I never wanted to touch the carb just cause I had no idea what to do. That video was great, I will definitely save some money by doing this myself. Cheers. Keep the great vids coming.
4 years later and you’re still saving people money ! Just did this an hour ago.. unfortunately I’m coming from Colorado and riding in PA so I got my jets replaced.. road it didn’t feel right.. procrastinated until tonight and changed my clip position from 1 to 3 and it still doesn’t feel as powerful or crispy as it did in Colorado I bought the bike used so I couldn’t tell ya what exact needle is in there (other than it ran perfect in Colorado lol) so I moved the clip to position 3 (what I read in the manual for OEM) and it still doesn’t feel right 😓 gotta go pick up the right needle I guess lol
Great personality and attitude. No-one started with a works sponsored mechanic when I was picking up riding in the middle of Australia. It was mates who rode alongside you, laughed with you and enjoyed doing the same things some crazy yank is doing on UA-cam. Some of those thingeys and whatsit's do have names. Needles sit in "seats", the nut retainer thing. Remove the throttle assembly (needle bit) first before attempting the bowl. This allows greater leverage without bending needle, allows for straighter jet removal and replacement (cross thredding at your angle with straight tool). Plastic guide on bottom of spring is set snug in spring for a reason, retension and extension of spring is measured for true length of a spring. Not seating the spring at its propper length can cause obstruction and bunching. Your blogging is inspiring for me and my 4yr old son. Educational and addictive. Thankyou
The most I've learned from a video in a long time..great filming, great explanations, and your terminology such as "little white plastic thing" and "this thing, I don't know what it's called" is my kind of language. I now know exactly what to do and how to do it, and I'll definitley be subscribing. Keep up the great work, ride hard, and be safe!!
i must say the single most important lesson this vid demonstrates is the spring trick on the slide....that is golden to a newbie and once you do all this and reassemble and bike fires right up...the confidence boost that inspires is priceless and wiill give u more confidence in future tuning sessions. but on the spring method ...until i learned that.. i would feed cable on the bottom of slide and lock it in ONLY AFTER i had put the spring on and as id compress the spring..id hold it in the most compressed position and then use a pair of small vise grips to clamp on the wire right below the spring so it stays in the position it needed to get cable end into groove and seated right..then id pop off the vise grips and slide her in the carb housing... its really frustrating and on average that step took me around 45 mintes of trial and error before i got it locked in correctly and was the single most difficult step for me to complete....so with the spring twist on method....the hole process will go light years faster!!!!
That little cup at the bottom of spring! Gotta watch that tongue inside of boot. REAL IMPORTANT! Your video with the cup up on the throttle wire FIRST and slide the cup down in SLIDE with the tongue inside of keeper is important. The spring trick was dead on. THANK YOU. Without that trick the cup is a 50/50 of seating correctly. Glad I saw this much earlier. Saved me time and tooling issues. Light at the end of the tunnel was quick.
Hey broski. Quality video. When searching for diy videos there's a lot of garbage, and then there's good ones like yours. Always grateful to the individuals who can pull it off God bless
I think you should talk about reading Piston Wash/Scavenge Pattern when discussing proper jetting setup. Other than EGT's (Exhaust Gas Temps), a proper wash on your piston is the only real way to know if you've got the bike jetted right, without peppering a piston. Reading numbers in a manual is fine, but it doesnt tell you if thats where your bike should truly be. Proof is in the carbon!
I just wanted to say thanks for this video, I re jetted my new 2o17cxw today. First time I've ever done this and your video gave me the confidence to do it!! And it turned out great, runs alot better.
tip... try not to ever use the open end side of the wrenches on any bolt. Always use the box end (preferably 6 sided) to break bolts loose and to tighten.
Damn... i feel like an idiot for struggling with those springs for the past 15 years hahah. Never thought about putting it back like that. Great video!
I have seen lots of great videos on the mechanical aspects of working on the carb, but I wish there was a video that demonstrated symptomatic effects of improper jeting. ie. How the bike runs when to lean or to rich on all 3 components main, pilot and needle.
It was worth the prrice of admission for that tip alone!!! Having chased springs and plastic needle/throttle cable retainers allover my garage, I will gladly try this next time I change the needle on my OKO/PWK clone carb.
Oh Boy... i don't know how often i raged out because of this fucking spring. And now you're showing us the simpleest way doing it without any anger. Dude... thank you for showing me how dumb i am for not realizing this.. :D
Hey a neat trick you can do with your carb is to take the top two vent hoses on your carb and put them in your airbox since only air goes through them. This makes your bike easier to start if you stall in a mudpit or creek where water could be blocking the hoses.
Perfect video! It's really cold in Sweden -15 degrees Celcius (5 F). My KTM 250 EXC (2-stroke) didn't like that at all today. Bike ran fine in little below 0 Celcius (30 F) two weeks ago. I figured it was something with the carb, needing it richer now. Newbie rider, don't know what needles and jets I have installed in my pre-owned 2011 bike. This video gives me confidence to check the carb up and make adjustments. Keep it up, Kyle! Really likes your channel!
Thank you so much!!! you make this stuff so easy!!! been following your channel for awhile now and you have saved me so many headaches!! keep it up bro!!
In the owner's manual you have some information about carburetor tuning, for a start. I'm talking about Ktm, Husky and Husaberg. I don't know about the others.
Don't know if I mentioned this in a previous video comment.......I include a strong, small, flat magnet in my butt bag while on the trail. I do this to magnetically capture the needle clip......to change clip position...press against the magnet....it hangs onto clip.....select what position you want the clip in and, again, press the clip with the magnet. I arrived at this idea after losing a clip/looking for it for an hour in the dust and having to jury-rig a tiny piece of wire to act as a clip. Also, I carry an extra clip in my butt bag in a tiny container.
That spring trick is the best thing I have learned in a long time as my arthritic hands get worse. I recently adopted 3 KTMs and this has been a lifesaver on the 300 and the 440. Which brings to mind a question about the 525: Why have modern 4 stroke carbs become so huge and complicated?
Wow i feel like a dummy that tip with the spring haha the same way it comes off is never fun well ill be doing it your way from now on thanks for the tip
Lol , 300 BLK OUT is very expensive for a lil yappy mutt like that........ new sub here , keep up the awesome work you're doing ! I'm wanting to get back into dirt bikes and your 4 stroke vs 2 stroke videos have got me thinking now . Had my mind set on a 450 but now I'm thinking 2 stoke.........thanks a lot ! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I bought a new 2016 sx 250 . First time I went on it spark plug fouled straight away before I got on track. Anyway to cut it short my air fuel mixture was out by half a turn so I put it back to settings out Manuel which was 2 turns from right the way in n haven't had any problems since
of course its easy to take out and reinstall a carb and jets....the harder part is knowing what sizes and clip positions to implement in reguards to your specific altitude ,temp, dew points, riding style,.. ratios etc......
Such great content here :) Thanks for sharing it all. You inspired me to create my own little bike channel.. Video's will be up soon, but added you to my list of other great channels already.

