Good video! I’ve had my pond and 5 koi for 8 years and settled on 24 grams a day. I believe it’s true you feed what your filters can handle, but algae can throw a huge wrench in the readings.
Oh my that the down side of having your pond under your window you can use any cleaning products to clean ya window incase it gets in the pond 🙁 but on the other hand gives ya a great view 😉 keep up the good work 👍
Good update bez, the beer filter is only for polishing not to be used when the water is full of debris, and certainly not left for more than 24 hours. Hope this helps buddy 👍
Hi matey, couple of points, new media can take a few months to populate so need to give it time. Secondly regarding the beer filter, what it’s catching is stopping it from returning to your pond. Could be you have your flow rate too high and eazypod not catching it. If your worried about it overflowing then just remove while your away or remove the top do it sits loose in the return pipe. I’ve had one for 2yrs and never had any blockage issues.
Yeah mate, to be honest I didn’t notice much of a difference in the water with it in! Just not worth the risk in my case as I know I’ll forget about it again 😂
Decent waffle there Bezza , cant understand why your filters arnt maturing properly to be fair , maybe try backing the pump of a little to give more contact time in the bio . Other than than that , great update ar kid 👍👍
Yeah so if you watch koi talk last blog they cover this issue Bezz it's amazing Ricky's nitrate is of the scale it's not going to hert the koi you need to raise it to grow the nitrate consuming bio otherwise it will take a long time but yes watch the koi talk most recent one amazing mate ponds looking good best regards Tony
Your probably looking around 8 weeks for the csm to mature but when it does it will be bullet proof. With you feeding 30grams a day it will take all of 8 weeks. Now the temps are up I would be inclined to up that feed to double that. The bacteria will only colonise to the amount your feeding, the more nitrite the more the bacteria has to catch up and grow and more you can feed. Nitrite is a bugger to cycle and takes ages for the bacteria to establish. What readings you getting on the nitrite? You also need to get the retro drain sorted as the poo in the pond is not getting into your filters and it lingers in the pond causing bacterial problems and starving oxygen. Best thing I ever done to my pond is a drain.
Hi mate, sorry I thought I’d replied! Ok so nothing has changed, the cycle goes from a large water change with zero nitrites! Feed approximately 30 grams a day, I then test every two days and slowly it creeps over! So this week it’s taken a week, of feeding 3 times a day! Tested this evening and on the dropper test it’s the third one down, not blue but the second purple colour! So again I think that’s too high and I’m just doing a 25% water change to get it down! It’s been like this for ages! How do I let it go over by upping the feed! The koi were lethargic tonight in this heat, they’re very hungry but when I’m not watching they all facing the wall just hovering! This made me do the test for nitrites, it’s clearly affecting them! Plus my PH is slowly dropping and was at 7.0 so I need to up this slightly! I’m just lost with it and think the only things is to wait for filters to mature 🤷♂️🤦
@@bezzaskoichannel3856 No problem. So would you say your nitrites are 0.5? You want to bring the ph up with bicarb as nitrite can be more dangerous with low ph. Your a carp angler like myself - I do mostly in france, put that test kit away and watch your fish. Your fish will tell you when they are hungry, watch them feed and look to see how much there eating. If they are spitting it out stop feeding. Your cycle will happen its got to hit high numbers before levels will begin to drop. Clean the easy pod twice a week to get rid of mechanical waste and top up what you are using. Please get your retro drain in, its not doing you any favours. If the waste is not getting into your filters it wont cycle properly.
@@bezzaskoichannel3856 I would worry to much about them facing the wall, mine do that sometimes as long as they are eating and no clamped fins. You know yourself from carp fishing, the carp rest up when water temps are high and bright sunshine. The higher the water temps the less oxygen the water can hold for the fish. Also they are on low feed so they will conserve there energy.
@@craigwaring6742 yeah this all makes sense, it’s just knowing how much I can go over with the nitrites! So double the feed and don’t test the water at all? I have upped the PH now, ideally I’d like it at about 8-8.5 as I’ve not got any ammonia trace to high PH will be fine and it’ll help the nitrites! The fish are absolutely fine, eating and behaving as they should to be fair! I’m reading too much into the tests clearly! The bottom drain is coming on pay day! I scoop most of the waste out with a net so yeah a lot doesn’t go into the filter! Cheers for the advice, I’ll keep you posted 🙏🏻
@@bezzaskoichannel3856 Bi carb has a natural ph of 8.4 so it should only raise it to that once added. I don't use it as I have a ph of 8.2 but everyone that has soft water out the tap has to.
I’d stop worrying about your readings and pop a little more food in to put more ammonia in to feed and colonies your bacteria watch some of Ricky stoddarts videos on koi wholesale

Hi mate, I wish I could stop worrying but an extra feed a day and the test tube will be purple! I don’t see anywhere that says you can leave it like this until your bacteria catch up! I get what you’re saying I need to feed the bacteria but shouldn’t it be done slowly over a period of weeks, just upping the food gram by gram per day? Cheers 🙏🏻
@@bezzaskoichannel3856 yeah ammonia is really dangerous and you said that is okay even if you up your feed, according to Ricky his ponds are full of nitrate and nitrite
@@jameshudson2587 no ammonia at all! Hmmm I’ll have to have a look, I can’t remember him ever advocating you can keep high nitrites! The only reason I can think of he’s gone over slightly is if the pond is salted which mine isn’t! It doesn’t feel right to over feed and let the levels go high! I’d have to start heavy water changes and stop feeding which seems counter productive 🤷♂️. I appreciate your comments though and it’s certainly good for thought 🙏🏻
Nice update enjoyed watching. :)
Cheers pal 🙏🏻

Hi, thanks for your comments. Yeah defo feed what the filter can handle but I’m pretty sure mine can handle much more when the bacteria grow 🙏🏻

Yeah it’s nice having it under the window! To be fair I only used water to wash it down and even then try not to let it in the pond 👌🏻

Yeah I’ve learnt mate 🤦😂. Won’t happen again, never

Hi mate, are we talking nitrite off the scale or nitrate? I’ve never checked for nitrate in my pond, it’s the nitrite that’s a pain
