Parent Study Guide: Black Marker Ate a Rainbow!
Objective: Teach children about paper chromatography and how it can be used to separate the colors found in a black marker.
Supplies Needed:
Black washable marker
1 white coffee filter
Scissors
1/4 C white vinegar
Small cup or container
Tape
Instructions:
Prepare the Paper:
Cut a 3 in x 2 in strip from the white coffee filter.
Draw a line with the black marker about 1 inch from the bottom of the strip.
Set Up the Chromatography:
Tape the strip of the filter to the top of the cup. The bottom of the strip should almost touch the bottom of the cup.
Pour a small amount of vinegar into the cup (just enough to touch the bottom of the paper strip, but not the black line).
Start the Experiment:
Place the bottom of the paper strip in the vinegar and let it sit. Make sure the black line is above the vinegar level.
Watch as the vinegar travels up the paper, carrying the ink with it. The colors in the black ink will start to separate and reveal the hidden rainbow.
Observe and Discuss:
Once the vinegar has traveled up the paper and the colors have separated, remove the strip from the cup and let it dry.
Discuss with your child what they observe. Explain that the different colors travel at different speeds, which is why they separate and form a rainbow.
Scientific Explanation:
Reflection of Light: Colors are what we see when light bounces off an object back to our eyes. Different wavelengths of light correspond to different colors.
Chromatography: This technique is used to separate mixtures. In this experiment, the water dissolves the ink and carries it up the paper. Different pigments in the ink move at different speeds, causing them to separate and reveal various colors.
