The original comic isn't really dark, it just has a more grounded sense of humor and tone. The film is actually much darker despite having more comedy, the death scenes in it are far more brutal and graphic than anything in the comic. That "swamp gas from a weather balloon" explanation that K gives to a UFO witness is taken directly from the comic itself so it does have its funny and goofy moments.
