The Apostle Paul was a clear example of one who was converted from the teaching of the Pharisees. to a believer in Christ yes there were some were converted.

Great question, the people knew that He was to come but was confused as to Him living in Nazareth, they though He would be born a glorious powerful birth like kings, His birth confused a lot of people, and His death (the cross) messed many up and it became a stumbling block.
