RIP Rick Parfitt, what a live performer, great Guitarist , one of the Greats 😎
To me Quo is kinda like AC/DC - no-nonsense, you know what you'll get, but more often than not songs harder to play than you first expect. Sure, technically not so difficult, but really nailing the groove is sometimes quite tricky. :)
Another reason why they're so popular!
Well, you'd be wrong then lol. Status Quo have changed up their sound a little bit over the years.
Rick Parfitt did not use the normal Open G tuning, with the 6th string tuned down to D as advised by this video. Rick made his own Lick Library instructional DVD, Rick Parfitt's Rhythm Method, still available from Lick Library. In that DVD he explains that he tunes his 6th string up to G in unison with the 5th string tuned down to the same G. As far as I am aware, the use of Open tuning was a Rick Parfitt thing. I think Francis Rossi normally played in Standard.
Oh wow !Thanks for the insight!
Apart from Down Down where Francis plays open G as demonstrated by the guy in this video...... Rick plays standard on Down Down
Quo without doubt is the best live band I have ever seen. Head and shoulders above Zep, Sabbath, etc, including the 2 chord wonders ACDC. Long live the QUO.
The intro for Little Blue Eyed Lady as played on the Hello album is one of my favorite song intros ever.
Its similar to big fat mamma in some ways I think
Rick Parfitt made a great dvd on Quo rhythm. It's really great to see how he plays those Quo classics.
Hold you back is my favourite of all time 😊
Many many years ago a music professor pulled a few quo tracks apart and concluded that their music is far more technical than people think and very hard to replicate perfectly
He was spot on.
You read once Andrew L. Cope's "Status Quo: Mighty innovators of 70s rock" he boils all their criticals.
Cheers Leigh, really enjoying these short videos, only just started seeing them in last few days despite being a Lick Library subscriber for a long time.
Quo were one of the first bands that got me wanting to play guitar, but always found them deceptively difficult to get spot on, this really helps.
Love your style, really easy to follow. Keep it up.
Thanks for watching Chris!
Really enjoyed that buddy . Seen a lot of local bands failing at Quo songs because they don't properly listen . I've played all these numbers over the years , but never had Tabs or videos , only 45's and LP's . Quite a revelation .
Thank you for doing this Status Quo licklibrary lesson! These guys are sooooo great! 👍
Our pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it!
@@licklibrary Only Down Down has a punky feel. Boogiepunk if you like
Enjoyed the videos by the way😊👍
Well said about the stamina..something that the P takers always overlook. Another of their strengths is that they're bloody good at what they do!
Ive always liked the early 70s sound when rick was playing a gibson sg. The gibson crunch from Rick against the telecaster twang from Francis was a sonic marvel!!
I agree . I think Rick would change because the feel of a Telecaster matches the aggressive playing more than the SG , which responds to a lighter touch .
@@chasleask8533 I might be wrong but I think at one point Rick said you could throw his Tele across the room and it remained in tune, in the marquee footage it looks like he has the SG strung with lighter strings . With his heavier train track strings the neck of the SG would have been under extreme stress to the point of breaking .I wonder was he having tuning issues trying out heavier strings resulting in a change to his Telecaster?
Love the Quo...discovered them in the 70s with the album 'On the Level' and have been faithful ever since. There are so many iconic riffs that Quo have produced...all as worthy as the other, however, 'Down, Down' is my favorite...which, I am trying to master at the moment...it's a lot more technical than you think, as it is with all their unique songs. Your lesson has been a great help...keep them coming, thank you.
Great video 💪
Again fantastic video .
Appreciated!
Brilliant Stuff!!
Thanks so much!
The demo for Down Down on youtube, recorded in some hotel on the US, is pure RNR iconic history in the making!!!!
Great video, thanks!
I’d love to see how to play Hold You Back.
Cheers!
Ive been a Quo fan over 50 years and best riff has to be the start of Whatever You Want
I agree 👍
thx for the riffs can you post what your amp and guitar settings are plz
Caroline, Rick always also hit the intro on the upstroke👍 I've followed them for 35 years and play myself. It's very difficult, especially on the thickness of the strings he used. Best wishes, Mark.
I should have said, he played on the upstroke and downstroke on Caroline
Wow, what a collection and set up!
I’ve read their autobiography, that Live Aid performance was all the more amazing considering they were absolutely off their faces on coke
After they had opened Live Aid they spent the rest of the day in Francis and Ricks happy corner. Many of the other performers knew where the fun was that day.
Then they found out they had to go back on stage at the end.