Do you have any experience with the spreadsheet for finding the perfect needle for your Keihin? It's called the James Dean Jetting Guide. I found the perfect needle for my '89 Honda CR250 by using it.
I have a 2003 KTM 125 SX, I need to remove the float bowl in order to change the pilot jet, which is a bummer. It would be nice if I could access both the main and pilot jet from the center hex cap.
solved the problem now it was a split in the inlet rubber so when i rapped the throttle on it opened up letting excess air into the mix killing the engine thanks anyway
I can make jet needles by hand. hand made needles. i made for my Husky 2 stroke. the metal is phosfor bronze.may be i 'm the only one who can do handmade needles. after assembled the bike moved very good.
Just courious you mention that bigger the number the richier will be but by tour graphic number 5 was on top that means that the needle goes down. If that's the case you restrict the air and the bike will be leaner. What im missing here?.
Great video... .. The jet needle ONLY sticks into the main jet at idle and ...maybe...maybe....up to 1/16 throttle position-ONLY! .The needle jet (the hole that the needle slides up and down in is located above the main jet and sits at the bottom of the venturi) and the jet needle (needle with clip) moves with the slide(throttle) The jet needle comes in different diameters and different tapers and taper lengths and overall lengths to facilitate accurate jetting. The needle jet comes in different bores (holes, and some have tall damns that actually stick up in the main bore or venturi of the carb).. the taller the "damn" the leaner the needle jet. ---you don't see many of these anymore.. ....................................... This is a great video that takes into account the altitude (VERY important) and the temperature (also important) rules for jetting a two stroke dirt bike/atv. ............ The biggest (and hardest) issue with proper jetting is when you put a much bigger carburetor on a highly modified engine.. having a selection of slides with different cutaway's, a selection of different diameter and tapered jet needles, a couple different needle jets, a few different size pilot jets, and a selection of main jets is rather expensive.. a GREAT TUNER will have these items in stock!! (I do). ...........one tip... spark plugs are cheaper than a highly modified engine - go extra rich..(not extra oil!)... find someone that can prove they know what they are doing.. that means can explain exactly how things work and not someone that has "tinkered" with a dirt bike!!
I have a big bore from a 125 to a 134, I have the stock jetting which actually works for where I am. I called multiple places and they said it should be running lean but it seems to be running rich. So my question is can I go with the factory jetting chart, and is my big bore requiring a richer or leaner jet. The main is a 380 which seems massive. Main-380 Needle jet-45 Needle-6beg20-68 3rd from top Air screw-2-1/2
When you pulling the needle and throttle cable out of the carburator at 6:50. What is creating that resistance and pushing the needle and lever back inside the carburator? I'm worry to pull the needle up? Even needle and slider are moving easily, I feel like I will pull too much on the spring. Do I have to release or pull anything to get the needle out of carb body?
Its starting to warm up now and elevation where i live is about 900 feet. So whats type of jet would you recommend for 900 feet elevation and about 50-70 degree weather?
My spark plug has a caramel color in the center where the probe is and it a little dark on the outsides, sometimes is wet with oil on the outside but isnt bad
I never wanted to touch the carb just cause I had no idea what to do. That video was great, I will definitely save some money by doing this myself. Cheers. Keep the great vids coming.

