe, USSR, Japan, China we are all knew Ritchie was way better

He overshadowed by others only in USA. I don't know why Americans think that there were only Page or Clapton, but in Europe, USSR, Japan, China we are all knew Ritchie was way better
I would sit in the kitchen at my parents with my head pressed up against the record player playing this endlessly. The intro to Speed King was absolutely mesmerising.
Man I feel you!!
Well done Carl. I enjoy your enthusiasm and of course your playing! It’s a great rock album!!
Thank you!!
Wow! Memories."In Rock" was the first album I ever owned along with a 45 RPM of Rocky Mountain Way. Thanks Carl!
Bloodsucker has always been my favourite track too, although they're all excellent.
Thank you so much, I loved this video going through the album riff by riff. Also, your playing is fantastic and really captures Blackmores style. 🙂🤟🏻👍🏻
Wow, thank you!
The Mighty Purple! Same here, I listened to this album all the time learning the riffs.
In Rock is still one of my favourites even after all these years, though I got old. Bring back my teen memory. By the way, your playing is great. Stay safe, healthy and keep rocking...
Thank you so much!!!!
I like this man's guitar sound.
Ha awesome. This album came out when I was 2 and it is one of my favorites of all time as well!
Great analysis, Carl. It´s also one of my favourite albums of all time. By the way, your playing and your guitar tone is great. I think you are the best vintage rock guitar instructor on the net. Keep on rockin`. Greetings from Germany.
Greetings Germany!! Love you too!!!

These album analysis videos are el fantastico, Carl! Bravo!
First heard this around 1970 right before I went into the Army. Like a lightening bolt! For music at that time, it was incredible. While in the Army I got to see them around the Made in Japan tour. Holy Shit! Black Night was one of those obscure songs that kicked. One other great song that came out around that time was "Blindman"! whoaaaaa
Great record...I'm especially a huge fan of 'Black Night"... One of my fave riffs to play.. It just swings epic cool!.. When it comes to the greats... No matter what era you examine ones chronological period... you're due to find genius in there somewhere... DP was no exception... Like Zep... The body of work and longevity speaks for itself... Praise the Rock Godz!😎✌🤟
Amen brother!!
Hey Nick, Your name looks familiar. You didn't play with an old schoolmate of mine named Chris by any chance?
@@massimosaffioti8798 Chris whom?
@@nickcosta8062 Dimesones aka Big New York.
@@massimosaffioti8798 sorry I cannot say I know of them...
thank you carl for putting so much insight into each song. i am a rock fan because of purple...and i am damn blessed !!
This was my first album. What a start !
Wow!
Hi Carl, I just watched this from my UA-cam suggestions, I did not know of you before. Seriously great video👍 I'm looking forward to seeing more of your vids
Awesome, thank you!
LOVE this album!!! In Rock and Machine Head were constantly on my turntable as a teenager. "Child in Time" is my absolute favorite DP song!
Wow really enjoyed this. My Dad saw deep purple in Sheffield just before the band set off to Japan and did propably the best live rock record ever 'made in Japan.' loved the breakdown of this music redefining album
I think that’s the greatest live rock album ever!
Awesome band!!
Couldn’t agree more. That first track def made a point
Il migliore hard rock album di tutti i tempi.
Speed king, Child in time, bloodsucker, flight of the rat, hard lovin' man, Into the fire ... what else ? the best hr album of all times from the best hr band of all times !
Yes!!!
My favourite of all time also
I bought this album 1972 when i was 12 years old and was completely blown away. I also bought Black sabbath album paranoid and i was so happy.
Super analysis Carl! In Rock is among my top 10 favourite albums of all time as well; and Ritchie Blackmore, without question, is absolutely my favourite guitarist ever. You have very effectively broken down key elements of each song for which I have always wondered how they were done - this is immensely helpful to me going forward! Thank you for such an excellent spotlight on one of the greatest albums / greatest guitar players in rock history.
Glad it helps!! I too would have loved a video like this!!
I've always preferred DP to Led Zep and Ritchie was the man who got me into guitar (together with David Gilmoir)
Led Who? … just kiddin, Zep are great, but to me DP are the best!
@@ivanvernillo i respectfully disagree...nobody..i mean nobody compares to the 4 boys
@@davidgreene7676 no problem David, is matter of taste :-)
