This wouldn't exist if not for CheesecakeMilitia. The story goes that we originally planned to do this as a teamwork MPC, but school got in the way and he was unable to work, so I no-lifed this while bored in the summer before moving to college. Cheesecake also made that watermark there in the bottom. Yes, I know the watermark is a little childish. When I was making the files for this, I wrote that because I thought it was a super hilarious pun and then cheesecake thought it was funny too. We were 17 when I made this, so I think this is forgivable.
This took about a week to make, in total. 153 text files!
Second thank you goes to Mario7Mario3 for being a consistently good recorder. He is great and I love him.
And lastly Lob31 for making the soundfont, with the following modifications:
Flowers become low gameboys
Cats become high gameboys
Pigs become low planes
Faces become high planes
Piranhas become high cars
Thank you so much you three!
Also Rehdblob. His file splitter program saved me from exhaustion. and he tried to record. He's great too.
2024 update since this has been getting a lot of attention lately:
CheesecakeMilitia is still the man, we've now met IRL a few times and we're still very good friends. Thank you for continuing to watch this video over a decade later.

I'd still say this is about the best thing I've found on UA-cam. Ever. Octavarium was my first Dream Theater album, and though it took me some time to warm up to it, once I listened to the album I knew it was something really special. This song is still one of my favorites by Dream Theater, and this arrangement is very carefully made and has incredible attention to detail. To think one person made this by himself... It would have taken me much more than a week. You win. Everything.

The amount of work this seems like it's taken is impressive. Quality work, excellent transcription as well. I've found a lot of transcriptions of DT stuff tend to be sloppy, bad time signatures, obvious wrong notes, etc. There was none of that here. High quality stuff.

Favorited, actually... just the effort and time spent on this, the note accuracy especially in the middle instrumental sections, and the intro and outro, just simply incredible. Easily one of the best MPC pieces I've EVER seen.

At first I was starting to wonder when it would pick up. Then I actually looked at how long the video is. Have to say you did excellent work.
This is a brilliant cover of the song; a great breath of new life into the original, and its ultimately fascinating I find how well music can stand the test of time; and I'm younger than the original album!

Here's my less whorish comment that I develop as the video goes on. First of all, Jamie I love you man and I'm so thankful you didn't let Operation 8VA die. Also, you may not be the most talented MPCer, but you are definitely one of the most dedicated. I know that's an on and off trait, but look, in a month, you've produced 5 different songs totaling to nearly an hours worth of MPC goodness. For some reason I really love the part at 18:28. You also made Intervals fucking amazing.