“Until we get EFI on these bikes, which we probably won’t” aged like milk, but I’m glad :)
7 years later we finally get TBI two strokes
I watched a dozen videos on carbs and it all sounded like Chinese to me. Watched your video and it all clicked. Thank you, your a natural instructor.
Glad to help.
I love how easy you make that look and you explain it real well! I feel pretty confident my 2 stroke will be fine thanks to you lol

Damnit why haven't I thought of that spring trick before... I've shot countless springs across the garage trying to get them on lmao

i like the way you put the spring back on and the joke about 300 blackout was funny
+Colehenry Just keeping it real.
Hey broski. Quality video. When searching for diy videos there's a lot of garbage, and then there's good ones like yours. Always grateful to the individuals who can pull it off God bless
THANK YOU! Saved me taking it to the store and wasting money, was actually enjoy-able learning this for myself.
Thanks! I wondered why there was such a big bolt under the bowl! Saved me 20 mins :)

he hasnt made the video about piston wash cause he doesnt know shit about it.
This is a video about how to do it on the fly, your comment is kind of out of place
This video helped me so much in tuning my carb on my 250sx! Thank you 100 times over and keep up the awesome videos!
+MotoJ90 I'm really glad to have been able to help out.
Download the KTM jetting app. It will do everything except change the jets and turn the air screw.
I just wanted to say thanks for this video, I re jetted my new 2o17cxw today. First time I've ever done this and your video gave me the confidence to do it!! And it turned out great, runs alot better.
EFi was a cool line
Best line was the suppressed 300 blackout line 😂😂 Rock on bro. I feel that
I thought that dog barking was outside my house. Then I saw your comment and I busted out laughing! Great trick with the spring too! Thanks!
Thanks for making this Kyle; just bought a KTM 300XC, and this helped a lot, especially the trick you used for re-installing the spring!
Neat trick with the slide return spring, I'll be sure to use that if I dont have needle nose pliers on me.
tip... try not to ever use the open end side of the wrenches on any bolt. Always use the box end (preferably 6 sided) to break bolts loose and to tighten.

Great video. Finally carbs make sense. Thank you!
"Now you just twist the spring on . . . "
* jaw hits floor* "D'oh, Why have I never thought of that!"
It was worth the prrice of admission for that tip alone!!! Having chased springs and plastic needle/throttle cable retainers allover my garage, I will gladly try this next time I change the needle on my OKO/PWK clone carb.

