@@Wasserkaktus this and also I just watched a documentary about them on Hulu! Apparently this performance was kinda like a last chance for her to prove that she could have her shit together on stage. @@Wasserkaktus Her boyfriend is the one directing the video, he can be heard in the intro calling for lights and stuff. It was on popup video on VH1 years and years ago, she said she was feeling emotional about things in life. Please don't lie next time.
2:44 is where the lead singer sees Angus show up to the video shoot. You can see it in her eyes. MAPS means My Angus (her boyfriend at the time) Please Stay. She thought he left without saying goodbye (to pursue his own career). He showed up late and it was capture during the shoot. The mix of raw emotions is amazing. I was in a similar situation. Needing her support one last time and thinking she bailed on me, and she showed up at the most critical time. Still remember that moment before she got on that plane and left my life for good.

Yes, being young and duped into thinking you love someone so profoundly nobody else has those same kinds of feelings (Well, not "Special" LOL like theirs!!) You'll learn a lot, and you'll see it as "Well I learned it the hard way, or if lucky I learned it the easy way!!"
@@alexanderplatz517 I misspoke, you're correct. multiple decades lol I was a teen when this came out. Every time I hear this my heart feels a type of way.
the power “wait, they don’t love you like i love you” holds is magnificent. she never needs to explain the meaning which, i think, is why the lyrics are so incredibly simple. is it romantic? of course. could it be platonic? definitely. does it describe the loss of love? yep. and yet it simply means a type of love so great one cannot put into words. i love the ambiguity and the deep understanding we all have for experiencing that “no one loves you like i do” kind of feeling. a timeless song with an iconic and recognizable chorus… ugh i forget how much i love this song.
“no one loves you like i do” can be two sided. It can be said out of ignorance and selfishness but also can be the truth. You never really know until you actually know the person in question and actually understand it as a person. Romantic etc?! Not really. It's a case and point ''you told me something and I listened to it and ends right there'' that is it. Can't relate nor care to relate. Each to their own. On a related note it's just like going to a psichiatrist 99% it's equal to being alone and talking to a wall, the only difference talking to a wall is free ... vent and move on, nobody cares even the ones who say they do they actually don't. Every person deals with their own s--t.

I have to tell you, I am 47 and feel the same. Last night I went to see Amyl and the Sniffers (great band) in concert and while the venue was filling with people this song came on and I saw DOZENS of people in their 20s and 30s loving it so much too.

She is so charismatic and her voice is so powerful. The whole band is outstanding. I remember seeing them perform at Bonnaroo in 2009. I felt like Karen took the time to look into every single persons eyes. When it came my turn, it was a good 5 seconds, and I felt my soul leave my body.
She definitely has the “it” factor. I saw them as part of an alt music festival in San Diego when they were barely known. Karen took to the stage with a raw energy that pumped everyone up. Even the roadies packed the side of the stage to watch the set.
Used to listen to this song while I was working night crew, when it actually came out and was on the radio. This and AudioSlave like a stone...such a great time for music

That is the magic in music, so that you never forget the moments in your life worth remembering. It might be a difficult time, but those are the times we learn and grow from.

I remember when my high school sweetheart let me listen to her recording of herself singing this. I was in her room at like 2 a.m. because I snuck in her window. It must've been 2002 or 2003. I can't explain it but I still remember it exactly 22 years later. Once I heard her recording something happened in my mind and I knew right then and there that I really loved her. We still talk and check in with eachother but we both went out separate ways and we both have our own families. Memories are so bittersweet.
Yup, her bf was moving away (reason for the song being written) and he was supposed to show up for the music video shoot but was late. Powerful stuff man Also fun fact: MAPS = My Angus Please Stay
This video made me fall in love with the yeah yeah yeahs and Karen O. So many memories in one song and video. What I’d give to go back and visit, if even for a moment.
I was in college 2003 sleeping in my dorm w/ MTV on when I woke in the middle of the night exactly when this song started. I just laid there mesmerized from beginning to end. The song changed how I feel. This song and Karen are treasures.
Yes u and me both....as a dancer this became one of top songs for practicing on my living room pole and when the club was slow and I was on stage I made the dj play it. Worked everytime on the business men and guys looking for something deep within themselves on that day.
The raw emotion in this song and video is outstanding this whole band is amazing and they did perfect with the video keeping it fresh off the situation still amazing
My uncle and I used to play this song religiously back when I was a kid. I remember on the weekends our little family would all be playing together… hasn’t been the same since you left uncle … miss ya man… rip
I would play this on rock band for my children and husband. It was one of our favorite songs to play and sing to on rock band. When my third oldest son Amir wanted to move away this song made me think of him. Two weeks ago he was found dead at the age of 19 and now this song makes me feel like he can still hear me playing it for him. I'm sorry to be so heavy on you just trying to enjoy this song. I want my son back.
This is too sad😢😭 Please do not feel sorry for grieving! You always welcome here to share your sorrows❤ I am so sorry for you and your son and what you guys have gone through.. May he rest peacefully❤🕊
Simple powerful and real. Those are real tears. Her boyfriend at the time and her "true love"'s name was Angus (MAPS= my Angus please stay.) Angus was supposed to show up for this video shoot as he was leaving a few days later & this was the last time he would see her. He showed up in the middle of the shoot and Karen O started crying instantly as she saw him come in but never broke stride or "character." The director kept the shot as it captured the moment of the song and it's meaning in an ironic twist of events. That's why a simple video of a 3 piece band on a stage in a local school cafeteria is so powerful and so very real. And yes, he's in the video
Mike Huff well I’m today years old. I’ve liked this song back then but never understood what it meant. I knew it couldn’t really be about a paper that gives directions lol I like bits of info like that, thanks for sharing that.

