I lived in Telford from 1977-1985 and my parents still do, though these days they try to spend as much time as they can at their caravan at Borth, getting there on the train as my Dad gave up driving years ago!
The old Coalport West branch actually followed the path you were walking along rather than the A442, though at that point, they are rather close together. I used to ride my bike along part of it on Sundays in the early eighties. My old European Studies teacher, a lovely old chap called Mr Turnock who was as deaf as a post, told us how he first commuted to our school, originally Madeley Modern but by my time the Abraham Darby., from Wellington along the Coalport branch, as far as Madeley Market station, saying it was a "very friendly line!" At that time, a colleague of his was an apparently fearsome art teacher by the name of....Mrs Mary Whitehouse!
The bay platform at Welington was last regularly used by the Walsall-Wellington service that took over the stopping service for a while before the direct Walsall-Wolverhampton service ceased on the instructions of Strategic Railway Authority Head Richard Bowker, though of course, this should be reinstated soon...but not running through to Wellington!
In earlier times, Wellinton was also terminus to an LNWR/LMS (who also ran the Coalport branch) line to Stafford and GWR branches to Craven Arms & Crewe.

Wellington used to have sheds and a yard back in the day for locos to rest between duties. Telford was born back in the day for extra housing/over spill for people who were living in Birmingham. Telford's history is fascinating when you look into it especially the Railways going into Ironbridge/coalport Dale for example. All this time living in Telford never knew Oakengates has an old signal box. Lol. I enjoyed watching.

Jen's vlogs are some of the best rail ones. Won't criticise other vloggers individually but Jen's are very informative without being dull or dry.

Not the only place to have done it. East Grinstead replaced a railway with an underpass funnily enough called Beeching Way, it feels really out of place in the town and cuts it in half. Locals literally call the road 'the cut'. The line that used to exist linked the town with Crawley and I think Tunbridge Wells, it would likely be well used today had it survived as the roads are very busy on the route.

Beeching also used to live in East Grinstead. (In henfield, also in Sussex, there is a road called “the Beechings” where the old railway station used to be!)

Great video, Jen. I’ve always found Telford the most odd of the new towns (and that’s saying something!) from memory, it doesn’t have its own town centre, just a huge shopping centre and all the paths are like the one you walked on!

I have been to Telford before and it reminds me bit like Basildon in Essex. My Grandad grew up in Shropshire and lived near Telford when it was first built.

something about some of those stations is very appealing. I think neat and harmonious paint color goes a long way at making a station feel like part of a community instead of something that was just plunked there to do a job. I think the brown and cream color scheme is tidy and welcoming. Doesn't take much to make things look cared for. Shifnal was a surprise after the basic appearance of the station.

Nice vlog of finishing off the stations on the Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury line Jen. I’ve visited all these stations last year and also been to Telford navy times and I must say the more historic areas outside of Telford Town do look nicer.

Hi From New Zealand. I had a look at Shifnal on the NLS Side by Side Maps, using the OS 25 Inch 1892-1914 set of maps, and there was a yard where said the station has a larger footprint. There were three goods waggon turntables in there. Maybe a Coalyard? There was also a siding on the opposite side of the station where the arches are as well. :)

Since you ask about non stop trains… There is one train a week on a Sunday evening that skips Wellington and Telford Central. It comes from Holyhead/Chester and departs Shrewsbury 21:20, there is a return from Birmingham International. Pretty sure that service used to run via Stafford so it’s a new ish thing.

When you walked up the hill towards the roundabout leading towards Oakengates, you were actually on the old Coalport branch that crossed the road ahead and the line crossed the existing Shrewsbury route that was in the tunnel below. The route of the line can be clearly seen on your left if you had followed the main road into Oakengates. The line crossed that road on a bridge (gone) and ran under a road (part of the bridge still there) and into its own station in Oakengates. The main road crosses the road to St George's on a bridge and it is there that the old Coalport line crossed the same road on the level.

Platform 3 at Wellington was restored around 20 years ago. At that time there was an experimental Walsall- Wolverhampton direct service! It wasn’t successful. They attempted to improve it by extending it to Wellington stopping at all stations. That didn’t work either and the service eventually finished! I believe in 2008. I guess the centre roads at Wellington are for freight!

Agreed, effort has been made to blend a lot of the old individual centres into the modern whole that is Telford - amused to note that this is one of the few series where it made sense to tick the stations off in line order - well spotted, that siding at Wellington was where the WM all stations service used to turn back.
All-in-all, loads of tasty treats and curious corners - thank you so much \m/

Telford New Town was started in 1963. There were a number of railway lines still extant at that time and, according to my Telford Development Corporation book, it would appear that no line was considered to be part of the venture other than the existing Wolverhampton - Shrewsbury route. The TDC were fully aware of their plans back then and also the planned railway closures in the area. One of the most obvious and stupid decisions was to allow the closure of the Stafford - Wellington - Shrewsbury line. The TDC were well aware at that juncture that places on that route would double, triple and quadruple in size, yet no moves were taken to persuade BR to keep the line open. As has been proven since, stations on that line such as Newport, Donnington, Hadley, Wellington and its environs have increased massively in size. There were other lines also allowed to close whilst Telford "Central" was in plan - a station about as "central" to Telford Centre as Hadley is to Wellington. No doubt there were and still are plans to put forward Telford as a "City". It would become the only City I can think of without a direct and interval rail service to London. For me, both the TDC and BR lost out on what would not only be a useful connection to the WCML but also a highly profitable one.

Gotta force people into cars so road builders, car manufacturers, insurers, repair establishments, all kinds of car-related industries _and_ the government can make tons of money while forcing the working class to do all of the labour _and_ expenses to move from place to place! Typical capitalism moment.

Marples & Beeching must have hated the rail system, they destroyed hundreds of lines and stations in favour of roads. Those roads now are gridlocked to fk at peak times of the day and also riddled with mega pot holes. Great job !!!! Typical labour loonies.