+Max Mustergültig You are welcome.
thank you for posting the most easy to follow ie clear vision, audio and instructions, video on 2 stroke carbs.
Very informative. Especially to me, a beginner. It made the carb operating process understandable. Thanks.
Hey a neat trick you can do with your carb is to take the top two vent hoses on your carb and put them in your airbox since only air goes through them. This makes your bike easier to start if you stall in a mudpit or creek where water could be blocking the hoses.

Just returning the favor!
Great video. I would not have attempted installing a new jet and needle without a video like this. Cheers and keep the videos coming!

+BeachHead79 Glad this helped.
Ktm jetting APP is available. Your welcome
Thank you so much!!! you make this stuff so easy!!! been following your channel for awhile now and you have saved me so many headaches!! keep it up bro!!
Glad to have helped.
very helpful. here Korea is about to ice freezed. so jetting is required.. now i know how to do it thx Kyle.
Mate, how do i know wich jets and needles to use in each situations?
In the owner's manual you have some information about carburetor tuning, for a start. I'm talking about Ktm, Husky and Husaberg. I don't know about the others.
Look at your Manual. Some bikes have different carburetor types. Make sure you are adjusting according to the correct type.

I have that same NAPA socket driver that my dad gave me years ago!
I had no idea how to do this. Now at least I have an idea. Thanks!

