Want to find grants to fund your graduate program?!
Hello Everyone! I talk a lot about funding on this channel because getting into grad school and not having any financial support and no financial aid made my transition into my graduate program hard in ALL aspects of my life. I had no idea how people funded their grad programs and how students pursuing a doctoral degree found grants or scholarships. I felt so left behind, confused, but even more importantly I was scared that I wouldn’t be able to afford my PhD degree!! Luckily, I found some strategies to help my look and eventually get money for grad school! So today, I am sharing how I look for grants and scholarships for my graduate degree and I am discussing my 5 best strategies to Find Funding for Graduate Students. While it’s not an exact science, there are definitely ways to find money to help you afford graduate school! Hopefully this video can serve as a beginners guide to finding graduate funding ESPECIALLY if you want to depend on fellowships, grants, and scholarships instead of taking out student loans.

Also a great tip, work for the government! I work as a civilian for the Department of Defense part time. About 20 hours a week. They have helped pay for my graduate school. Between them, financial aid, grants, and scholarships, I haven't paid anything out of pocket to go to a state university graduate program.

Hi!! Soo all grad students can fill out FASFA regardless of school or circumstances. They can also choose not to. But the Fasfa doesn't actually give money for grad students but rather measure/define their financial need. This is the information the government uses for loan eligibility and SOME not many but some grants and fellowships may also use this info. But in grad school it's mostly for loan access
So I'm not familiar with the criminal justice field... but these strategies I used might be helpful to get you closer to your goals!!

I totally agree! Not only is this a good UA-cam channel for my students and daughter who wants to go back to college for a second degree, but I can use it too. I had to take a medical leave from my PhD program, but I am ready to jump back in as I only have two years left to finish.

The University I attend is 8 miles from a second major University. I have found a lot of good resources at both schools. In fact, I located my housing via help from the neighboring school! Sometimes you have to be very creative when searching for grants and funding!

I did my undergrad outside the States because I an offer I couldn’t resist (it was free) but now I wanna go back for Grad school and I’m sooo lost in the matter of how I’m going to pay.
It's definitely a time that can be stressful but it's great that you are starting so early to think about how you will fund it!! As long as you plan ahead you totally can make it happen!! Please let me know if you have any questions!!

Love this... usually they're only for USA citizens.. would love a video for international students 😭
I totally feel that!!! I know from my international friends that many.. if not most... grants exclude international students. But i do think these strategies still apply you just gotta... internationalize them... so when i say talk to ppl, for international students it is even more important to talk to their international peers and offices to find support.
Also obviously Google lol but again the searches would have to include more specific key words to international student.
it's not totally impossible to get grants as am international student... but i would be misleading if i said it is as easy as it is for US citizens bcuz that's just not true.

In reading about the search and application process, I gathered that this is how I should start. After making a list of schools with the program of interest and professors whose labs I'd like to work in I figured the next step was emailing them to see if they knew whether or not they would have a vacancy for a student and funding. If they don't have a vacancy, obviously the search ends, and if they don't have funding then I guess I thought to myself "If they or the department don't have an award then I'll continue my search elsewhere."
Is it still worth applying if the professor or department doesn't offer funding? I haven't searched for grants or scholarships since it's another component of the entire process and I feel like my head spins trying to keep track of all the schools before even adding grants.

Hi! That is such A GOOD question mostly because... i dont know. For me i didnt know to ask about funding for my masters until it was too late and when i got there i ended up taking out loans to pay for everything. So to me it was worth it because ultimately i wanted to get a PhD and I thought that getting a masters would help me. (Which isnt necessary for everyone.)
I think if a department/faculty dont have funding you probably could also ask a follow up "how do most students handle the finacial burden" or "how to most students in the program pay for it" these questions might give you insight to decide if it would be worth it for you or not.
Also again, i didnt really know any of this until it was too late lol and over time especially in my phd i did figure out how to get funding.
I do understand it is a lot! And i think its great to know your capacity so you dont overwork yourself! For me i do wish i applied to grants b4 applying, but i also didnt really know how to. So its not uncommon. I wish i had a better answer for you, but that's really all i know.

I am switching fields and was accepted to two MA programs in art history. However, since I don't have a long track record in the field yet, I cannot compete with undergrads who might have already even published before entering into grad school. I've looked into various scholarship databases but its a bit of the same problem. One program I was accepted to has already awarded funding offers for the semester and the other has put me on a scholarship list with no guarantee that I'll receive anything. I don't know what I should do.
Hi! Congrats on the offers!!! I think I'm general most art history undergrads go into their masters with published papers. Every university and department has their own criteria that they use for giving out scholarships but in art history publishing is very rare at the undergraduate level. Regardless all scholarships are going to be pretty competitive. If I were in your position I would talk to the chair of the department and ask what they look for in a comprove candidate to fund or even ask straight out how you could be more competitive. The other option is when you are looking for external grants you can get creative. It doesn't have to JUST be art history scholarships. Depending what your topic there may be more variety of grants that you can apply to that aren't necessarily art history.
I would also teach out to a couple current grads for advice.
If funding is a real struggle you may also consider trying to be a RA or ask about teaching positions (though they aren't very common for masters students it's not impossible!)

I feel like I've applied to so many applications on the web/fellowships throughout the years with no results that it's a complete loss for me. Has anyone here genuinely gotten scholarships?
Hi! I totally understand how frustrating it can be. It really depends on the size and type of scholarships/grants you are applying to. For larger more competitive applications like the Ford Foundation or Fulbright, I know quite a few people that have applied and gotten awarded. For more obscure grants/scholarships you find online it may be harder to find winners or to know if they are legit.
I do know from the people I know the best advice they give is to apply more than once. Grant applications are always a sort of a lottery. While it is based on merit, who is considered "the best candidate" changes year to year based on who is a major donor, who is on the review committee, what the news/current events are of your country and more! While I wish I could say ONLY the best make it, the reality is luck is also a major component. With that said... if you reapply you are increasing your chances, and if you do a little research before applying you may be able to find a previous winner and get a little help or ask for advice and/or guidance which can help improve your applications. I know being rejected never feels good, so I am sorry that you have had to deal with it so much lately. But I am sure you will win one!

I am a Doctoral Candidate completing a online degree. I am not interested in grants or fellowships. Where can I find scholarships?
Hi! So for grad students in the US scholarships are the same thing as grants and fellowships. The terminology just changes but grants and many fellowships work in the same way as scholarships:)
