Watching Seiji Ozawa's expressiveness and hands -- sans baton -- as he leads this marvelous youthful ensemble playing Beethoven's pure, stately and emotive piece leads me to this question: Why is there not a standard for conductors to be positioned facing not only their orchestra, but the audience as well? Were I a member of the live audience, I would not wish to be be deprived of the intimate visual of master Ozawa's face as we see here in this video. I watched with tears welling in my eyes and a wistful smile upon my lips. Bless Seiji Ozawa's soul in heaven.
We mortals are unfit to comment on this tonal miracle. We're just fortunate to have ears.... Beethoven had lost his ears 20 years before this was composed, not to mention that he was dying from cirrhosis. For this old boy, THIS is the Pinnacle of Western music. Beautiful old Seiji.....and not one player older than 30 ! Bravissimo, I say !
... no he visto nada mas tierno. Es un pequeño viaje
Hello, I always admire the originality of the execution respecting the idea of the composer and the intention of the conductor, in this case the orchestra was sublime, enchanting, the nuances very well explained, the dynamics that is the soul of the work always very well noticed and much more Led by the master Ozawa who in the bag carries the guidance of the greatest regent of all time "karajan, so the orchestra is in good hands.Congratulations on the excellent work done.
Its good, and certainly Ozawas influence on the interpretation is good, but I still prefer to hear the tone and interplay of the individual instruments personally.

'extremely slow, quietly sung' ... the enigmas of a journey's end, for Beethoven, Ozawa, and those who listen.

"not one player older than 30". Not exactly. I think I see Nabuko Imai there.

Magnífico! Salve maestro Seiji Ozawa>
I would like to add that it appears that Seiji Ozawa seems live, to float with / on the music.
Is there a source to purchase this recording (digital download or music CD) ? I love this performance so much, deeply moved.
Thank you thank you
C'est très émouvante. Eine sehr ergreifende Musik! Herzlichen Dank!!!

Delicioso.
I can't belive that none of the players fall asleep for such a slow and quiet music.
Cuistre!
Your soul is many times uglier than theirs
Absolutely brilliant. Speaking to the bottom of my heart.
