@Large Chicken Assimilated means to become included into the culture; in this case. She makes viola jokes; she does Ling Ling exercises, she participates in violin based games..
@Large Chicken Say a Syrian comes to USA and after some time, he abandons his traditional life and values, speaks English etc. You cannot tell him apart from an American. He is an American. He has assimilated.
me having food with my hero: "how are you? could you offer me insight into your life and maybe grace me with some wisdom that i will treasure for the rest of my days on earth?" eddy: "would you rather shit yourself or.."
I find it awesome that Brett and Eddy are so likeable and open and sincere that they attract all types of professionals in their business like Hilary Hahn, Ray Chen, Olaf Grawert and so on and even do silly things together like their challenges or these interviews where asking a world class violinist what she'd choose: pooping pants or sightread in a concert. They are incredible and I am definitely their fan! On a side note, why doesn't Hilary look like she's 40 (and a mother of two at that) at all? I mean, all I see is a very sweet 27-year-old incredibly talented musician. What is up with that?!
Maybe she got lucky with her genes as pointed out before. A big part of how you age depends on your genes. The other important things is lifestyle and the environment around you. I don't know her personally so I can just assume. Sleeping well, drinking a lot of water, taking care of your skin, exercising helps a lot and I think she does it. But I think the main part is her passion for music. The position she is in right now and the way she plays shows she has immense passion for the violin and music. That in reduces stress in daily life as you love what you do which makes you look young. Also I think she had to stay indoors for long periods of time in her youth so that she can practice. Reduced exposure to the sun also helps.
In korean news articles they say, ice princess came from how beautiful you are and how you miss no notes and play perfectly. We see more of the pure, clear side of ice not the coldness. Ice also was only for king and queens in the summer. So nothing bad!!😊
Me: *first sees Twoset has uploaded* Me: Ayy. another 10 minute video with Hilary Hahn! Me: *opens video* Me: *sees its 90 minutes long* Me: *insert pikachu meme*
16:30 Fun fact: The legend of the brown M&Ms started in the 1980s when rock band Van Halen would use it as a test to see if the promoter had actually read the contract. As they were touring with enormous, heavy lighting rigs that had to be set up safely and properly, they needed to ensure instructions were being followed down to the smallest detail, so they included a clause "M&M's (WARNING: ABSOLUTELY NO BROWN ONES)." If they arrived at the venue and saw brown M&M's in the bowl, it was cause for a thorough safety check.
@@TwinGirlsZhan as far as I understand. They actually don't care, but said that they /don't/ want them. If the organizers missed that detail, chances are high they missed something in regards to something much more important.
"Well, there's only two straws" IT INFURIATES ME BECAUSE THE STRAW IS RIGHT THERE!!! They can't see it because of the green beans. Frickin' green beans.
just to clarify so Hilary can stop worrying, in Korean culture, "Ice Princess" isn't used in a negative way. People very commonly use such titles for idols and other celebrity status people, usually performers to describe someone who is very poised and has a regal vibe, almost aristocratic air about them if you will. It's supposed to be a great compliment since they're saying that you exude charisma and project a mature, confident and serious image of yourself.
antisocial does not mean asocial, it means that you are harmful to other people and ignore their rights on a frequent basis. antisocial personality disorder is another name for psychopathy
I just love how honest and open the three of them are during this interview. This is just something that could not be accomplished with a talk show host. They are all so skilled and knowledgeable in their crafts that they bounce off and feed off each other so well. Truly beautiful and inspiring. Thank you 😊
Sometimes I wonder how Brett didn't like totally disintegrate from the chile he had to eat as punishment when this unspicy food is already killing him...
FYI, typically in Korean culture being called a princess is actually a compliment. For example, a similar pet name was also given to Kim Yuna, Korea’s pride in the Olympic Ice Skating. It’s a term of endearment used to depict someone who is chic, commands charisma and strength, and professionalism in their field. So, contextually I’d say, Hillary wouldn’t have to worry about what they’re saying about her heh. Cheers!
Yes exactly this comment needs to be seen by her. Hilary Hahn was the first violinist I've ever heard of and the only world class violinist that my violin teacher knows!
Can we just appreciate how they pumped themselves with coffee and cola so that they can do 3 shows in a row for us when they had only planned to do one? Such love and dedication!
Ice princess is not negative at all in the Korean context. It's been used several times for other female celebrities as well. It's more like a title for certain people who give out a certain vibe, specifically someone who they feel like is very poised, regal, flawless amongst other things, but definitely not something negative.
you can say poised and regal if you wanna be positive or stuck up if you wanna be negative but it still represents the same idea. ice generally represents cold and distant, no matter what country you're in. she's not seeing herself like that which is why she's trying to change that. that's the impression I got from her words
@@Ysmir. I kind of agree with you, but I have to say that it is truly different in some East Asian cultures- especially Korea, China, and Japan. The concept of an "ice queen/king" being associated with composure, confidence, poise, regality, etc. is an almost unequivocally positive and desirable trait in those cultures. Dignity and discipline are traditionally considered some of the most admirable attributes. That being said, more libertarian Western culture may interpret those same traits negatively as coldness or aloofness, and that is valid- but that is almost certainly not the case in Asia. When they call her "the ice princess", it's quite certainly a compliment.
@@its_clean but that's what I've been talking about. They might not mean it in a bad way but she can still feel somewhat offended by it. Explaining what they meant might not change it because if she's aiming for passion, emotion in her interpretations, then being perceived as regal and poised might be viewed by her as failure
@@Ysmir. I see what you mean and that's totally fair. If that's not the image she was trying to project, or if she feels that it doesn't reflect her true character, then I wouldn't blame her at all for wanting to change that perception. It's obvious from her open and down-to-earth personality here that she isn't actually an "icy" person. It's interesting how she described her character changing when she performs, becoming more intense and focused. I follow some well-known dancers and they've said similar things. Some of them are super cheerful and goofy in person, but in performances they shift into a different mode and appear totally fierce and intimidating.
