Salaamun alaykum. It doesn't seem reasonable for an army of elephants to come from Yemen across the desert to come to Makkah. Could there be other meaning for ashabil fil?
وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته
It is probable that there were one or more elephants in the army, as they numbered 60,000 and could carry water and food for the elephants with them. Another possibility is that they found water and food for the elephants along the way. However, a stronger piece of evidence for the presence of elephants in the army is that when the Arabs were asked when the Prophet (SAW) was born, they would say it was the year Abrahah came with the elephants from Yemen to destroy the Kaaba. Historical accounts from Ibn Ishaq and Ibn Hisham reveal that Arab poets wrote many poems mentioning the attack of the elephants. For me, the strongest reason to believe in their presence is that Allah (SWT) has mentioned it in His Book, the Quran, which leaves no room for doubt for a true believer.
And only Allah (SWT) knows best.
