I can see their evolutions being like: Vertle --> Turamboo (Tur for Turbulence or Turtle, amboo for the Bamboo) --> Kamenai (Kame being Japanese for Turtle and nai for Shinnai, which is a Bamboo sword) Boomoo --> Nucow (Nuc from Nuclear Bomb, and Cow from, well, cow) --> Bulliferno (Bull and Inferno) Meribee --> Aquabuzz (Aqua for water and Buzz) --> Waspoon (Wasp and Harpoon)
@@BJGpixel I drew it! It's far from professional, but I'm still proud of it. I decided to make it a motorcycle instead of a van. I'm telling myself that it's because of the whole motorcycle thing in Scarlet/Violet, but it's really just because this was easier. It's the newest video on my channel, assuming it doesn't get deleted (I had a little bit of trouble uploading it)
@@N_IRL Oh nice, that was quick! And yeah a motorcycle is a good call too; very fitting with the recent showcases from Scarlet/Violet! Thanks for sharing :D
@@BJGpixel No problem, it was lots of fun to draw! I'm glad I can show off some of my pixel art to you since you're the source of most of my pixel art knowledge that I didn't gain through observation alone
A fun bit of trivia for the first design: As you were scrolling through the randomizer, the anchor bee was the first one that caught my attention because it immediately made me think of Seabees. Seabees (Derived from CB for Construction Battalion) are a faction of the US Navy that serve as combat engineers, constructing and making operational all of the hundreds of military island ports and airstrips that would pop up throughout WWII and onward, and responsible for appropriating and refitting whatever machinery gets picked up along the way. Often among the first to land in order to make bases suitable for the incoming deployment. Thought it made for a cool hypothetical Pokémon inspiration.
Fakemon from a random emoji combo? This is such a great idea, since it - it can easily be turned into a drawing practice (that takes away the overhead of thinking what to draw) - leaves room for the choice of style and complexity - creates results that can be used as base for novel character design, _and_ - can provide results that can be combined yet again (like Plague of Gripes' TriFusions')
If you recontextualized the lanterns on Maribee to bouys, you could call it Bouee! And you could also alternatively call Vertle Tenboo, referencing it's stick as a tanbo staff/bamboo/to tend or guard. Then you'd have Boomoo, Bouee, and Tenboo
boomoo is my favorite easily! as soon as i saw the "cow heart bomb" emoji while scrolling through the emoji randomizer i knew you could get something awesome out of it. looks like it would fit home RIGHT with the other gen 2 pokemon. you could have told me this was apart of the gold silver leaks and i would have believed you. awesome work
hey brandon, would you ever consider doing some sort of series of a large-scale pixel art project? i feel like itd be so cool to watch you design a city on a huge canvas or something
I was thinking maybe Boomoo can use it's tail as a fuse for the bomb at the end. Like one attack would be to spin and throw the bomb towards the enemy by detaching the tail. I'd love to see those characters animated and (as someone else already requester) see their evolutions. Also I found it really funny that you're using the turtle shell of Vertle as a backpack. I have been designing a turtle / cat fusion character the other day and stumbled across the exact same thought.
Totally! A bomb throw would be great, maybe even lighting the fuse with the flames coming from the horns. And that's interesting about the backpack thing, kinda stumbled into it during this design but it's a neat idea - would love to see the turtle/cat design :D
One of the things about the 40x40 pixel style is that giving a Pokemon CGI-level details means you'll need to take more space in the 40x40 square. A Pokemon that's supposed to be smaller isn't going to look good standing next a Pokemon that's larger. It'll seem too big or too small, unless the larger one is crouching or squished.
40x40 was an approximation for the small starter-type Pokémon only (e.g., Charmander). Medium size (e.g., Charmeleon) would be ~48x48, and Large size (e.g., Charizard) would be ~56x56. For this GameBoy style, the relative scaling between them is a bit of an abstraction anyway to ensure they all fit reasonably well within the restricted screen space while balancing readability.
@@BJGpixel Ah. Alright Even the larger pokemon sprites tend to be crouching to emphasize how much bigger and badder they are than their pre-evolutions.
@@gaidencastro9706 Haha yeah true, that totally emphasizes their scale too - they have to crouch just to fit on screen; kinda like squeezing into frame when someone's taking a group photo 😅
Seeing as you have an extra 9 emoji combos left to work with id definitely be interested to see this as a mini series! great work! The designs are super cute, if i had to pick, maribee is my favourite !
great video as always and I love this idea a lot, i'm using the emoji generator to come up with new creature ideas and objects for my game and its working extremely well.
I need more of these Pokémon. I'd like to suggest taking these sprites that represent the Gen 1-2 era and trying to recreate them in the style of another Pokémon era, like the sprites from Generation 3. You could even split them into 3 videos, going over Gens 3, 4, and 5.
WOW BRANDON! Please make a series out of these videos! Totally agree with the other comment that you captured the GBA style perfectly. I would literally assume these were real if they were presented as a concept art leak.
Super effective indeed, it's amazing where you find inspirations for creativity! 😁 And using a random emoji combination with Pokemon in particular is such a great call, considering the breadth of all the Pokemon out there ✨ I could see a version of this challenge with filters like food emojis to create dishes (I was thinking art while writing this but actually prepping it would be quite something!) 🍜🧀🥥
Thanks so much! Yeah the randomizer is an interesting way to find some unique traits - it's unlikely I'd've stumbled into these sort of designs through my own concepting alone ✨ Hahaha and yeah that'd be an interesting challenge for art/food as well - maybe both! - first as an art piece and then as a real dish! 🫐🌮🔥
Hey man, just wanted to thank you for getting me into doing pixel art, without you I wouldn't be where I am today, you are a huge inspiration for me and I love watching your videos, keep up the good work :)
Maybe you could make a part two or even come up with an idea for your own region. All I'm saying is that this idea has a lot of potential and I think it is really cool.
Very cool. I'm partial to Maribee. How did you get the colour emoji? The link is all black and white ones. I'm guessing I need to check them on my phone as a lot are missing...
One feedback I have is that Vertle only really subtly calls back to the crosswalk emoji in a sense that it's a kid that probably crosses streets to go to school by design. That is totally fine but given the bamboo emoji refers a japanese festival it would not be uncommon to directly incorporate that tradition in the pokemon design. There are a ton of Pokemon that do that symbolism already, even in Gen 1. (Magikarp, the Legendary Birds, Ninetails come to mind) So yeah, that and the Anchor and specifically the lanterns don't quite come through on the Maribee sprite, which could be due to Sprite limitations.
I kind of avoided this video because I'm a bit tired of "let's design some fakemon!" but this is youtube gold! I never thought the emojis could create such great prompts (in Brandon's hands at least)
I see this trio as like the three starter pokemon for your own reigion. I'd like to see a follow-up video either going deeper into their concept by evolving them or making more pokemon based on other emoji combos 🐒🧶🔌
Especially in the outlines, how do you decide when to use a specific color from your pallette? The stinger especially has so many different outline colors that look like they change at random! But it also looks.. right?
This is fantastic! You should definitely do a follow-up video later on where you design their evolutions.
this
That would be sick, I can already imagine when the turtle evolves it could become more of a guiding figure than a kid on their way to school
@@LegoSauce You mean like a school pilot? I like the idea!

I personally would consider renaming Maribee to include Apiary, a man made hive
And how lanterns look like bee hives
I had the idea of "Taurbomba" for the final evolution of Boomoo. A play on Tsar Bomba + Taur. A little straight forward but found it fitting.
You managed to capture the GB style so well