Reading some of these comments reminds me that there’s still an “elitism” surrounding violin or classical music. How some describe Hillary Hahn as this beautiful goddess and degrade TwoSet because “these jokes” don’t “deserve to be next to Hillary Hahn” really just convicts and proves my rhetoric that this elitism surrounding classical music is disgusting. Or in general, never put someone in such a high pedestal that you degrade others. Anyways I found them as friends having a nice dinner and conversing. It was nice :)
Hilary Hahn When people say "she is a prodigy" Hilary: *"I was actually just a musician who was young"* Humble Queen. . . . P.S I agree with here. People always keeps or even when you have talent. (I do art) and people tells you you are talented and they wished they could draw like you when I always say you can just try and practice it out. It doesn't come out until you started doing it.
I do art too and agree. You can't deny that there are people who are just better than you at a young af age. I had a friend same age as me who had more stable hand and didn't need to erase a lot to get a good drawing, like she could just get the right shapes on the first try. We made comics together from 7-10 and she was always correcting my human anatomy/angles. In the end I'd tell her what I want my character to do, and she'd draw it out because I'd mess up the pages with all my erasing and smudges >_> BUT I see people on art subreddits being like "1 year ago vs now!" and PRACTICE REALLY DOES WONDERS because they're able to draw so well within a year. And you know damn well those people are going to start having people ask them how they draw so well. "PRACTICE!!"
This is a huge point and I’m glad you brought it up. This is why I love twoset. They really put in the work and they’re pulling back the curtains on what it takes to produce their art. Thank you for adding your perspective on making visual art. It frustrates me to think of people who don’t do art or make music who see something simple (or seemingly simple) and say “I could have done that” or “anyone could have made that”. Yeah, but you didn’t. That’s the difference.
@@fenestrapain Exactly -- part of the point is that it's supposed to seem effortless, but the keyword is "seem". There is a TON of effort that goes into visual and performing arts that people don't see, and so people who don't create or perform have a distorted view of how much time and practice it really takes to be good, or even just competent.
I've been bingeing a whole lot of TwoSet content since i stumbled onto them maybe...two-three weeks ago? and so this was a really nice change of pace where not only were they picking Hilary's brain and how she thinks about things, but she really returned with questions of her own that would provoke deeper thinking and more thoughtful answers from the boys...which really helped get a look into their minds as well... often these sorts of long vids can be one-sided (because of the "fame" or "talent" disparity, i suppose), but this was just a real conversation between friends and colleagues..
@@stephaniecurry45 Don't forget she has three Grammys. I doubt Beyonce could get one strictly for playing an instrument or singing. In the pop category it is all about "pop"ularity.
I don't even play violin, but some of Hilary Hahn's responses just broke my brain in a good way. It's fascinating to get some honest insight (as opposed to some TEDTalk or motivational BS) from someone really accomplished in their field.
So I am not the only one fatigued by "motivational BS". So much of it is designed to give the impression that you can achieve more while working less, which is nonsensical.
Hands down, hands up, best interview I've ever watched. A very open conversation with an "unattainable person/position" that's never been done like this. You two are going to refresh the classical world into the modern age. Hilary ......you were amazing. As always. Genuine and down to earth. Inspiring and uplifting. The three of you are breaking down walls in a uptight world.
I discovered TwoSet relatively recently, but it's kind of amazing to me that classical music is getting this exposure on youtube. Ten years ago when I was in high school the only kind of content we had were uploaded albums and live recordings.
i was wondering why eddy was floundering for nearly 6 minutes with nothing but rice on his plate then he announced he didn't know how to use a fork lol and it all made sense
When I went to your concert in Chicago, like Eddy said, I didn't really have an expectation of what you would be doing. I knew a couple of things that would probably happen, but I was very happy with the mix of playing vs. comedy vs. slapstick vs. serious. It was like a perfect balance. And if I had to pick a single word to describe your show, it would be "charming". When the concert ended, we were left with a wonderful sensation that lasted a couple of days. It's like when you come out of a really good movie and you're smiling and you feel lighter than how you felt when you went into the movie.
I tried to learn violin after hearing Heifitz playing the Tchikovski and Mendelsohn concertos - after 6 months I realized I would never come close to sounding like him, and I switched to clarinet and eventually singing
If u asked me two months ago if I planned to watch 1h30 of musicians talking, I would laugh. Like, I don't even play any instruments or am musically instructed... What am I even doing here and why do I love it so freaking much?
Knowing that Hilary teaches classes makes it so clear as to how she explains everything in this video and how she guides the conversations and makes them think and open up.
I'm sure all the TwoSet fans are very happy that you didn't stopped when everyone was saying that you should. Now you have a wonderful community. I'm from Romania, i'm not even a violinist, but I like soooo much to watch your videos. You guys are passionate, funny and the fact that you are at the same time serious and goofy it's amazing. I learned a lot of things about classical music, about music theory and it's all because of you. I'm happy that i've seen this conversation where you are very honest about your work, this showed me one more time that you are worthy of our time. Thank you.
Oh nooooo when she said Koreans call her "Ice Princess" I thought "oh my god, they LOVE her," but I'm sad she thought it was a bad thing! I hope she's seen the comments here that explain it :(
@gJb 1 Do not care about that part. Weird just depends on where you look it from. Normal is whatever is common to you, and limited to what is that you know. Everything that you are ignorant of will be likely weird to you. I wanted to know if Ice means love/liking/agreeing... and why would Ice mean love in Korea. What is it that constitutes its relationship with its metaphorical meaning?
Maybe swiper swiped it! Lol 🤣 they missed an opportunity to look into the camera and say, "do YOU see the straw?" Followed by silent staring. "Point to the straw if you see it"

