I often think that an artist starting today has an advantage over when I started by just recording their process and progress and posting videos online. They have a record of progress and they can look back any time they wish, even if they are not a popular channel they still have the record! I have sold or given away most of my art works. I do not even have a record of work that I did in my commercial settings, the clients have those if I had made a video of the process to share I would have an accessible record of more of my art journey! I believe that you will look back on your videos as a good thing, I believe you are helping your viewers and your self. Thank you Peter. Please take care of yourself and be safe!

You know. I had forgotten about that fact. It reminds me of when I turned 30-ONE.
I went to that ice cream chain shop that advertises the 31 flavors they have. I was very excited to sample each and every flavor. I thought it would be a thing.
It was NOT a thing. It was very embarrassing because the 16 year old ice cream clerk was not impressed. She was not even happy. She didn't even wish me a happy birthday. I think I will stop wishing people a happy birthday. Because of that one year I turned 31.
I don't remember my 30th birthday. I think it was traumatic. But now it isn't because I don't remember it. So now I can pretend it was a happy birthday. And actually that makes me happy. Ish.

"If I just get good enough at drawing, maybe it will save me from all those other things" Peter, this has been my life, but with basketball. I've played so much because I wanted to get away from *those things*. I got "good" at it by running from things that were more important at the time. Maybe I hated taking responsibility for my life, maybe not. Basketball only got me distracted, even though I truly loved it at some point. I was compensating. Anyway, I only play casually now. It's nothing like it was before for me, and I feel like I've killed my own passion. I REALLY don't want drawing to become the same thing.
I want to stop this cycle. I'm only 23, and I consider you much more experienced with life, and I don't just mean in terms of years.
I also balance out by doing something I love and enjoy, even if it's just to get into a different head space/distract myself. I tell myself that I can do this ONE THING and become great at it, even though I KNOW there is more to life. I love drawing but it doesn't stop me thinking about all the things I don't want to do.

I realized something has I was watching my over hundredth peter draws video, and you brung up the fact that you use this as a journal. And then dug deep into your emotions and it is beautiful. It’s something you’ve done before several times and I think it helps me out with stuff I’m going through. It made me realize, especially as this drawing cane to life. This channel is something spectacular. Because I and many others believe that you are one of the greatest artists in the world. It makes me think, what I’d say Vincent Van Gogh, instead of having journals was able to do something like this. I honestly think this UA-cam channel will go down in history. People in the future realizing how amazing of an artist you were and hopefully still are will get to go back and watch you draw and genuinely discuss your life and I think it’s just something so amazing. Thank you Peter.

Yes, you are correct: you have identified all (or most) of the puzzle pieces. By that alone, you are ahead of most people in your age bracket.
    - Physical health
    - Mental/emotional health
    - Financial health
So much flows from those three foundations, so you are indeed very smart to recognize and focus on them.
Introspection is a lost art -- or unexplored territory-- for most people. It is good that you engage in it as a way to "check in" with yourself. Be careful not to stay "inside your head" for so long that you set up house there, though. The longer you're there, the longer you delay taking action and then you default to a "safe place," which is drawing. That would be disastrous for you and your art.
Good for you for taking action. Seeing a licensed counselor or therapist will help you identify what is holding you back. Sounds like you have a good one that you trust and will help you. Please make that appointment.
If you want or need more complications in your life and distractions from your personal goals, then by all means pursue a serious romantic relationship. Surely you can carry that person's baggage as well as your own, right? Right??? Wrong. Being 30, or 32, or 35 or older and single as you work to gain solid footing on your goals is where most people need to be.
Stay laser focused on identifying and reaching your goals.
    The rest will come.
And the dishes will get done.

Peter...you're wonderful! I get it though. I am old. Old enough to be your grandma and I recently retired. Believe me, we all had your worries when younger. But you just hang in there. It all works out in the end. There is someone out there for you and your life is an inspiration, even when you don't think so. My granddaughter turned me onto you several years ago and I haven't missed one video since. Your channel is the first one I subscribed to. Your kindness and gentleness, and of course your drawings, have been soothing for me so many times, and I am a therapist. Well, a retired one now! I worked with families in violence crisis and whenever I had a rotten day, you were a wonderful escape! Thank you, Peter, for all you do.

Happy early birthday Peter, things will work out, I'm 31 and it was scary jumping into the 30s with so many things going wrong in my life, like, I was quit literally homeless, but things do get better. My life is out of balance too, and I'm trying to fix it as well, and art can help you to figure it out a bit, along with a therapist. I talk on the phone with my therapist, I kinda prefer it cause I get weird and fidgety and self conscious. Also, I put on weight cause being stuck inside due to covid-19, many of us have, don't worry about weight, it takes you to not great places, just trust me on that. I'm glad your shoulder's ok, though I'm sorry medic stuff is so flipping expensive. Also, you seem like a pretty awesome dude and will find someone when you least expect it.✌Stay chill my dude!🌜 I love the drawing,. All your drawings transform into a million different things as you draw them, it's like performance art and traditional art combined.

