That was a great movie. I remember seeing it when it first came out on VHS. Apparently it flopped in theaters because it was released at the same time as a few other blockbusters that kinda knocked it out the box but it was good nonetheless.
Great movie, hell how can You not love a movie with Dennis Hopper as the bad dude....

I remember watching it and thinking throughout the whole thing "why is this movie hated? I don't get it."
The gills were over the top but everything else was good.
Kevin Costner has to be one of the best of all time. I love his work and style. His voice is iconic as Tom Selleck or Sam Elliott. Since the first time I saw Bull Durham and Dances, that one watched at least 100 times each, I love that he’s a human and willing to show his real personality and heart . Kevin Costner, this guy made me fall in love with Westerns as a teenager, and that was after Hollywood said that Westerns were dead.. then Costner picked up the torch so to speak and he has done an absolutely amazing job of it. Bravo, Sir!
The westerns died off because they made so many of them & most of them were inevitably awful. It’s the exact same thing that happened to disco.
The first western I ever saw was Silverado and man what a great cast in that movie
Two manly men, living out their callings in life with integrity, and discussing life. This is much more than an interview about a movie. I'm so please to learn that Costner isn't stuck on himself, but driven by the calling to be a storyteller, and can both collaborate and follow his own inner voice. Also love that he tells stories of how he, a big time star, didn't get the part, didn't get to direct, or wasn't able to get the rights to a movie. Humble and confident at the same time. Strong role modeling.
Open Range is a must see movie....
Indeed! As are a number of Costner's films. And it's amazing how often he has to buck the system to make them his way. Tells you just how screwed up Hollywood is.

@@thisisironcladThere's a side to this aspect that most people don't know. My family were some of the first settlers in Dakota Territory and I was born and raised in Rapid City. I remember going to see the release of Dances with Wolves in the local theater in high school with my friend Steve, who's mother was Lakota and lost her language at a boarding school. Steve's dad was of German heritage and was born and raised in South Dakota on a farm near the border of his mom's reservation. He learned to speak fluent Lakota, so the was some irony and a good match.
His parents had moved to Rapid City, on the edge of the Black Hills, as my grandparents had, decades earlier, in 1905, from their farming community in Elk Pointe, which was East River. (the Missouri, which really marks the difference in the landscape, as the elevation begins to rise as you head West and more ranches than farms and you pass the Badlands (and Wall Drug lol) towards Rapid City and the Black Hills.)
Steve and I were gen x kids with parents born in the 20s. It's a strange thing to experience. But the history is closer and it's important to the context of my point. In public school, they never taught us about the Indian Education Act or the fact that the KKK was prevalent in our hometown.
My grandfather started out as a teacher in Rapid City in 1905 and eventually worked his way up to Superintendent. In 1928, the School Board was full of klan members and they told my grandpa to fire all the Catholic teachers. He refused because he has morals in addition to a wife and 10 kids. My mom was a year old and it was the beginning of the Great Depression.
They pressured my grandpa, but he said no so they fired him. They lost their house owing $500 and lived outside and in places with dirt floors.
Note: "churches and communities" can't help in times like that. 💡
They all did whatever work they could find. The WPA was a good thing and provided a lot of manual labor jobs building infrastructure that is still important today. My grandpa helped build Canyon Lake (in Rapid City) and my uncle went down to Colorado and worked on building more railroad in the Rockies and met his wife there. He told me the first time he saw her she was on a horse with a revolver in her holster. Most teenagers in the 1980s didn't hear their uncles telling them things like that.
My dad and 6 or 7 uncles from both sides served in WWII on both fronts and during reconstruction. My friend Steve's dad went to Omaha Beach and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. My uncle Dave was in the Navy in the Pacific and was on the ship when the Emperor of Japan surrendered.
None of them talked about the war. Some of them were severely damaged by it, including both of our dads.
Anyway, it was the first time we'd been to a movie with the majority of the audience being Indian. It was pretty somber as we left.
In college, I studied Dakota language and went to a native language symposium in Mankato, MN. I met Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman there. He gave a talk to a small room of us and talked about having a "White people museum with Nike shoes and Coca Cola. They could call it the Museum of Unnatural History" 😂 He was really nice and good humored. He was in Costner's movie, but started out as a folk singer in the 60s, with hits like "Custer Died for Your Sins".
Speaking of the Battle of The Little Bighorn, my uncle Bill Groethe was into photography before the war and a recon photographer in WWII, and knew Black Elk's son as well. He was the only non-indian invited to the last Reunion of the Survivors of (they told me "Custer's Last Stand" in the public schools in the 70s). He took portraits of them which are in the Smithsonian, along with his pictures of the building of Mt Rushmore.
In fact, if you fly into Rapid City Regional Airport, you'll see a display of the two sets of pictures next to each other. It's a nice display.
So, speaking of the RC Airport, and now I'll make the point, Costner had bought Casinos in Deadwood after his Dances flick. Legalized gambling was back and, with Mt Rushmore, the No 1 industry was tourism (after the largest gold mine - the Homestake - in the hemisphere had been cleaned out and strip mining those hills with cyanide solution that killed every living thing in the soil and collected in pools that were uncovered...), Costner was a Deadwood guy with some real financial investments.
He led an attempt to build a rail line that went directly from the RC Airport to Deadwood, skipping the entire economy of Rapid City and all the small towns and businesses in the Hills, not to mention Mt. Rushmore.
Luckily it failed. I mean, I know what it's like to grow up in a small city where three families own the vast majority of real estate, business, and natural resources, but even Costner fame money couldn't make it happen.
I think his focus started moving to Montana after that. He plays roles that aren't necessarily like his real character there too.
He does tell a good story and is talented. I think he said it in this interview, though. Something about the West being a place where you had to just go and take what you wanted.