Why did I think you meant like a meatball hero
And then Hilary proceeds to show her integrity by telling us she'd rather shit herself than give an unprepared performance... what an absolute queen
Georgiana Nae it’s the power of practicing 40 hours a day
I guess she got very lucky with genes! Even when she was younger she looked younger than her actual age.
She’s a mother?’
i didn't even realise she was 40 and a mother of two until you said it LOL

16:30 Fun fact: The legend of the brown M&Ms started in the 1980s when rock band Van Halen would use it as a test to see if the promoter had actually read the contract. As they were touring with enormous, heavy lighting rigs that had to be set up safely and properly, they needed to ensure instructions were being followed down to the smallest detail, so they included a clause "M&M's (WARNING: ABSOLUTELY NO BROWN ONES)." If they arrived at the venue and saw brown M&M's in the bowl, it was cause for a thorough safety check.

just to clarify so Hilary can stop worrying, in Korean culture, "Ice Princess" isn't used in a negative way. People very commonly use such titles for idols and other celebrity status people, usually performers to describe someone who is very poised and has a regal vibe, almost aristocratic air about them if you will. It's supposed to be a great compliment since they're saying that you exude charisma and project a mature, confident and serious image of yourself.
Yes it is an honorific like Queen Yuna
I hope they see this!! ❤️
I was just watching that portion of the video and looked down at the comments for a possible explanation. Thanks so much for offering one! 👍

Hillary is so incredibly nice, generous and genuine. And those qualities are so clear in the way she plays. I absolutely love her!
Cheers!
Yeah that's right. Korean people really love Hilary. I have never seen any people who doesn't like her violin. She is just awesome.
Everybody up vote this so Hillary can see that Koreans love her

Ice princess is not negative at all in the Korean context. It's been used several times for other female celebrities as well. It's more like a title for certain people who give out a certain vibe, specifically someone who they feel like is very poised, regal, flawless amongst other things, but definitely not something negative.
you can say poised and regal if you wanna be positive or stuck up if you wanna be negative but it still represents the same idea. ice generally represents cold and distant, no matter what country you're in. she's not seeing herself like that which is why she's trying to change that. that's the impression I got from her words
@@Ysmir. It's the Asian love for metaphors :)))
Totally agree with you 👏👏👏
Luckily, not all classical music lovers are like that...

P.S I agree with here. People always keeps or even when you have talent. (I do art) and people tells you you are talented and they wished they could draw like you when I always say you can just try and practice it out. It doesn't come out until you started doing it.
A very very big point.
You can never be good at anything without commiting to it.
In the end I'd tell her what I want my character to do, and she'd draw it out because I'd mess up the pages with all my erasing and smudges >_>
BUT I see people on art subreddits being like "1 year ago vs now!" and PRACTICE REALLY DOES WONDERS because they're able to draw so well within a year. And you know damn well those people are going to start having people ask them how they draw so well. "PRACTICE!!"
Thats why 2set always says practice
even tho the 40 hours is a joke the real meaning is that great musicians dont have talent, they just practice.

This was one of the most down-to-earth and honest conversations (I wouldn't call it interview) I've ever listened to. Honestly, you should do that with other musicians as well.
