Terrific album by a terrific and underrated band. Vocals by the late David Byron.

I was about ten years old, when I first heard this song (1971). Will always be one of my favourite songs. I was told, this song was very appreciated by many prisoners in the early seventies.

I remember being at Letchworth College and buying this great LP as soon as it was released. I still love music from that late '60's early 70's period.

Ken Hensley’s lyrics were so much more nuanced than the “We’re gonna Rock ya all night” stuff that was the stock in trade of most ‘Heavy’ bands.
If only Heep hadn’t been worked to death for short-term gain by their management, they really could have been up there with Zep, Purple and Sabbath. Some of their stuff already is. Salisbury is an incredibly varied, powerful Rock album. Unsung Classic! 👍

Another one of my favorites from this album.
Like I said before, I really hope you'll listen to "High Priestess", which opened the US version of the album, and you've been following the UK version order / songs.

Another meant to but never got around to it, band. Reminds me of Trapeze. Glad I can finally hear what I’ve been missing. Enjoyed it, banger.

Small point, but try saying, "Saul".
    Saul's.
    Saul's b..ry.
If you know what a "Schwa" is, it's something like Saul. Saul's. Saul's bri
If you don't know what it is, it's nothing too fancy. A symbol that looks exactly like an upside down e. (Which is exactly how it's written/ typed. Grab an "e" from the box of letters, and install it upside down in the line it's in.)
And the meaning? Even simpler. It's the sound you make when saying "a". Or the "e" in the. Or the "A" in "Another".
The omit it in Czech spellings, so you end up with words like "skvrtk".
Always fun to know you're going to enjoy this one, and then be proven right by you enjoying it. You must have very good taste, because you like Uriah Heep.
It would be interesting if somewhere in this "series" you included Simon the Bullet Freak, which seems to replace Bird of Prey on the US release. (Why???) I don't recall ever hearing it, so will wait to see if I can hear it here for the first time, for the time being.
    OK let's try Gloucestershire.
"Gl-Ow Sester Shire"? Nyet nyet. Glosta sh (or Gloster-sheeya, I've also heard. The spelling got left behind by history.) You'd be allowed to call it Gloster shr, I think.

@@Owlstretchingtime78 Personally, I think there's some classic Heep tunes on their first album. Obviously "Gypsy", but also "Walking In Your Shadow", "Wake Up (Set Your Sights)" and the beautiful and sad "Come Away Melinda". And the rest of the album is quite listenable, too.
Of course, this is all just my opinion.

@Drummingvulture Fair enough mate, but there's something about their sound that grates with me. Horses for courses i suppose!

I agree with hatsbo1. I lived in a small market. Not a whole lot of Uriah Heep. I do remember these songs which hatsbo1 mentions: 'Easy Living, Sweet Lorraine, Stealin' ' because they are more pop sounding.

  • @hatsbo1

Great head banger, this early version of the band had top notch players manning all the instruments. They were a nice hybrid of prog and rock, with Ken Hensley adding the neo classical flavor. This song would receive some airplay on the album oriented rock stations{AOR}, which dotted the country at the time, more so in larger markets. They did make a splash in top forty airplay with Easy Living, Sweet Lorraine, Stealin' and July Morning.

Sadly the radio and critics were always kinda allergic to Uriah Heep. Too depressing, theatrical, or whatever. Ken hensley's songwriting is something to be admired - personally I consider the song Salisbury to be a bit of a dud in that respect - and during his ten year tenure in the band he made some real magic. It's never the most complex or technically impressive, but incredibly effective and emotionally gripping. David byron really shines on this track as well, the way he makes the falsetto shrieks sound is kinda without par. The first 6 albums are dynamite in a box imo, and tbh they rarely fall off too far after that, but youz really owe it to yourself to explore a bit more after this album. Look At Yourself at least is well worth your time.

There's nothing left to give. Of this, I'm fairly sure. There's only "Time To Live" till the opening of my prison door. Peace & Love.

It's a song that can stand for itself but the great thing on this album is the contrast to "The Park" just before.
