- Devil's Den is one of the most famous sites on the Gettysburg Battlefield - but have you actually visited the "Den?" ACHS Historian Tim Smith, who literally wrote the book on Devil's Den, offers his take on the legendary rock formation.
I have heard Tim talk in numerous videos and never get tired of the way he pronounces devil's den.
DEV-ils DEN!!!
How else would it be pronounced?
@@mcmulcat 1:13 the way he says it here. He says it this way in a couple other videos. No there is no other way to pronounce it to be technical.
I honestly think I know who you are after seeing your channel and I’m not even fkng joking… 😅
OSU is tied w Michigan right now. 3rd quarter.
(At Michigan)
Tim, awesome informative program. Excellent!
My ggg grandfather and his brother fought in the same unit and company for the state of Alabama. My ggg grandfather was killed a Suffolk Va, and a short time later his brother’s face was horribly disfigured at devil’s den. After returning home his wife left him and he committed suicide in his later years.
Excellent video! Thanks, Tim.
Excellent, and so clear. Thank you.
Great , informative presentation! Thanks !
Very interesting and INFORMATIVE! Thank you Sir. I was not aware of that hole or gorge under that structure. Wow! I bet there is still alot of stuff artifacts buried under it.
Thank you for the history lesson.
Great work, thanks!!!
As a Civil War history buff in my 70s who has studied this war for 60 years and read hundreds of soldier accounts from both sides. The more I learn about this period and the 50 years post war, the more skeptical I have become. It was a period in time when embellishment, especially decades after the fact became the norm. So many of these personal accounts have become very suspect as to the accuracy and truth.
Some Corporal and a couple privates put it there because some Lieutenant didn’t know were to put it and that spot looked good to him.
👌👏 Thank you!
Sorry for the second comment !! Paul was our tour guide & he was fantastic and I should have asked at the time but when we were on little round top looking down to the left is that devil's den? I've been to it but, I just wasn't sure at Little round top looking down if that was it or not.
So you gonna go in there and give us a shot of the spring then?
There is a UA-cam channel called The Wandering Woodsman who went into the cave. He was crawling on his belly most of the time and he came out at a different location than he entered. But there was no water or spring where he was at.
Thanks for sharing that! I watched and it was very cool, next time I'm there, I'm going to be looking for that. Not sure I'll go through but at least want to check it out.
@@TaaarrrrHeeeels I'd be afraid of snakes myself, but I'm going to bring a flash light the next time I'm over at that point of the battlefield and look inside. I live in Gettysburg so I'll have to check it out.
@@katrinascreationscrafting I'm not too far from you! The snakes don't bother me so much, it's the hands and knees part that'll keep me out!
I had two Confederate ancestors who were part of the 20th Georgia Infantry Regiment part of Bennings brigade who fought at Devils Den A tough fight for both sides
"Lurking places!!!"
General Hunt
Yes. Last week & 20 years ago at night.
Remember in the movie "Gettysburg", Hood says to Longstreet, "See that rockey ridge over there? They call it the "Devils Den"...
unfortunately that hollywood, it was not called that intil years later after the battle.
@@barryrickert6544 Actually, people from the area called it Devils Den before the battle happened. Its been home to a very big snake. /watch?v=ZZ1g8eq9INo
Yes, I have been to Los Angeles Downtown, New York City Downtown, and San Francisco Downtown... yes I have been to the actual Devil's Den.
that is very interesting but makes sense I wish you could have found the spring and the hole and showed it.
I've heard on a different video of theirs that the spring used to flow from the "Den" but has dried up.
@@blukeblue1235 oh ok thank you now I know not to look for it
Fascinating
Interesting!!
Been to Devils Den in Arkansas looks just like this one
It’s a chain
Thank you
Not destroyed yet? I went there around 68/69 on class field trips.
Just been learned
Cool!

No surprise the government would screw things up 😡
Who gave him the authority to call it devil's den!
Well that was a loud, annoying, history nerd rant
