"Black intellectuals who have no intellect." I hollered! Some of us in the black community are really drawn to a wealthy person preaching at us or talking in a way that feels like a barbershop debate setting where they think they're 'dropping knowledge' but it's just basic, problematic rhetoric.

Yes exactly! We really act like rich people are better than us, so we just believe whatever they say. We attribute intelligence, and nobility to these people just for having money and it’s embarrassing
Because a lot of these blacks with money are entertainers. They’re former broke people who are in bad contracts with the same people Kanye doesn’t like. But he didn’t have a problem when they were signing his checks and inviting him to exclusive events.

When I heard he was being dropped for antisemitism, I was upset that it didn’t happen when he made that dumb ass comment that slavery was a choice. Then I thought about it. What incentive did they have to drop him when he made those comment? Especially when black people, the people who should have been the most upset about that comment, being the very people justifying, and excusing his actions. So at that point I couldn’t be mad at those companies. I think In the black community defends, and forgive problematic figures in our community, which is why I no longer argue with people about these problematic people, I simply stop supporting those I have issue with. It’s because of this someone like R Kelly was able to do what he did and for so long.

  • @ninagrace-lee8323

I think the problem is the lack of accountability from true black intellectuals. That isn’t to say that there aren’t any black people (historians, thought leaders, commentators, etc) who exist. Y’all just don’t get the same level of clout because a lot of us in the community are anti-intellectuals. So it’s hard for y’all to hold their feet to the fire publicly when you don’t have the mic!
We don’t believe in objective truth and facts anymore. Everything is about aesthetics, wealth, and proximity to whiteness. So many educated black people have platforms that are overlooked because their measured approach to these topics isn’t sensational enough.
40 years ago I doubt Charlemagne would be considered anyone’s leader. He’s an entertainer, not an intellectual. Being curious doesn’t mean you have the credentials or the expertise.

We have so many black intellectuals in academia publishing research so why aren’t we boosting them? When did being a rapper turned podcaster become a real career trajectory, to be courted by politicians?? I’m frustrated

All of this! I literally watch the shift of blk folks degrading blk intellectuals. The think pieces of why higher education, academia & intellectuals aren’t important, creditable and don’t matter is insane. I don’t understand how we got here. Why do we praise, honor & uplift aesthetics & wealth over our legit intellectuals. The argument always has something to do with obtaining the “YT man’s credentials,” doesn’t mean they’re more knowledgeable then folks like charlagne simply because they studied or obtained a higher education. Yet blk folks are obsessed with the guise of proximity to ytness & wealth.
It’s kinda hard for our intellectuals to hold folks like Candace, Kanye accountable because like you said they don’t exhibit the right aesthetics & have clout for folks to even care what they have to say. Maybe they need to become more sensational?.. become more like the pundits? Switch up their approach so that the growing number of blk anti intellectuals will actually listen to what they have to say in order to deplatform folks like charlagnmane, Kanye & these podcast bros

A little western history note. In most of Europe, Jews were prohibited from owning land. Being prevented from that type of self-sufficiency. Money was considered "dirty" to handle, so to survive they learned to handle money, because they were seen as "dirty". There are no coincidences when you see any group of people, whether we are divided by race, sex gender ( no matter the social construct) learn to perfect certain skills because it is what they are relegated to perform without being perceived as a threat to the status quo. E.g. why so many black people still relishing in the entertainment industry instead of out performing in professions that have a greater chance of shaping desired change for long-term economic and financial futures n their own communities.

No, Jehovah Witnesses are not the only ones to learn about the atrocities of WWII. In my city, all the public schools teach this subject, from kindergarten to high school. And of course, public schools means mostly black schools. We have a large, active population of people of Hebrew faith and heritage. As a matter of fact, my mother tells me, these people and their businesses, were some of the few white people, who were friendly and helpful to black folks, when they migrated north, in the 1950’s.
They also, advocated strongly for our schools and textbooks to include what happened during the war, in the curriculum. If only black people could organize similarly, to have our history in America taught, at every grade, at every public school! Then maybe there wouldn’t be so many dumb azzes, like Kanye, all over the Internet!