Status Quo is great idea for a band name. And Quo have plenty of very good songs. Sometimes simple, but effective. Lots of great sobggs are simple, for example Deep Purple "Smoke on the Water", stuff from AC/DC. First must be able to have simple ideas. If "simple songs" would be that easy, everybody could write them.
Other great Status Quo songs: "4500 (45 hundred times),"Rain", "Hold you back", "Mystery Song", "Red Sky".... and many more...
Of Quo many people think they are mainly old, but they still rock. And Richie Malone does an excellent job.
What was the amp used in this video? I'm surprised humbuckers can sound so much like Quo, never would have thought
One of the best Quo Songs is neither a straight Rock 'n' Roll nor a shuffle, but their approach of a Bo Didley / Clave Groove called "That's A Fact" from the "Blue For You" Record...Tight and in the Pocket, with more than 3 chords and a great bass movement. Even some rhythmical changes. If you don't know the song just fill the gap...
whats totally shocked me is i actually had DD correct = from someone whod played sweet home alabama wrong for thirty years !
AAAAAnd not one mention of Mystery Song. Now that's a bloody riff.
The 2nd Riff he played sounded like BTO's "Takin' Care of Business"
Mystery song and hold you back. Dave
Mystery Song!
If I suggest a Quo song to something who don't know them at all I allways suggest Paper Plane. If anyone who only know the singles from the 70's I suggest a live version of 4500 times or, if we have less time down the dustpipe in the live 1970 version
Down down looks easy to play but man more difficult than everyone thinks
It's horrendously difficult, especially that opening sequence. Even Rossi got it wrong a fair few times!
Quo oooooo o
It’s a great analytical video but what you’ve just demonstrated is that no one can play quite like Rick or Francis. Frame plays down down so loose but still accurately across the strings. It’s uncopyable. Ricks playing on Caroline is impossible to replicate. Richie Malone is 99% there but it’s not just the pace and power, it’s the phrasing. Listen very carefully to Rick’s version. There are minute delays to some down strokes. More obvious in the studio version but still there live. But no loss of timing magical.
When it comes to playing Quo riffs playing them on a Telecaster should be compulsory!
and yet, ironically Down Down was recorded using a Strat on Francis part, and Rick used Gibson LP junior up to between about 1970-74
@@leesloan8216 I never knew that. I did know Francis played a Strat occasionally. He is pictured on the cover of the Blue For You album with one. I also saw them live in I think '79 and when it came to 'Dirty Water' he swapped to what looked like a Gibson. It looked like a Les Paul but without the pickup switch in the usual place. As for Rick he played a number of guitars apart from the Tele he and Francis are known for.
Lots of them were recorded with Gibsons and other guitars. The telecaster thing is mainly a live thing.
Unfortunately people per sieve quo as a 3 chord band and class them so ,when in fact they were always much much more .
You read once Andrew L. Cope's "Status Quo: Mighty innovators of 70s rock" he boils all their criticals.
Edit the subtitles, it refers to rifts....
People accused Quo of only playing three chords - the so called 2 chord trick - and of being formulaic. Whatever, it worked, and was brilliant.
Quite. I lost count of the number of chords used in these 4 songs alone
You read once Andrew L. Cope's "Status Quo: Mighty innovators of 70s rock" he boils all their criticals.
Big Fat Mama, 4500 times, hold you back
why do people these riffs always kind of nervously....wrong rhtyhm etc etc
John Fogerty.
totally, wrongly called 3 chord boogie rock, dog of 2 heads is a straight ahead hard rock blues album, deceptively simple
Their songs are said to all sound the same , but I felt the Stones were more guilty for that
Status Quo are NOT punk rock 🤬 They are Rock blues. Get it right boy.
Ah but there's definitely some punk rock in them! :)
No there not punk wot an insult
Punk?
Boogie Rock Hard Pop Country
@@filip_sss1 Not pop, country, punk, western, rap or jazz. Quo are a rock blues band. Period
@@AndyMartin401 sorry disagree there fan of quo since 74 they have pop just listen to album in the army & they play c&w listen to cross that bridge from ain't complaining or address book quo dabbled in c&w & pop after 1981 sadly😪🤘
Rocking All Over The World is not a shuffle. You got sth mixed up there.
And Paper Plane is not a shuffle either
Sorry, mate: Rockin all over has another rhythm style...
It's no a Quo song. Is a song written by John Fogerty, formerly of Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Under rated??? By who?? 😂
You are not hitting it anywhere near as hard