Hi Peter, love your videos! As a fountain pen enthusiast I just wanted to say: feedback is the amount of resistance the nib gives. The one end of the scale is an effortlessly smooth nib and on the other end is scatchyness. Broad and Gold nibs usually have less feedback than EF and titanium nibs. Also, keep yourself sane, I know that it is difficult. I wish you the very best.

  • @TweakMDS

I really enjoyed this video, it's very calming and soothing to hear you talk, even if the subject is rather heavy.
I would recommend looking for a coach rather than only a therapist. They are two completely different approaches that don't exclude eachother, but especially with the feeling of "having all the answers", but somehow still not doing something about it, I think coaching might be a good fit for you to try.
Maybe look for an ICF certification (I can vouch for those, since I am one).

@@jeanblythe1595 I am curious as well. I would have thought Life Coaches would have LC in there somewhere? I have worked on actual puzzles with pieces, and one time I needed to fill a spot with a bit of red. I found every loose piece with any red at all. Tried EVERY single one in EVERY possible way and nothing fit. I wondered if I lost one. I walked away from it and one day some days or weeks later I was in the shower and the answer hit me out of the blue. I knew exactly which piece fit. Apparently, unbeknownst to me, my brain had been working on it the entire time on some back burner in a kitchen I didn't even know I had. I got out of the shower, went straight over to the puzzle, picked up that ONE piece and it fit perfectly in that spot.
Some things just take time, I guess. I do want to look into the Mind Map thing. Regular to do lists don't work for me. If I try to write down stuff in the order I need to do it, there are always a bunch of middle steps and sub parts that crop up.

Peter, the only reason I follow you is because you create your own art, and what I mean by that is, you experiment, A LOT. You love drawing, and you're aware of how you've had "phases" in your journey. You didn't just learn new techniques, but different mindsets of drawing which is way more advanced imo.
I've only been drawing for a year, and I found your channel somewhere in the middle of that time. I love how you approach in an intuitive way, instead of this heavy-analytical way that most people teach nowadays.
It takes a different type of person to understand art intuitively, and even though I do in a way, you're like a "pure bred" artist to me. I tend to overthink everything I learn about drawing. There's times when I study more than actually draw, and only recently I've been able to get away from that.
Thank you peter for being an inspiration, and just a good human being. I'm not in a good place mentally as of late, but hearing from you means a lot to me. Stay safe man.

yeah, i can relate to the way youre feeling. I did a little video literally today, maybe it will help. but the nr 1 advice that i can personally give you is to address those problems... that is as a fact, the only way to truly get rid of these. buy a book about finances, im reading rich dad poor dad, it opened my eyes on the way to think about money so far. maybe its a starting point for you for that problem. forget about the girl thing for now. sure i feel similarly, quite heartbroken personally, but now is not the time for that. Do what you can right now! keep the drawing, but instead of rest, do something to fix those problems, even for just 15min. slowly but surely!

I read that book years ago thinking it would help. After finishing it, it seemed like it was one big commercial to buy MORE books, board games and seminars. I actually did go to some local meeting where they were doing some kind of sales pitch. I might have made a deposit and then changed my mind to get my money back. I'm not really a salesperson type.
funny thing, while I was reading it, my husband saw the book laying on the dining room table, and asked me "Is this Book about ME"?? What?? Not EVERYTHING is about you. I asked him if he was aware that someone was writing a book about him because the question seemed so absurd. But he tried to make everything about him.

When I was 29 I was getting divorced... age is meaningless in the context of success. I talk to my therapist a few times a month over the phone and it's not silly, it helps so much. Age or even "success" isn't a metric to measure your ability to find the balance. I think you and I are similar in that we overthink everything because we are very self aware and...well, we have the time! Being self employed is ridiculously difficult. Be kind to yourself.

Wonderful piece. And thank you for the frank and courageous self-analysis. I felt like you were speaking to me in a way because my life has been out of whack for the past several years and I've been falling back on maladaptive coping mechanisms and making the same excuses not to teleconference with a therapist. Your words were helpful, so thank you.

$2000 for an MRI!? To me it would have been $0. I can't imagine the stress of having to worry about the cost of doctor appointments and surgery! As if being ill isn't enough stress.

Honestly, all of your vids are so relaxing and lowkey asmr and I just love that! I quite enjoy watching people talk about pens and pencils and drawing especially with relaxing voices without background music. And your video is all of these at once! That‘s probably why I‘m always so happy when you upload a new video. Your work is great and I‘m glad I found your channel! Have a great day Peter! :)

The opening music had soul, so that’s good enough for me. I loved that anodised titanium pen that was loaned to you so I think pens can have a little soul floating around in there wondering about their inky partners and paper blankets.

