    Now I understand why a bag of quality chunks seems so expensive. It’s a very labour intensive operation.

    Wow, who wood have known there was so much to know about wood, I’m on the website now ordering…….. excellent video with fantastic info. I have a wood fired oven, combustion stove and 2 fire pits so I appreciate the amount of work that goes into sourcing good firewood, but that’s a completely different level 👍

    i have 2 very large old oak trees and one old pecan tree in my front yard. every time i have a strong wind or storm i end up with many dead branches of all sizes in my yard. i collect them into a pile and use that to grill with. works great and keeps my yard clean. and to think for years i just tossed those branches away. and to be honest it works better and gets my grill hotter than charcoal briquets, also seems to be a cleaner fire. happy grilling to all !

    Thanks for the great content. Can you tell us the difference between using chunks of timber to generate smoke & using wood dust in a cold smoke tray thingo? Could you just use the tray to get prolonged even smoke generation? Thanks.

    • @LownSlowBasics
      @LownSlowBasics  3 роки тому +1

      You certainly could, I can't say I've ever used a smoke tube/tray. If you are smoking in a gas BBQ then it's a great option, in my opinion it would be hard to beat true wood smoke.

    Have you tried pecan vs hickory..... they are from the same family?. 👍👍

    • @russ72948
      @russ72948 3 роки тому

      They are related. But the biggest difference would come from the location it grows in. My research tell me that that makes a significant difference. Even in the states, hickory grown in one area VS another is different. The example locally is the ironbark. The ironbark in qld is different, it's harder VS the stuff in south aus. Likely because of the sub soil profile. Clay holds water and nutrient and the tree grows quicker. Less water and nutrients means the tree grows slower. Often meaning closer growth rings and denser wood. When your looking for fuel to run an offset for example, denser is better = longer burn time.
      Same reason why Gidgee makes good charcoal. It's very dense.. Good carbon availability and why pine would make crap charcoal.

    Hi Hugh here, Jill's other half. I left what I thought was a really supportive and positive message yesterday about the Russ video and how I had supported him by buying some woods from him after viewing the video but I cannot find it now. Was it taken down, if so why, there was absolutely noting offensive in it, only encouragement?

    What if it rains? Is the seasoning process delayed?

    • @russ72948
      @russ72948 3 роки тому +2

      Yes it does. If you think about it like this.... We are trying to remove the moisture from the wood over time...if the wood is soaked in water then that really doesn't happen or slows down.
      The wind plays a big part in seasoning. We have plenty of that here which is good!
