Marina Cherkasova & Sergei Shakhrai - 1977 World Championship FS [QUAD TWIST]
- This has only previously been shared previously as a partial recording, so here is the complete programme including the first ever quad twist completed at a world championships. Their debut was controversial due to the profound size differene between the two and they quickly became known as a one-and-a-half pair. Their coach Stanislav Zhuk continued to pair tiny girls with fully grown men with considerable success paving teh way for the most famous of the one-and-a-half pairs, at least in their earliest days, Gordeeva & Grinkov.

Thank you for sharing this. I loved it. Really wonderful skating, though she does look no older than a 9 or 10 year old girl. The only blatant errors I saw were on what I assume were supposed to be side by side double axels. Their speed throughout the skate was very impressive, and I thought they had a lovely line & presentation. Also the music was light and happy instead of heavy and dour, as in some Russian pair skating. I would have given them higher artistic marks.
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this rare footage! It is impressive that this pair was able to go from the “old school pairs skating” seen here, mostly consisting of numerous lifts and twists, to meeting more “modern” standards, with throws and SBS triples just a season or two later.
Marina may have been small (and I know how us North Americans generally feel about these “rag doll” pairs), but look at her edges, speed, soft knees/ankles, agility, springy-yet-super-smooth flow across the ice, and the lines she creates. She has SUPERB fundamentals…which not too many Soviet/Russian skaters have historically displayed.
Ekaterina Gordeeva states in her book that this pair was one of her favorites. In addition to the quad twist I also saw a throw catch triple axel towards the end of the program. This team doesn’t lack energy that’s for sure.
When I see the pairs like this (including the young G&G) I can't help remembering the Protopopovs who were a mature married couple of similar size. He could easily lower her back to the ice with one arm even into late middle/old age. Give me the Protopopovs any day.
I happen to agree with you but then again, I always admire athleticism. I think this sport has an inherent tension between the athletic and the balletic, technical and artistic. The Protopopovs were always exceptionally artistic and beautiful and their rivals at the time were Mishin and Moskavina (whatever happened to those two? LOL - I am joking of course) who were the more athletic.
@@ddjr6673 I could easily have included that couple as well as Rodnina and Zaitsev and other mature Russian couples. It's the "dad and daughter" (as @bemar1972 said below) pairings that I object to. Pairs skating is supposed to involve a man and a woman, not a little girl. Also agree on the tension between athleticism and artistry. I feel strongly that skating suffers when those two get out of balance.
@@bevinboulder5039 We are in agreement for sure :)
Thank you for posting this rare footage. I always read about this pair but never saw them. Captivating. I wonder what happened when she grew
Fantastic!
The speed was very nice here.
The disparity in their comparative sizes seem like an unfair advantage compared to most other pairs
Athletic..but the height differential is disturbing aesthetically...
Wow... Thank you again, Floskate I have fallen down a Floskate rabbit hole.... must go to bed!
It doesn't matter their age or how well they skate. The are so mismatched physically it detracts from the entire performance.
Wow! I never heard this girl's name before but is clearly sensational!, she reminds me of Romanian gymnast Daniela Silivaș who was also sensational, xxx
Would anyone know the name of the opening music to this programme ( up to the : 50 mark ) ?
This is russian folk music "Vdol po piterskoy"
Yes, Marina was small in stature, but this is a purely athletic way by their coach - great Zhuk. We're not surprised when we don't see tall big ladies in gymnastics, or short ladies in basketball? :) In Russia, fans often call such couples "dad and daughter" :)
Not a big fan to see a child in championship for adults.
Wow! 19 elements here, 9 (!) of them are difficult, extraordinarily original and innovative:
- 4 (!) jumps to toe lasso lift+twist at the end (Rodnina did only 1-2 jump to lift), difficult entry and exit in one lift, first time
- 6 (!!!) jumps combination 1A+1Lo+eul+2S+eul+2S
- two step in lasso+flip over and axel lasso+flip over (3 flip over)
- 4twist - clean! first four revolutions element in figure skating!
