CAMBRIDGE PHYSICS: movies vs reality 🔭🌌

  • In which I sip tea and try to convince you that physicists at Cambridge are not really as socially awkward as we're often portrayed in movies like 'The Theory of Everything' (while being awkward myself). So what is studying Natural Sciences really like?
This is one of my two videos about the Natural Sciences course at Cambridge, as there will be another coming out next week. In that, I will review my experience learning Natural Sciences as a course in depth: the structure, how difficult it is, employability, and whether I think it is worth it. Please subscribe for next week's video!
More detailed information about the Natural Sciences course at Cambridge can be found on the website at this link:
    www.undergraduate.study.cam.a...
Please leave a comment if you have any questions that you would like clarified, or if you have any suggestions or requests for another video e.g. explaining the Natural Sciences course in more detail! Alternatively you can find me on instagram @naproud and message me there :)
By the way, I thought I would clarify that the Natural Sciences course is often shortened to 'NatSci' (pronounced nat-ski, which you might hear me using interchangeably in this video). 'Phys NatSci' is what we use to call people who study physical natural sciences.
CIips from the movie (The Theory of Everything, 2014), are from here:

I agree with a lot of this. But I was an engineering student some years ago. In my case, the difficulty of the course made me slightly moody because there was constant stress/pressure of failure, and also massive competition between students. Yes we did study together but there was still this rivalry. In the end you could never truly lean on someone else, because at the exam it was all up to you to make it.
When I look back at those years it chocks me what stress/pressure can do to your ability to socialise, I just never felt like it. What was the point to be in a good mood if you failed your exam and would be thrown out? My tip to young people today though is, try to get out no matter how stressed you are, or it will kind of haunt you later on. I regret my degree, this is my opinion.

the 2 main characters were, aptly enough, from oxbridge. Eddy Redmayne did History at Trinity while Felicity Jones read English at Wadham, Oxford.

I love this movie but I always did wonder about how realistically it portrayed Cambridge to us mere mortals....I guess now I know lol. also side note your hair matching Jane's was super clever and you looked super cute 😂

Hi, I'm interested in doing Maths and Chemistry at University which is why I want to do NatSci, firstly because it's more flexible and I'm not entirely sure what I what I want to do yet, but also because it's one of the only courses at Oxbridge that will allow me to do both those subjects. Do you think that NatSci is much more work than if I did one of those subjects on its own? And do you think that it's flexible enough that I would be able to spend most of my time doing those two subjects? Obviously I know that I will probably be doing a lot of other sciences too but I was wondering what you thought. Thanks in advance if you take the time to read my comment!

Hi Sophie! Thanks for your comment! Since in 2nd and 3rd year you can choose to specialise (e.g. choose Maths, Chem A and Chem B in 2nd year, and just Chemistry in 3rd year), I suppose this is really most relevant to 1st year.
I think in terms of the amount of work set, NatSci is probably not thattt different from just Math or just Chem. However, some people find 'switching mode' between subjects difficult, for example having to write essays in biology and then doing math questions. Personally I found this quite tiring.
In 1st year, it makes a lot of sense to prioritise + spend more time on certain subjects which you'll continue with in following years. I think most people do this. You do still have to take 4 subjects, though, and pass all of them so your other two subjects will take up SOME time e.g. I didn't have any plans to continue with Earth Sciences but spent ages on it!
Overall, I would say that the strongest reason for choosing NatSci is if you do want flexibility and might change your mind later (or if you specifically want to study at Chemistry at Cambridge rather than Oxford ;)). If you decide you do have a clear preference, I think it would be better NOT to take NatSci, since you would have to study some 'extra' subjects in 1st year which wouldn't contribute to your overall goals + also take up time. This answer was super long, but hope it was helpful!

I'd like to study physical NatSci at Cambridge but my a levels are Maths, Further Maths, Physics... and History. Does that put me at a big disadvantage (because I'm not doing chemistry)?

I would say it may make your subject options for 1st year limited (ie it would be difficult for you to take chemistry in 1st year) but I don’t think it would put you at a disadvantage in the application process!

hii, i want to ask something i want to further my degree in geology but im not quiet good with science like bio and chem, its not that bad but its just okay..so i plan to change my plan to software engineering but im not so familiar with those kind of things so im a lil afraid to choose that..in your pov what do you think

hi! not sure if you’re referring to a bachelors/masters degree but I would suggest doing some research into the courses that you would take (what you’d actually learn) and what kind of job opportunities would be open to you for each option :)

Frank Martin DiMeglio has proven the fourth dimension. TIME is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual ON/IN BALANCE, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is CLEARLY AND NECESSARILY proven to be gravity (ON/IN BALANCE).