This is probably one of the best interviews of a filmmaker that I’ve ever seen. The ease at which Kevin Costner expresses himself only comes about from the insightful questions that Andy poses. There are no starry eyed, fan boy type questions but a genuine curiosity at the process of filmmaking. There is also a level of mutual respect between the interviewer and the interviewee. Both recognizing and affirming they come from different spheres but acknowledging similar life lessons through their different experiences. Always been a big fan of Kevin Costner’s movies and was gutted to hear he wouldn’t be coming back for the next season of Yellowstone, but Horizon looks to more than make up for that. Kevin Costner will eventually go down as one of Americas greatest storytellers and for some reason he reminds me of Tom Petty, one of, if not the best, songwriters.

Kevin is one of my favorite actors/directors of all time. I definitely support his work he has revived my love for Westerns. He is the best at it.
Open Range is my favorite. I am a woman who has loved Westerns since I was a teenager.
It's also my favorite.
We could have been close friends.
One of my favorites is the Oxbow Incident. That was a powerful movie, overall. Not necessarily as a Western even though it is a Western. As powerful as "12 angry men", another favorite.
These are the kind of movie's that have to continue to remind us where we came from.. lessons in history must continue. This movie is a great example.
The Postman is still one of my favorites of Kevin’s work.

@@thisisironclad Perhaps you can produce a video of what it really means to live by the words "That Others May Live" I got to know some really great men when I was active duty and I have been a volunteer in SAR as a civi. Since my early adult years I have adopted that saying as my own. I hope I can live it more deeply in the next few years. I don't think I will see more that another 10 years before what I knew America was and has been corrupted to be.

Great movie! Not many movies that highlight coasties like that, and they really did a great job of portraying how badass rescue swimmers truly are. I don’t understand how they can even swim with such an enormous set of balls weighing them down, but they pull it off!

He was in my home town several months back, had lunch at the prairie house after a morning of quail hunting. I haven’t been to a movie in a theater in a long time. Because well they don’t make good movies anymore. But in this case, I’m going Tuesday with my girlfriend and my oldest son.

Holy shit, from 37:47 on my heart was shirking with every answer. I get it, nobody is perfect but there's something about him that is comforting and very real.

Totally correct about Dances With Wolves. Saw that movie a lot growing up, but when I revisited it later in life, especially after my military career with multiple deployments, it really did take a whole new meaning and profoundness that I never expected before. Also, Open Range is quite possibly not only my favorite Western, but favorite movie of all time. That sense of "we need to stand up against these bullies and do the right thing, no matter what happens" has really stuck with me.

Have watched many of Andy's interviews. Real, honest fair, blunt, one of the best. Love the stories, and the different types of interviews. I am a coasties' kid, had lost my dad and was looking for Coast Guard stories, and found Andy's podcasts. Need to have some of the "puddlejumpers" stories from Vietnam and different areas the USCG have been. So looking forward to this podcast and future one. When are you doing the long motorcycle run? For this dubious distinction, their good deeds are punished with a gauntlet they must overcome, and they will likely not bask in fame during their lifetime. That is the true tale of the Hero’s Journey.