- death spiral FI+flip over+FI+flip over+BI , so 4 (!) changes here - her direction, his hand, her foot, her catch of foot ! - never ever done before and after
- difficult back lasso and axel lasso lifts in one program (seems not done before), today 5B and 5A lift
- another 6 jumps combo 1/2+1/2+jump+2T+eul+2S
- pair combo with 5 (!!!) small lifts - never ever done before and after
- 4 hip level lifts combo
Wonderful observation! I still remember the sad day when the ISU prohibited flip-over death spirals after the 1978 season…
omg...very cheap jumps, any throw-jump...and the twist was not clean!
@@piramis7615 As I am sure others have said thousands of times before, if you want to go with today’s rules in assessing the great skaters of significance, you’d never be able to appreciate the rich history of our great sport and how it has progressed. Just in the last 50 years of the sport, there would have NEVER been Janet Lynns, Yuka Satos, Dorothy Hamills, Emi Watanabes, Robin Cousinses, Babilonia-Gardners, not to mention Rornina-Zaitsevs. Just because rules change and the ISU change the ways in which they envision what great skating should look like, that doesn’t discredit the accomplishments of the skaters that competed in alignment with the rules in effect at the time. I find it offensive that somebody would call their skills “cheap,” merely by today’s standards without knowing the historical significance.
@@nondescriptnyc nothing of what you write corresponds to the real facts. all you are doing here is to insinuate something to invent something. the proof are all the couples that you could see in this time and even before with the appropriate standart!
@@piramis7615 4twist was really clean with one foot landing. They did not do throws. Jumps exept 2axel was all clean.
What a fabulous performance! However, I am surprised that they did not do a throw jump although not required during that figure skating era. floskate, thank you for sharing!
I can see why one would wonder about that! In 1977, throws were a bit more than “not required” and, instead, North American and German pairs doing difficult throws ostensibly weren’t rewarded very much…at all. Instead, difficult variations of flip over lifts, one-arm lifts, hand-free lifts, etc. as well as twist jumps (2A and 3A twists, 3Lz or 4 Lz twists, etc.) were valued more explicitly through the 1970s. For instance, the judges often justified not giving Babilonia/Gardner the very top marks, citing that they didn’t have difficult lifts or twists (they didn’t have 2A or triple twists, and their stunningly beautiful lifts weren’t quite acrobatic).
Although the expectations had changed to promote more balanced programs by 1980 with throws, SBS jumps, lifts, and twists, the judges were able to “look the other way” w/ Rodnina-Zaitsev in Lake Placid, thanks to the fuzzy 6.0 scoring system. But the two Zhuk pairs (this couple and Pestova/Leonovich) showed up to Lake Placid w/ throw 2As, nicely adapting to the new standards, placing pretty well-sandwiching Magar/Bewersdorf, who did hard throws from 2A, 3S, to a 3L all in one program, IIRC.
@@nondescriptnyc I said "not required" because back in 1977, there were no prescribed elements that must be included in the free skate programs. Obviously, in today's world of figure skating, there is a specific number of required elements that are part of both the short and long programs for all figure skating disciplines.
This is such a mixed reaction for me. I love love their speed and attack, their creativity with unexpected moves and entries/exits (lifts, combo spin, death spiral). Their sbs jumps are fast and intricate (despite her singling the 2axels). However, she looks so young and tiny. While she has solid edges and skating skills, the relation between the two of them is cold and immature, almost 2 skating as 2 versus two skating as one. The program felt too long and repetitive as a result. But I love the speed so much.
Agreed. While this is an impressive display of tricks and unusual moves, I find little in the way of choreographic interest or expressiveness. This pair basically moves from one element to the next - there's not much in between.
It was after this though that the ISu eventually banned 12 year olds from senior competition
Interesting. She is half his size. They did some great skills, but this just looks strange to me
How old is the girl?
She was 12 here.
Is the quad twist at 1:35?
It is, yes.
@@floskate Thanks for confirming.
Nice to see this again, but I never really liked or approved of these "one and a half " pairings. I always felt it was cheating. She's a great skater though.

a very poor program without jumps, this was not standard for 1977!
