I have known of Leo for years but this is the first time I have seen him. He does a very non patronizing, professional job of making the point.

Scotty Kilmer is my go to guy for automotive & Leo is now my go to guy for Networking.
Both are very clear, no nonsense and straight to the point.
First time I've seen an "Ask Leo" video, although I've gotten his email newsletter for years. I've got to say that Leo is an incredibly good speaker --- very clean and interesting delivery.

Outbound firewall?
A lot of software and even operating systems don't always have a user's best interest as their primary objective. Generally I wouldn't recommend using that software, but many people don't have much of an option. It's challenging when your computer often comes with malware (software that runs on you computer that does things that you wouldn't otherwise want it to) preloaded and you aren't offered nor are aware of viable alternatives. An outbound firewall can also help protect your local network, not just the internet. Other than protection, it can also be a useful tool to see what is trying to connect and where to.

My home office is just 2 PC's plus printers, scanner, etc. I have been using the same hp Procurve switch that I bought
some 15+ years ago. Avast has been blocking a brute force attack but the many attacks per second can effectively
stop me from connecting Flamingo to Pelican (both windows 10 of course).
I suspect that my very old switch is also very dumb and is doing nothing to protect me.
Should I hook up a WatchGuard T20 Firebox between the AT&T ISP modem (WAN) to my hp switch (LAN)
or should i just get a new firewall switch (I need 9 ethernet ports).
If a new smart switch is best then what device would you recommend? Thanks! Daniel
Switches, almost by definition, do nothing firewall related. I'd be looking to your router for that.
Should one buy Netgate SG 1100 for home or a small business or rely on default firewall of an operating system.
I prefer a router of almost any sort.

I'm reluctant to specific specific models just because things keep changing. I just upgraded to a Ubiquity mesh network and am very happy with their router, but it's definitely higher end. You might research at sites like tomshardware.com or even consumerreports.org for current, specific, brands and models.
Yes - but don't get a firewall that is flashed/manufactured in China. Coreboot BIOS would be great for an edge device - who knows what backdoors are embedded during the supply chain.

Leo, it has been 3 years since you posted this video. Perhaps your position has changed, due to how much data collection companies perform.
Naomi Brockwell TV posted a video, 21 hours ago, demonstrating how much of our personal information is being sent to endless numbers of companies. Some of them even store your information on your own computer, if you are off-line, and will wait until you go back on-line to upload what they saved up about your activities.
She reviewed a Mac based software firewall, that notifies you of every network attempt made by some process, and you can approve or decline network access, or set a rule for each network access attempt.
I have never looked into this topic. But based on Naomi's video, there is a lot of information being sent out. So I am interested in whether or not your position has changed, and if perhaps you have a video for a Windows based firewall (or consider making a video)?
Naomi mentions GlassWire for Windows. It is subscription based. I do not like renting software, especially if after setting up firewall rules, the company goes belly-up, or raises their subscription price. Ending your subscription will render your firewall software inoperable.
Defender allows you to set rules. However, it is 1) complicated, and 2) I know of no way to have it alert you of a network attempt so that you can set up a rule.
I have learned that Avast is collecting and selling my data, so as far as I am concerned Avast is now malware.
I will be changing over to Bitdefender soon. Your thoughts Leo?
I don't have personal experience with Bitdefender, but it has a good rep.
Why ISP don’t have firewall ?
Many do, but they can't really make assumptions about what their customers need or want.
How do I stop a high level router firewall from blocking Xbox live?
You could try a VPN. but you may have performance issues, depending on the VPN. In general the answer really is "you can't". Unless, of course, you're the admin of the router.
Great video Leo. So you obviously don't want overseas hackers to get access to your network but it seems from your video that you are ok with local hackers to get access to your data...
