Why Isn't Wales Represented on the British Flag?

  • The Union Flag is the flag of the United Kingdom and represents the constituent nations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. However, the flags that went into making it, England's St George's Cross, Scotland's St Andrew's Cross, and Ireland's St Patrick's Cross leave Wales unrepresented. So why isn't there a Welsh element to the British flag?

@@shawnv123. I believe some people are more inclined to hear background sound than others. When I began teaching high school in the US, my supervising teacher couldn’t understand my distraction from noise in the classroom. I could hear the background noise as clearly as I could hear my students’ voices. I had to have my hearing checked because she believed that my hearing was faulty (at 22 yo.) Extensive, professional testing found that I have incredible acuity at all ranges, making my hearing far better than hers. I went on to become a high school teacher (in the classroom adjacent to hers) who had to learn to ignore extraneous noise. 😮
The music is an issue for me too. Maybe you have excellent hearing acuity too! 😊

I think the best way to do this (from purely a prettiness standpoint) would be to make the red on the bottom half of the Union Jack green, like the grass on the Welsh flag, but the grass isn’t exactly the centrepoint of the flag. The thing is, the dragon, while it’s nice, is quite a complicated design, and it would be hard to incorporate it into the simple geometric design of the Union Jack.

Hello Hilbert. To be in keeping with the design, the yellow St David's cross would be more appropriate, despite the dragon being a great flag for Wales. Otherwise, you could say the red dragon is already there, right in the middle, but camouflaged. You could also argue that St. Patrick was Welsh.
It was James VI of Scotland by the way.
Back when Wales was conquered, it was really by the Normans. They had brought Bretons with them, and they saw the conquest in 1066 as restoring their homeland. An Alan from Britanny was the ancestor of the Stewart kings. See Scotland History Tours for details. I suggested before that it would be great if you did a collaboration with Bruce from that channel? He is doing a stand up tour and he asked in comments if I would be going to his Newcastle performance for us English types, but I am sure a Geordie Frisian would be welcome.

As a Welshman, I always have and always will absolutely HATE the Union Jack. I simply cannot believe the British government has not changed the Jack so that we are represented on the flag. Moreover, the Irish part of the flag is defunct because the ROI is a sovereign state, and people in NI don’t recognise it as their flag either. Basically it’s a total shit show. Wales football fans regularly burn the Union Jack (as I have done). Essentially, the UJ has remained the same because the English don’t give a flying f*** about us!

Personally I like the flag with St David's cross incorporated because the dragon is too different from the crosses of the other flags to look comfortable. People who just recolour the blue of the Union Jack thinking they've replaced Scotland miss a key element - notice that the St Patrick's Cross is not symmetrical. This is because the thicker white diagonal fimbration is from the St Andrew's Cross to denote Scottish seniority in the Union over Ireland/Northern Ireland! To truly remove the St Andrew's Cross you'd need to make the St Patrick’s Cross symmetrical.
On a similar note, fancy doing one on the Northern Ireland flag?

@@Cyberbeagle1000 The "nationalists vs unionists" patter is a direct import by Scottish partitionists. The terms may have meaning in NI but certainly don't, historically, in Britain.
And, of course, what was created in 1707 was a new nation. You only have to read the opening para of the AoU to grasp that. Which is why it was called the United Kingdom of GB and not United Kingdoms.
Not only was a new nation created but the parties to the treaty - the parliaments of Scotland and England - were subsumed into a new entity - the parliament of Great Britain.
So, yes, people do talk about The Union but in doing so are showing their ignorance and lack of understanding of what actually happened in 1707. We're a unitary nation-state, not a union.
