Selling apparel man! Been doing it for the last 7 years! It has been pretty dope!! Never saw it coming! Also, photography is slowly becoming a new money maker as well! - Nemo, CEO of Foolies
First off wanted to give you a thank you for all the tips and insight. I was excited about this video because I'm newer in graphic design and aside from social media and behance I was wondering how to reach new clients. But to be honest after reading reviews on all it is a little discouraging. Just wondering how you went about to not fall on the negative side of people using these sites?
Great advice bruh. I'm working on transitioning out of my full time factory job to working in my niche as a graphic designer/illustrator. Been wasting my degree for years and I've finally gotten sick of it. Keep pushing people to get out there and start something!!!
Mr. Spiteful I can relate! I’ve been 10 years working as a waitresse, eventhough I have my graphic designer certificate 5 years ago almost I’ve waste my valuable time
100% agree - and btw, being broke is a PERFECT time to start your business, since you've got nothing to lose (e.g. your job, stable income etc). I even recorded some thoughts on the topic on my channel. Being broke is one of those situations when nothing holds you back, you need money desperately, and you get very creative to get them. Don't lose your chance, time's scarce )
I'm 44 in a job where I'm undervalued and I've wanted to freelance for a long time. This video serendipitously showed up in my timeline and I am so thankful. As someone who paid his own way thru college after quitting football 2 years in, if I could be doing anything it's freelance work. Thank you so much!
I did the same actually. I paid my way through college by freelancing as a Web Developer. This is great as well because you will be ahead of the game so that by the time you graduate you already have a portfolio. I got a project on freelancer for $100 then learned the client was actually a large client which I worked on projects for Disney and Nickelodeon. So through these sites like freelancer you can definitely get large projects.
Thanks Roberto. I am at a point where I so wish I can make the plunge from a J.O.B to just doing what I am passionate about. As my UA-cam ad sense doesnt cut the bill, I think I need to find something to do as a Freelancer to start feeling some money through my creativity. So thanks for posting this.
Create something awesome today! I take your word. I am going to post my 1st photography summer package today, and boost it. Hoping to get started with my special journey 😊🤞
It's like life is telling me all the opportunities are here. You've given me the final push, I'm going to try and freelance ☺️👍 I'm definitely going to try.
Can confirm freelancing is a game-changer! A couple of years ago I was managing at a restaurant full-time, had very little time for my creative endeavors, and even less financial freedom. When I found out about upwork, I literally put in my two weeks that day and started going hard on Upwork. The transition to freelancing was reasonably seamless and incredibly motivating - I dove into editing and YT channel management jobs, and was almost instantly living my creative dream (and getting my bills paid doing so). One year and about 100k cumulative subs later, I'm still 'Top Rated' on Upwork, and freelancing is still my go-to for maintaining a bit more financial stability than endeavors on my channel alone could support. Currently I'm focusing more on the business of growing my channel than I am freelancing, and a big part of that is that I want more independence from Upwork - it's not glamorous, but the ability build a business around the services I provide as a freelancer and outsource a bit of that workload would really be a huge boon. That said, I'll have to check out the books you mentioned in the video, but do you have any other suggestions for making that transition?
Fuad Saneen lol, yea... start up needs to happen. Looking into the 99 designs. I have always wanted to design logos. Writing maybe too. More editing then here though. No START up cost is mandatory as my life flipped upside down recently.
King Comps Yeah bro... I too have been interested in graphic design since I was 13 years old (lol!). But I had never understood how I can use my skills to make money and, I don't have money. By the way, Can you contact me?
"Team anybody but fiverr" UNDERSTOOD LOVE! Rant: Gosh Roberto, I've been following you for about 2 years now. You are a god-sent. Your honesty will always be appreciated. I shared this video with my family. We're all naturally creative and 9-5s hurt our soul, we just need that focus and guidance that you so graciously provide. I wasn't brave enough to Freelance. With you providing valid resources and sites that aren't scams I finally have the confidence to actually put myself out there and Freelance. You're awesome man. Thanks. "Be smart, be tactical, be ruthless!" #SithSquad 👏👏👏
I absolutely love your clear speaking voice and your ability to enunciate each and every word while keeping my attention at the same time! Great content...thank you.
Thanks Roberto. Big help. I'm a writer and voiceover and have been doing this stuff for a while. But this is a great boost and inspiration to take it higher.
I've never even thought of freelancing before. That could be the perfect way to pay for editors and other things while trying to self publish my first novel. I've come across a few your videos before and they're always quite helpful and informative. Thank you.
I wholeheartedly agree with you, Roberto. Freelancing is an incredible way to earn an income using the many skills that we possess. After many years as a visual effects artist at Industrial Light & Magic and LucasArts before that, and after a stint running the VFX Department at the Academy of Art University, I began freelancing and never looked back. Sometimes my clients are small companies, sometimes they are individuals, and sometimes they, are huge studios. It's all great. Not only is freelancing wonderful for all the reasons you so perfectly presented, it also makes life more interesting. You never know what sort of unique projects may come your way. By the way, I hear yah about Fiverr. It can serve a purpose when getting started, but there are so many better options. Thanks for this video, Roberto. And to everyone else who is reading this, LISTEN TO ROBERTO'S ADVICE ON THIS! It's the gospel truth!