I love this drawing a lot, one of my all time favourite Peter drawings 😍
Love that you talk openly about therapy. I think it's so helpful for so many people and many who don't get it would benefit from it. I think we all struggle to find balance. It sounds like you know what you need to work on, you just need to persist at shifting your habits, it takes time and effort. I think you're taking the right approach with your shoulders too.

wow you really described the whole compensating with art perfectly. i feel like im listening to my own inner thoughts right now it’s crazy. instead of studying for cal 2 i was drawing a mandala today. (and my head was kind of tired afterwards from making the lines perfect too!) instead of facing my problems and loneliness i draw. more often than not i draw when i’m sad rather than when i’m feeling okay. it truly does feel like i have to compensate with art sometimes. thank you for sharing

WOW and the therapist part is literally the exact same situation and feelings towards the online part too. you are speaking to my soul rn.. seriously i should make the move to talk to my therapist again instead of relying on myself to solve my problems because “i’m smart”.

Maybe whenever you think about something you don't like, do a little something about it right away, like if you think your apartment is messy clean a table, and then the next time you think about it clean the dishes or something. I wish you the best and your art is so sick!

I also have problems with my joints and I couldn't figure it out and doctors were like well whatever, but then I started seeing a chiropractor and its helped so so much. Its crazy how much they help and how they aren't referred to by other doctors. I can guarantee seeing a chiropractor for a few months will be exponentially cheaper than an MRI and surgery. Paired with physical therapy, everything should work out.

I picked up a Muji aluminium almost entirely from you saying it's your favorite, but here's my reasoning for that: It's my first fountain, and after having watched your channel for a while and finding my interest in fountain pens and whatnot, I wanted a nice first pen to start with. I figure if it's your favorite or at least one of them, out of the seemingly hundreds of pens you have or have tried, it must be a pretty damn good pen. So I felt pretty confident in picking up a muji.
I actually just got it in the mail today, and I can say after just a few hours with it, it's my favorite too. Blows all the ball point pens I own out of the water (granted they're all cheap ones but still)

The problems you talk about in this video speak to me on a personal level. You basically described my mental life. Especially when you said how you think getting better at drawing will save you from problems that it really will not. And it let me think if I was using drawing as a refuge....
Idk. I’m not good at expressing myself.... just wanna share my thoughts.

I share your opinion, I won't ever own a pen in that priceclass unless someone gave me one. Which in this case I would like, a nice functional design ( to anyone contemplating gifting a complete stranger an expensive pen for no good reason, I do prefer brass). Still then I would own a pen I would be very scared to lose or break or someting...

Hey Peter I don't know if you'll see this but like, while all your stuff is really great, I think this drawing was particularly beautiful. I think it's my favorite you ever did, that I've seen anyway. I especially like the inscription at the bottom, the ribbons of piano like tentacles coming from the forests of music notes read to me like a representation of the art you're using to try and compensate with. Idk it might just be coincidence, but either way it's a gorgeous piece. Thank you!

  • @GKOALA7

Drawing as an escape or expression is extremely healthy. You probably don't think so at the time, but your subconscious is being freed up and allowed to explore the oddities within itself. It's when you stop drawing that you feel trapped and suffocated. Don't ever feel that you are compensating for something else by drawing. No, no, nuh-nuh-no, no, no, no. In fact, you have to give yourself permission to use this skill, this talent and slowly marry it with the other things that you find you're supposed to be accomplishing in life now. I think that most of what is bothering you now might be stemming some from this cabin fever that we all are experiencing (along with the whole turning 30 thing). Try taking a sketchbook with you and draw in your car... At the park, at the beach, or just in a parking lot. (Please wear a mask.) I'm an artist too so I feel you.
Oh, and this is your channel. If you want to use it as free therapy, please, do so. Or if it seems weird to you, you could do it on Peter Peter Peter. Mental health is more important than you might think. Don't ignore it.
    Stay healthy and stay safe.

I love your videos! You draw beautifully, your voice is so soothing, and the things you say always get to me.
I hope you get better with your shoulder, and I agree that perhaps it's better to start with the less invasive treatment.
And also, mental health is really hard to balance. I've been to therapy for some years now. Anxiety, depression, pretty common stuff. But it's so hard to feel okay with myself. I always feel time moves on and I get left behind, that I'm not good enough to find a partner or a job, that it's not the best moment to start living yet... It's all just one great fallacy of my mind, but a very difficult one to destroy. In the meantime I have my studies, friends, hobbies... At least I have that going, which is nice.
Sorry for the long text, I just wanted to say that we all are complex beings with complex lives, narratives, minds... Perhaps there are times with no clear objectives, but we hang on there, we are living and we should try and enjoy ourselves in the meantime.
Cheers, have a good time, man. You inspire me ♥️
