This is, by far, the easiest way I’ve found to make super sturdy workbench legs from a 4x4.
You can use a circular saw to cut the notches for your 2x4 rails, but I found it was even easier to use my sliding mitre saw set to a specific depth. And no chiseling was required this way either.
See how I easily made mine.
Finally! I have been looking for this. You would UA-cam would have a lot of this notched technique video. Nope. Just what I needed. Thanks. And using the mitre saw - so easy!!!
I was floored at how easy they are to make! And if you put a small piece of scrap wood behind it, the blade will cut all the way to the back too.
Fantastic work and a great usage of your sliding mitre saw. I'm redoing my own UA-cam studio and need to put together a workbench tomorrow - this is going to come in handy. +1 Sub!
To avoid the high ridge on the back, you should put a length of sacrificial wood between the workpiece and the fence, which would push your workpiece forward enough that the blade will clear the back so that there is no ridge. An added bonus is that it will prevent blowout.
Agreed!! I discovered that little tip after I made these legs. It does work like a charm!!
this is exactly the video i needed. thank you

Yeah but how do you put it together?
There's a whole series on the build for this workbench here heartwoodart.com/workbench-build/
You can see how nicely the legs and frame went together. It's so easy I doubt I'll ever do it another way now.
There are many similar projects in Woodglut's plans.