AQUATASY -- didn't you kind of leave out one other little gig you had? ;) Seriously folks, check out this guy's UA-cam even if you are not into aquariums.
Freelancing was a total pain to get started in but 3 years after starting, I'm 100% office routine free. So grateful...(yes, I got started on Upwork and it was not easy. But it ended up working out)...
Dude this is awesome! I was actually having a hard time getting approved for upwork so im signing up and grinding at freelancer. Thanks for the other site suggestions
Thank you for the tips. In Brazil is so hard to be a freelancer but I think this is the best type of work for designers here, cause the fulltime jobs pay so much little.
Thank you for giving concrete, actionable advice on every single video. I mostly feel that society wants everyone to be in retail or customer service, and no one really knows how to be their own "bawse" (nice book in the background!), myself included. I had an extremely tough 2017 financially, and I decided I have too much talent and passion to make someone else rich. Your videos have been a GIGANTIC step in coming to that realization.
Yes, you are so right! I started doing freelance writing just over a year ago and it's changed everything for me! I am so proud of what I've accomplished, it is extremely fulfilling, and, of course, helps pay the bills. I've been so busy that I've spent a lot less time on my channel and youtube stuff, but am hoping to get back to is soon. Glad to see your channel exploding to almost 300K! You deserve it! Thanks for another great video
You’re right! This is definitely something I needed to hear without evening knowing it! Even though you talked mostly about graphic design, video editing, etc. my skill in music still applies. If I just take the next month to improve on my skills I think I can definitely make some freelancing income that can help me out a lot. I have a lot of loan debt & bills to pay coming out of college, and I’ve been struggling. Two jobs right trying to make it a day at a time, paycheck by paycheck. I’ll definitely take some time to look into the resources you listed and keep how I can improve. THANK YOU AGAIN!
Hello Roberto, Thank you for this video. I have just started a youtube channel and have seen others of your videos and find the information you share insightful and presented in a very educational way. Freelancing is never something I really thought about as an income, others I have seen on the TUBE seem to treat is lightly. You on the other hand come across as caring and informative. Again, thank you for your time and contributions for helping and informing myself along with many other. Keep it up.
I love the idea of freelancing, but it's so intimidating! The competition is intense, and I'm not an aggressive businessman. Also, I don't know if my skills are even up to par. Roberto, you got me pumped to sign up with upwork.com, but my hand trembles when I hover the mouse over the "sign up" button!
im new to this channel, i love how u give soo much insight in such a short amount of time. its true what they say 10+mins can go a long way. the info u give goes 1000 miles.

The whole reason I don't have a 'real job' is because of my illness and my illness is the same thing making freelance difficult. I'm still trying though!
Very informative video, and I love how you shed light to obtaining realistic goals/gigs as a side hustle while working a day job to make ends meet! Love that you have Gary and Lilly’/ book right behind you, those two, including you, are the ultimate hustlers here on UA-cam!!
You really do have a talent for delivering extremely informative content, but with an inspirational and relatable twist. Without even forcing that spin onto it, it naturally develops due to your genuine demeanor. I’ve always respected you as a creator; very good job, as usual :)
This is me. I'm a teacher and I have lots of ideas, but not the know-how or setup or desire for making UA-cam videos. I've found myself helping my sister with her UA-cam channel instead, which is already well established. So, instead of trying to build a channel of my own from the ground, I'm able to help her make her videos and her business even better, learning about managing a UA-cam channel as I go, from videos like Roberto's. It's not super lucrative yet, but I see so much room for potential, and I really love working with my sister!
#QOTD: I've been selling design resources on Creative Market for a couple of years now, and it's brought in a significant amount of side income. It took little to no time to get started since my first products were assets I had already created for myself (i.e. texture packs). Then I decided to create t-shirt mockups for my own design work. Figured other designers might find them useful as well, and started selling those too. Those have been organically selling surprisingly well. So my tip for selling digital products is start small, experiment, only sell what you yourself would use, and be patient!
i like that you mentioned resources are better than money. cause i think thats what i get more often. but the pay still good (but it could be better) very inspirational!
Hi Roberto, thanks for sharing your creative ideas with everyone. I've been following your channel for the past few months and just recently subscribed. Your videos have really motivated me to start creating more in my life. Keep up the AWESOME work!
That was an EXCELLENT video Roberto. Our college aged daughter just started with Upwork this week. Freelancing has never been easier with the internet and sites like the ones you mentioned. Thanks for sharing this great information. :)

Yup
Yup. And working for someone is another kind of pain minus freedom etc. I think freelancing is the way to go! 😁
What makes you say that? @Treggify
