Your camera work showed what a beast that course truly is. Your new licence plate shows the same about you! Well done! Thanks for documenting the struggle and the glory!!
Well done. I have done that 100 km race two times and the 55km once. Two out of three times I got rain and lightning too. That fire!!!! Thanks for the video. I watched it all and enjoyed it.
Felicitaciones. Muchas gracias por compartir tu experiencia y una zona tan hermosa. Mi Pais se caracteriza por sierras (elevación máxima 613 metros), por lo tanto ver esos picos con nieve nos encanta. Saludos desde Uruguay.
Just amazing. The lightning starting the fire was crazy. Also, those cliffs were epic....with my history of tripping on trails that would be pretty sketchy. So worth it though...those mountains....thanks for a great race vid!
Man it was legit scary on that talus/scree with the lightning storm! Once it picked up, so did my pace as much as I could on that stuff. HA. Thanks, Dan!
The horseflies!!! They pissed me off. Was hoping that they’d stop biting at 9k+ but nooooo. They kept right on tracking you. I used them as motivation to keep moving faster. Great course. Enjoyed my couple of finishes. Already miss it and happy to see it’s still growing. Great camera work and I, too, experience HAFE. 😅
I don't know what to say except "Wow!" just "Wow!". Who knew Idaho had the goods... so beautiful. Alex I'll take HAFE for $200. Dude that exposure starting at 21:36 was scary! Congrats on the finish!!!! You inspire me to get stronger, push harder and go farther Steven... thank you.
Yeah man who knew Idaho was so beautiful! Man that exposure on the talus/scree was crazy; that lightning storm was intense. Thank you for the kind words, Sage!
Wow! Congratulations on a great race! Breathtaking scenery (literally, right!) Some of those rocky, thin ridgetops, and the lightening, made me gasp! The experience of a lifetime.
Outstanding finish! Congratulations. One of your best videos. I really liked how you mixed in the aerial shots during the race. The shots of the fire/scree slope/storm>> Intense!
Great video! I was there crewing some friends this year! Good to know about the gas too! :) I had wondered why I was so gassy! lol! Well done! You did awesome!
Congratulations!! What an incredibly beautiful course! Only a slight ankle roll is great, and I'm glad the HAFE wasn't fatal! 😆 The guy who yelled like and subscribe as he passed was a riot. Congratulations again on crushing such a challenging race, WHILE filming it!!
Nicely done, glad there wasn't lightning in 2018. I would have asked that hiker you passed if he was through hiking the CDT, that might have cheered him up :)
@@UltraTrailSteven He might have just been tired of pulling over for all the racers. I used my buff to swat those pesky flies. Another good race close by is River of no Return just south in Challis. That one is about 70 miles or 108k. No crazy talus fields on that one and the average elevation is a bit lower, although you still top out close to 10k.
Gnarly course indeed! That scree field right at the end was the cherry on top of the course for sure. Massive congrats again. Crazy how you managed to keep filming during the storm!
Great job on the race! I even made an appearance in this video at 2:45 just a little before you passed me 😂. Seriously though it was a beautiful course. Great job capturing so much of what this experience was like.
Thank you for sharing your journey, I actually DNF'd the race a few years ago due to altitude sickness (I'm from Idaho). Happy to hear you're from Tennessee. The Pistol was actually my first 100 miler. Be sure to check out Standhope and RONR for other beautiful Idaho Ultras.
HI Ryan! Thanks for watching. The Pistol is a great event; I have volunteered there a few times. I have heard of RONR, but I will have to look up Standhope. Thanks!
Epic video and content, thank you Steven. The only problem is, it encourages me to keep flying over from the UK to run. Your channel isn’t good for my bank balance😂. I think you need to do an ultra over here?
Hahaha glad you like it Paul! I would love to come run a race in the UK! If I were to fly over, I would like at least a 100km trail race. Any recommendations?
Great video. You mentioned something as you were entering the cut out aid station about swelling / puffiness due to too much electrolytes in your system. Would you consider doing a video along the lines of recognizing what your body is telling you during runs; especially longer runs? I'm just getting into longer distance running and I wouldn't have put my swelling hands together with a hydration imbalance, I'd have just thought it was from swinging them back and forth. Consequently I wouldn't have known to switch to straight water for a section to correct it. I'm sure there are many other things that I and other runners either don't recognize or mis-read and don't take corrective action on. I appreciate your content. Thanks
Hi Mike, thank you! That is a great suggestion... However, it is a really difficult topic to cover as it is so dependent on the individual. Some of it can be covered in generalities, so I will definitely think about this. To get started, I would highly recommend reading Relentless Forward Progress. It has some great information regarding hydration, nutrition, and electrolytes, and even has a nice chart!
😲 Dude! Epic race. The vastness of the place is amazing. And seeing a lightning strike fire start on the ridge is crazy. That weather went from sunny to sketchy quick too. Minus the horse flies, I really would love to run that race. To do all this and still run 14:30 is insane. BTW, how you get the drone shots?
It is such an epic race; the views are stunning! It was a fun race I won't soon forget. I got the drone shots the day before. My friend and I drove to 4 of the aid station locations. Thanks!
Congratulations!! What a beautiful and challenging course! I’d love to do a race like that but am from Michigan and don’t know how I’d do with the altitude. Did you go early to acclimate or do anything special to prepare? Really enjoyed your video! Well done.
Thank you! I live at 1600', so I was nervous too. I went out Wednesday, 3 days before the race, and spent a lot of time above 8,000' in those couple of days. I felt pretty good.
I’m ready to settle in, just tested positive AGAIN so I’ve got all the time in the world. I kept wondering if you would go above 10k ft and sure enough!
This is SO BEAUTIFUL! Crazy seeing the snow, and the skinny trail between the tall trees and the burn areas…coming up on the cloudy portion…and today I learned about HAFE…wow that ledge!!
I feel bad for liking this comment since you tested positive AGAIN! UGH! I hope you feel better! Yes we went over 10k at least three times! I hope the GoPro showed the views well, because it was so beautiful! Thank you much, Celine!

I’m not sure I put enough exclamation marks in my last comment. 🤷🏻♂️🤣
HAHA Thanks, Chad! I appreciate it! It was a beautiful course.
My favorite part about early morning starts is seeing that long line of headlamps as people leave the start. Great video as always!!
I love that too! So cool! Thank you!
Well done. I have done that 100 km race two times and the 55km once. Two out of three times I got rain and lightning too. That fire!!!! Thanks for the video. I watched it all and enjoyed it.
