What doth dice roll so softly sweet; The glisten and sheen of yon paladin's armor or Arcane wizardry within the pages of a sorcerer's tome. Much ado about a rogue and his resin stained hands and The betwixt nature of a barbarous knave holding his foes in slight regard. Of carnal knowledge of trees among the taper eared folk or a dwarf lord's lust for blackened stout, sitting in a hall among all that glitters. Take heed all you merry gentlemen and noble ladies who explore a land of imagined lore; the Dice are a hateful friend, a loving enemy; followed with utmost piety from whence they fall and where they lie.
Well that was fun! Who wants Chinese!

It's refreshing to see someone encouraging character flaws.
All I get from Google on the subject of DnD are optimization guides, and forum posts giving advice on how to make the most perfect, immune, and invincible character.
I'd like to hear stories of how people gave crippling flaws to their character and how it allowed them to create an epic moment.

It was because of D&D that I loved Shakespeare in school. I would image that is how characters in a D&D Setting would talk. Shakespeare was the one class where I could pretend to be in a D&D game.
In class, I always found it funny when my fellow students would groan and complain about Shakespeare's writing and say "why can't he talk straight?"

I started incorporating Homeric similes into my narration.
Its a music themed adventure where an entire volcanic moon is one huge pipe organ and the PC's need to fix it before it explodes.
    Some stuff:
A guitarist, master of his instrument, has his fingers move on their own to reach a melody, so to did [CHARACTER]'s feet step to reach [ENEMY].
    AND
As fingers strum and pluck strings to create wonderful sounds so to did [CHARACTER]'s [WEAPON] slash and pierce [ENEMY] to create a cacophony of death.

Great vid! I had a roommate in college that was a Shakespearean actor (he's now doing fight choreography on, and off, Broadway). Anyway, we watched a lot of Kenneth Branaugh Shakespeare adaptations. I have to say I learned a lot from him in general. But, when making NPCs I've taken a lot from what I learned to try to generate three-dimensional characters that the PCs will interact with. I am discovering that my players seem to enjoy finding out things about the NPCs that have no real impact on the current story but inform the PC's attitudes, beliefs, and personality.
More broadly speaking, if I were to give any DM some advice, I would tell them to become a movie buff. You can learn a lot about how to be cinematic in your story-telling and provide interesting characters to interact with.

I like what you had to say about over-crafting; it can be a factor. I once thought there'd be a terrain solution to just about everything...and...there isn't! But it's okay. Terrain jazzes up the game but it need not always be a diorama. I think we all associate terrain and minis as the best overall way to visualize and resolve combat/encounters. It's also fun to use at other times so the players may think there'll be a combat encounter. One example of this is when the party is trundling down the road in their trusty wagon. I lay out simple terrain and it sort of 'scrolls' by without actually moving along with a mini of their wagon and all of the character's minis. The idea is to mostly get a wagon out on a road and make it visual. The players will do the rest. It can make players think a bit more. At other times, it's just cool to use...the tavern, the city gate, or other scene that is either more functional with terrain or has an iconic look. Outside of that and a few other instances, game-on with theater of the mind! Using terrain for everything is just another thing that can slow the game down.

If the characters are only fighting a single monster I find theater of the mind is fine. It's when they're fighting several enemies that I use miniatures and terrain. If you have any pro tips for using UDT for those encounters I think that would be a great focus for a future video. Thanks for all of your great work!

In my current campaign that I am a player in I was given a choice to take a mediocre 15-13 stats or 16-7 stats. I took the latter and put the low stats into my int and Wis. In our last session our ranger went down, two death fails in, and I had a healing potion in my hand. When combat ended my dm counted down from 10. My character didn't understand, the ranger rolled and failed his third death save. He was a good friend. He tried to teach my half orc rogue how to write (don't understand vowels). I will miss him.

I am really curious as to how UDT works. You have multiple rings that determine range, but what if the monster moves into those rings? Also, what about fighting multiple enemies? Also do you even use the grid on the board? It seems like you just place the minis wherever. Also, since your board is round with concentric rings wouldn't it make better sense to use hexes?

    • @allenyates3469
      @allenyates3469 3 роки тому

The bulk of combatants that can reach each other will be in the center. There's a second ring around that too show the outskirts of the fight. You can fire from range but also the monsters can move into that circle. The outer circle is people aware of the combat but not able to interact. The squares are just to look nice. You can move from one zone to an adjacent zone each turn