Great conversation w/ Kevin Costner, who also has made some memorable baseball movies. One Great American Hero who was also a Great Baseball player and Hall of Famer was Yogi Berra. Many also remember him for his innumerable puzzling quips. But how many know that he was there in Normandy on D-DAY.

But most of all, I respect you because you love your children more than you love yourself! You have raised them right, just like you were raised right! Although my reason for going alone is sort crazy, it is what I want, unless of course you come and take me with you? That’s a whole different story. We just got Dads army records after 77 years, he was special services, the MOD and SAS only just released his records, I wish I could let you see his records, Dad escaped POW camps 3 times and. bought fellow soldiers home to England, get them to Mildenhall American air base so they could get home to America and Canada

I was stationed in Okinawa for six years..USMC. I did all the battle sights tours I could for the Pacific theatre. Gives the HBO miniseries the Pacific context. That and being a marine how much it has been drummed into our entire physical being
That was amazing to see him being so candid. I've grown up watching his movies like Dances With Wolves and I've admired him and his work for so long it's great getting a glimpse of how he thinks as well as some personal life notes. The fact that his kids said what they did about him investing that money into the movie rather than saving it for them says everything I need to know about how he's raised them and the kind of people they are: good people who value each other over mere material. Needless to say, I can't wait to go see this film, or series of films, in the theater. I've been excited since I saw the first preview, but now I'm even more interested.
Also, this change agents series on IRONCLAD is awesome and I can't wait to see more!

KC is not the interviewer! He’s was asked questions about the movie and he answers those questions and discusses those questions from a point of what he was thinking! Where he was coming from. He’s answering them the same as if anyone else, was asking them.
Pretty sure he had some deep discussions with his brother before he passed away .
Meaning, he knows exactly, what all these men have personally sacrificed. and how tuff they had to be, their personal experiences that changed them forever regardless of what unit of team you were on

His brother who died from the devastating, excruciating, and deadly results of the war he was in! .
Pretty sure Kevin Costner had to. watch his brother suffer and battle many health issues from the time he cane home till his death!

Definitely had the same thoughts of Dances With Wolves, the solitude was great healing for myself. What a great interview, Hollywood doesn't deserve Kevin Costner.
I can answer the very last question asked Mr. Costner. If we as a "Civilized Nation" understand our REAL and HONEST History, if we know who we are and were we have come from, we will know ourself and where we are going in Life. This is why those who are awake today and know there is a lot wrong with how our nation has fallen and corrupted want to see Honest and truthful portraits of how we lived and how we should still be living. Just a thought.

I've talked to a lot of Americans over the years who say they are awake yet have no clue or concept of what America really is or stands for. I felt this video was a good place to share what part of my core values are based on. I am not the most educated on America's history but what I know and continue to learn deepens my strength and beliefs.

One anecdote has Franklin speaking to the delegates to the Constitutional Convention in the hellish summer of 1787: ". . . we shall be divided by our little, partial, local interests, our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a reproach and a bye-word down to future ages. And, what is worse, mankind may hereafter, from this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing a government by human wisdom, and leave it to chance, war and conquest."
I watched Horizon alone, too, the day before it was scheduled for release. Then, a few days later, I took 2 of my sisters to see it with me. There is so much action stuffed into the 1st chapter, it's bery beneficial to see it again.We all loved it, & are looking forward to Chapter 2.

I loved that movie - the interplay between Morgan Freeman and Kevin. What I didn't expect was that Alan Rickman would steal the scene in the tower away from Kevin. Great talent! Alan is sorely missed. Wonderful that we have Kevin, and can watch him grow.
This guy is so lucky to meet such a celebrity. I could tell Costner was in awe of Andy.

Mr. Costner produced the most amazing Native American dance performance years ago I wish hed do another one. I never got to see it live but caught half of it on PBS. It never really got much publicity but if you caught it, youd never forget it. It was life changing, beautiful; showing amazing physical strength with great music and give anything to see a whole show live. Man produces great stuff. Thank you Kevin.
This was a great interview. But the best part for me was @ 45:26 when Mr. Costner describes reaching the audience through a moment of resonance that imprints itself into our memory. In this way he’s bringing back movie magic. Great work and video! ❤

This was awesome! I saw Kevin Cosner down at Rincon a few times when I would go surfing at Rincon point.
He had his house right at the take off there. Ive always loved his movies, and acting. This gave me a window into who he is. Great questions.