That’s a good carb spring tip....I will try it...thanks
Thank you for a good hands on video with ktm 2-stroke jetting in hi-quality video!
You are welcome. Thanks for watching. We keep putting out content, so make sure to subscribe and share.
Wow i feel like a dummy that tip with the spring haha the same way it comes off is never fun well ill be doing it your way from now on thanks for the tip
Cody Irvine You are welcome!
First carb work atm. Thanks for the great vid.
you could avoid that mess if you used drain screw and hose to drain the floatbowl. its easy to collect all the gas.
Thanks for the great vids.. This one helped me install a JD jet kit on my 2022 ktm 150sx. Test ride tomorrow!!
Lol , 300 BLK OUT is very expensive for a lil yappy mutt like that........ new sub here , keep up the awesome work you're doing ! Nice videos man! I have watched a few and have been impressed. Well done! Subbed.
Rick Zwierzchowski Thanks Rick. We are going to try to keep the content coming once I get some more time to shoot some footage.
Thanks for the great vid. Very easy to follow.
Great video! Thanks to your buddy for the spring-thing! Ride on.
Great Video for a newbie, thanks!
You don;t need to take off the chain guard, just wiggle the throttle cable down a bit and the carby will rotate fine.
Nice video! Simple and really informative. Keep make like this! Thank's from Brazil
You are welcome.
daamn now that theres tpi bikes and lectron carbs man :D
Thank you the only video that could help me.
Such great content here :) Thanks for sharing it all. You inspired me to create my own little bike channel.. Video's will be up soon, but added you to my list of other great channels already.
I'm glad that people are getting some benefit from it. Thanks for subscribing.
Rocking But Steady Can I contact you via email ? Here is mine marcratheiser@gmail.com
the needle doesn't occupy any of the main jet space. it occupies space in the needle jet (which generally is not considered something you change for a different size).
You are 100% correct. I totally mis-spoke on that part during the filming of this video over 2 years ago.
Do you have any experience with the spreadsheet for finding the perfect needle for your Keihin? It's called the James Dean Jetting Guide. I found the perfect needle for my '89 Honda CR250 by using it.
Kyle the enduro super dad: you should do a shooting channel!
Then you could do crossover episodes. That would appeal to a lot of us i bet
damn man that bike looks great, like you have not gotten it dirty yet!
I can't be the only one that can smell this video am I?
You had me suppressed subsonic lmfao
I have a 2003 KTM 125 SX, I need to remove the float bowl in order to change the pilot jet, which is a bummer. It would be nice if I could access both the main and pilot jet from the center hex cap.
Great video thanks for the info and the spring trick worked great.
+James Lanni I'm glad it helped!
This title should be "How to swap a jet out".
solved the problem now it was a split in the inlet rubber so when i rapped the throttle on it opened up letting excess air into the mix killing the engine thanks anyway
I can make jet needles by hand. hand made needles. i made for my Husky 2 stroke. the metal is phosfor bronze.may be i 'm the only one who can do handmade needles. after assembled the bike moved very good.
Awesome video man
Just courious you mention that bigger the number the richier will be but by tour graphic number 5 was on top that means that the needle goes down. If that's the case you restrict the air and the bike will be leaner. What im missing here?.
I’m at 500 feet with a 2006 ktm 125 sx with fmf gold and fmf shorty, trying to figure out the jetting for winter and summer!
Great video...
.. The jet needle ONLY sticks into the main jet at idle and ...maybe...maybe....up to 1/16 throttle position-ONLY! .The needle jet (the hole that the needle slides up and down in is located above the main jet and sits at the bottom of the venturi) and the jet needle (needle with clip) moves with the slide(throttle)
The jet needle comes in different diameters and different tapers and taper lengths and overall lengths to facilitate accurate jetting.
A rule of thumb is usually go UP one full main jet size for each 1000 Ft. drop closer to sea level.. and the closer to sea level, under 2000 ft., you usually should move the clip position (move the clip down which move the needle up) for every 500 ft. also. ....
..................
Can you go more in depth on how to do such. Like when you where changing the jets, can you explained what you change.
Alec Stentz the jets... you change the jets
Great Video....very informative....Thanks for taking the time to post this up!
Great video man, helped a lot!
Hahaha love that caption towards the end.
What's the difference in doing all this rather than just adjusting your high and low speed?
high and low speed does not affect fuel mixtures
Great video! Your truck is looking good too.
Matthew G Thanks Matthew! I hope folks are getting some good out of these videos.
Matthew G If I'm not careful with my camera placement, you can see the minivan too. It's almost as cool as the truck :)
Rocking But Steady Well now I know how to jet my dream bike.. just in case.
I new to this so, what does the carburetor do, why should you jet it, and why should you make it richer or leaner?
It provides fuel to your motorcycle so it can run,you jet it so it goes faster or so it works properly, the other I can't explain exactly
What about the pilot jet? You can't access that without taking the float bowl off. If you're changing mains you probably need to change pilot too.
+Billy Shears Wrong. On the KTMs (and many other bikes) you can change the pilot from the drain plug :) I've done it many times.
Good tutorial. Thanks a lot!
so educating, thanks a bunch...
But how did you know which jet and needle/needle position to use? Are there charts or something?
awesome tutorial man
tmac9938 Glad you got something out of it!
Main-380
Needle jet-45
Needle-6beg20-68 3rd from top
Air screw-2-1/2
awesome video man, appreciate it!
Good instructional video what cylinder head is that on your bike? Looks nice wel the whole bike looks nice in that case
Do you need to mess around with the carb when changing exhausts ?? My cr125 01 keeps loosing spark due to getting covered with oil.
Great video mate.
ThatKidCookies Thanks man.
great video thanks so much
What a prediction...3 years ago we didn't have fuel injection
thanx good video
awesome tip @ 11:00
+shabsZA true ahahahah i fell kinda dumb now
Great video!
thank you, this video helped a lot!
Glad to help.
How do you know when you need a different needle and jets and how do you know what size to use when??
When you pulling the needle and throttle cable out of the carburator at 6:50. What is creating that resistance and pushing the needle and lever back inside the carburator? I'm worry to pull the needle up? Even needle and slider are moving easily, I feel like I will pull too much on the spring. Do I have to release or pull anything to get the needle out of carb body?
hi all, how to remove slide stopper from ktm 300 exc 2013 carburetor
Hahahaha suppressed 300 on the dog that made my day
:)
When you shut off the gas can't you just drain the carb to get all the gas out of the float bowl?
I havent messed with jetting on my bike since ive gotten it. Right now its running amazing. Idk if jetting would make any difference or not
Its starting to warm up now and elevation where i live is about 900 feet. So whats type of jet would you recommend for 900 feet elevation and about 50-70 degree weather?
My spark plug has a caramel color in the center where the probe is and it a little dark on the outsides, sometimes is wet with oil on the outside but isnt bad
I can even give you a kiss right now. Thanks a lot.