Somehow I have never listened to this band, never heard a single song, but this song is the backbone of a decade-end article that revolves around being in yr early 20s in New York City in the early 2000s, which caused me to feel a really strong mix of emotions. I almost can't handle.

The second time it cuts to the crowd… it just looks so perfect. Some are into the song, others are mouthing the words, and yet people in the background are still working-even after they were told not to. It was/is so representative of culture, how when someone is showing you emotion through a performance, the mixed bag of reactions are always gonna be there.
Heard this when it came out, too young to have dealt with breakups, not having felt pain. Heard this again this morning understanding all of her emotions. This is epic
@@valinperal Did you get dropped on your head as a kid? You're drawing conclusions where there are none. Maps is a desperate plea from her for a lover to not leave her. The song was written for an ex. But you would imply that Karen is a spokesperson for paedophilia? Get lost
i have so many feelings about this song. years ago, i was in a psych ward for attempted suicide. I met a woman there who was also there for the same thing. we bonded over the same feelings we felt. before i left, she gave me a letter. it was pretty letter with rainbow lines on it. i still have it. we hugged and cried and said goodbye. after we both got out, we kept in touch. she introduced me to this song, and i'll always associate it with her. meagan, i'll never forget you. thank you for being a friend to me during a difficult time in my life. i hope you're doing well now.

I will never forget waking up before school every morning, running to the tv and turning on VH1 and MTV and they played this music video and many other great ones. Rip to actual music on mtv.
To be honest, it's been years since I made a lasting, meaningful connection with another human, but I still remember what it's like. And when I feel like I'm forgetting, I come here, just to feel something. This one never fails to move me.
Take it easy brother. There's good people out there who can appreciate and respect you for who you are. You'll meet them, eventually, if you keep going out there. And don't be too hard on yourself. :)
Gotta love Karen O's emotion in this video, I always remember this being played on MTV2 back in the day and once the video started I always had to finish it. Powerful tune
There is something so arresting about this song. Vibes, lyrics, the sick ass drum beat, the minimalist guitar that rocks, but sparingly. The emotion in the vocalists face and body, her super duper wet look hair do. I don't know what it is. But I will wait, won't stray. Their kind is my kind.
This song makes me remember playing it on Rockband on the Playstation 2 or 3 with my 8 year old daughter. She died in 2009. This song and when we were young by the killers hit me hard in my heart every time I hear them because of those fond memories.
Just read your comment. The lyricist is so sorry for your loss and is dealing with your pain. There is nothing that can repair that. Nothing but prayers...
Where were you when you realized she was really crying? I hadn’t paid attention the first hundred times I watched this song and always wondered why she was so stiff and gave such a weird performance. It was years later when I was watching the video again that I realized - that tear is real. She’s fighting so hard to stay professional and this raw stunning version pours forth from her. Every movement she’s making is to keep it together and get through this performance - and that’s the version that her audience feels every time. It cuts us to our core and we love it and her so much for it.
I just watched the documentary Meet Me In The Bathroom. That was when I saw her cry. It all made sense. They shot this a few weeks after a bad accident in Australia where she fell off the stage and a monitor fell on her head, and that wasn't even the worst thing happening at the time. Fkn legend.

@@Wasserkaktus this and also I just watched a documentary about them on Hulu! Apparently this performance was kinda like a last chance for her to prove that she could have her shit together on stage. Really sad as she was going through an extremely bad substance abuse disorder and feeling very degraded bc she was a symbol of women in the scene who were victims of sexual violence and victim blamed for it bc "well youre dressed like a goth whore, so you asking for it"
But it’s incredibly pretentious in its delivery, it it not?

2:44 is where the lead singer sees Angus show up to the video shoot. You can see it in her eyes. MAPS means My Angus (her boyfriend at the time) Please Stay. She thought he left without saying goodbye (to pursue his own career). He showed up late and it was capture during the shoot. The mix of raw emotions is amazing. I was in a similar situation. Needing her support one last time and thinking she bailed on me, and she showed up at the most critical time. Still remember that moment before she got on that plane and left my life for good.

Why is this the most special and emotional video I've seen in my life 🥹😭
the power “wait, they don’t love you like i love you” holds is magnificent. she never needs to explain the meaning which, i think, is why the lyrics are so incredibly simple. is it romantic? of course. could it be platonic? definitely. does it describe the loss of love? yep. and yet it simply means a type of love so great one cannot put into words. i love the ambiguity and the deep understanding we all have for experiencing that “no one loves you like i do” kind of feeling. a timeless song with an iconic and recognizable chorus… ugh i forget how much i love this song.
Go look up one of the definitions for maps as an acronym and it will make more sense.
It’s not romantic he never showed up
“no one loves you like i do” can be two sided.
@@BenFoilHat Could you elaborate since MAP can mean minor attracted person ie paedo- which would kinda ruin this song and i hope MAPS refers to something else... ANyone?

Epitome of 2000s indie rock. Should drive you to tears if you have a heartbeat
Takes me back to the days watching VH1 while I got ready for school. It’s like time traveling.

Fkn legend.
I seen it in her eyes the first time I seen this video a few hrs ago.
Once I realized this song was about Paedophilia.
