I stopped playing or paying attention just as Shilton was in his ascendency. His technique is conservative rather than "brilliant": in this compilation you see a much higher percentage of caught balls than in "best saves" videos of nearly all other keepers. He rarely punches: even the most desperate saves are guided with palm or fingers. There are very few-follow-up shots here. Solid anticipation accompanied by short-range reflex. One of you mentioned (the now probably finished) Neuer: I think the current crop--De Gea, Courtois, Ter Stegen--are also a joy to watch, but the game has changed so much that today's keeper less often faces the task of imposing order on chaos as Shilton did. Schmeichel the Elder was part of that transition, and it's interesting to watch him deal with old-style scrambles as well as new-style "laser" football.
I go back and forth on if Oliver Kahn or Peter Shilton was the best ever.
I still don’t know, but I’ll say this if Shilton played for Germany they would have won every World Cup in the 80s.
Harold, "Tony Schumacher", was better than both, but there is very little video footage out there on Tony. And this is coming from a HUGE Peter Shilton fan. I used to watch his training videos when I was in high school and I couldn't believe how athletic such a big man (for the times) actually was. He was indeed, a "Freak."

I totally agree. Schumacher was brilliant! At his best, he probably was the best ever. But he didn’t have the consistency of Shilton. Schumacher wrote in his book that he thought Shilton was the best gk in Europe (and at that time that meant the world). I never saw Shilton have a bad game. I did see Schumacher have a few bad games, like the 86WC final. I still love watching Schumacher play (youtube), and wish I was 1/10 as good. I would take either one over any gk in the world right now. The art of gk is dying with these spread-eagle foot saves, or should I say misses.
@@stevedixon4787 Very true my friend. Manuel Neuer is the only keeper that I enjoy watching anymore, because he is such a good athlete. Keepers went "spread-eagle" because they got tired of saving shots with their faces, and modern day ball technology is so much more advanced than in the 80's. I'm amazed guys save any shots nowadays to be honest.

From what I’ve seen modern goalkeeping coaches are not teaching the Shilton/ Schumacher technique. I think because it’s easier to just buy an established goalkeeper then build a young GK into a great GK. And modern GK coaching thought (at least in the UK and America. I assume in Germany) is you want a very tall gk over 6’-4”. That mentality leaves out Shilton 6’-1”, Schumacher 6’-1”, Kahn 6’-2”, Bruce Grobbelaar 6’-1”, etc. So, you have these very tall gk’s that can win crosses but can’t get to the ground fast. They compensate by using their feet. That’s why you see these spread-eagle foot saves all the time now. And,.. even know they’re so tall they still don’t dominate the six-yard box for crosses. Back in the 90s if I didn’t come for every cross that came into the six-yard box or made a conscious effort to save with my feet. I would have been thrown off the team, and now it’s just the way it is.
Also, modern 1v1 they do this one knee to the ground and hope the ball bounces off of them. In a 1v1 you should attack the ball not the space. In the Shilton 1v1 technique, the gk moves forward as fast as they can, closing the distance to the striker. But,…only when the striker has pushed the ball in front of himself and can’t shoot at that moment. When the ball is at his feet and he can shoot, the gk is on his toes ready to react to a shot. I all ways wondered if you put Shilton at his best in to the modern game how would he do? I assume brilliantly. What do you think?
@@stevedixon4787 Yes, that would be interesting, to see Shilton playing the modern game. I think he would be too intense for today's modern players, because they are such Beta Males and have their feelings easily hurt. Then again, maybe I am just speaking of players here in the USA. Today's caches here look more like babysitters than managers.
I agree about the leg technique, it seems to be a byproduct of the larger, longer GK nowadays, however, I just watched the 86 WCF yesterday and I painfully remember Shumacher giving up 2 of his goals flying out with that technique. Then again, I have never played against Argentinia's number 1's, so, who knows what he saw or was thinking. I think he just got a bit lazy and complacent. That's what happens when everyone ordains you as the "Best Goalkeeper in the World," in the matter of one week.
I saw the leg positioning a bit when I was playing in the Budwiser Pro League in Boca Raton, FL. It was largely used by younger guys in college who simply got tired of making saves with their face and would come out studs up strip the ball and punish the attacker. It was legal, well kinda, because the guys were creatively subtle about it, and referees felt like the GK was simply protecting himself, as long as it didn't look malicious. I used to train with an Olympic Development Team on my off days, only because a friend of mine was their coach. Both of his GKs used the technique. I said, "What the hell is that technique, no hands?" He shook his head at me and said, "I've tried, but these guys are both going to Div 1 schools on scholarships, so why bother?" Perhaps Shumacher, my idol, started it all?
And now here we are in 2021, where every team wants the next Manuel Neuer. It's all about "length" and "range" nowadays. If you're under 6 ft tall, nowadays, good luck. I was 5' 11" when I played with a 36 inch vertical jump, which allowed me to play "taller" than I was. I'd be lucky to be a practice squad player in today's game.

Shame about the saves he should have made, against Maradona in 86,and Poland in 73, both cost England dearly,he was,nt as good as Clemence,or Banks.It was a shame about that car accident in 1972 that ended Banks career,otherwise he would have made that save against Poland in 1973,and England would have gone to the 1974 World Cup.
