The Mississippi River is beautiful and more people should know and see it at least once in their life. I was born and raised in Batesville, Mississippi.
Born and raised on that River in New Orleans! We never lived more than 2-3 blocks away from it during my entire childhood! and I was a certified River Rat! Now I live in another State...but have to, periodically, return to that river and sit on the levee..taking in the sights, the sounds and even the smells!..It's like a rejuvenation of my lifeblood and being! Love that River!
My grandfather helped build that rock covered dam with the CCC back in 1935. My family and I visited the park just a couple of weeks after this segment aired. I have always loved Itasca State Park.
Nice, I spent a lot of time on the River around Alton and St. Charles. That's where I learned to swim and ski. Brings back good memories even though I lost two friends on it. Also worked the 93 flood as an electrical lineman. Great video,, THANX . Glad I stumbled accross this.
Michael Sever my father also worked on the dam in Quincy Illinois for the flood of 93.’ Love how this videos comment section can bring everyone together!
The Mississippi is so cute and friendly at the beginning. Big and bold at the ending in Louisiana. Maybe one day I will get a chance to travel to see the beginning of the Mississippi.
Kaskaskia (live just 20 minutes from) is an awesome place (where an Illinois town ended up on Missouri side) with a LOT of historical significance.. The oldest Church west of the Mississippi, the 2nd Liberty Bell, Lewis and Clark origins, and a the sad story of what could have been Americas largest city got swallowed in the watery grave, complete with an indian curse that could very well explain all the flooding. (Oh yes lots of indian history)
Yep, agreed. Right alongside it is "Old Glory" by Jonathan Raban. Eddy went down the river in a canoe while Jonathan did it in a small, outboard powered open boat. To complete my triple play on great, human interest stories based on the Mississippi River, comes "Up On The River" by John Madson. To read all three books will make anyone want to get out on that river....
As days of rain will fall, the rivers will rise! Good memories of growing up off the Mighty Mississippi River! Cruises on the Admiral, up & down the River were festive! Also Baptisms, were done there! I wish that I could have canoed, with Mr. Eddie Harris, up that River! Thanks Moe, for the awesome segment! 👍⭐👍
OMG....my uncle when he was 40, rode a horse around the perimeter of his home county in West Virginia...then he rode it around the entire states outline too. at 75 he rode his Harley around the perimeter of the United States.....but this guy, paddlin down the mighty missisip in a canoe?....completely off da hook!!!...im tellin ya...they still grow em big in America.
Im almost a little sad they didn’t mention that the 1927 flood inspired Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy to write “When the Levee Breaks.” Thanks to them, and the cover by Led Zeppelin, the song has become one of the most enduring representations of that flood. I’ll live with it, but it would have been nice to see that connection get some light.
Twain's "Life On The Mississippi" is THE book to learn about the Mississippi, pre and post the civil war...Twain was a boat pilot for 20 years on the river...It's an amazing book filled with amazing history of the river...
I’m a inland pushboat captain, and I couldn’t imagine paddling down this thing. I’d say from Cairo to Baton Rouge, wouldn’t be bad due to lack of fleets. But from Baton Rouge to New Orleans you are in the danger zone with fleets lining almost every bank around every bend. From Baton Rouge down you get into ship traffic. Im more upset the highest I’ve been is Vicksburg, would love to pilot every mile of the river and the rest of the inland waters, but for now I’ll settle for that.
Studied Mississippi in high school. Came to the US for college and get to live next to the mighty river. Mark Twain did wonder explaining the lives along the way
I used to work on the Mississippi Queen in the '90s. It's ashame they scrapped her. But hoping to relive my steamboating days on the Delta Queen. Would like to visit the upper river states
too thick to drink and too thin to plow.” Grew up on the Trinity River in Dallas- so when we moved to New Orleans I first understood what a RIVER it was. Mark Twain’s great autobiography “Life on the Mississippi” paints a memorable story of our country.
I recall when that boat came down and docked right beside us. That's are work boat in the background around 4:50. Spoke to him briefly. 363 LMR Natchez/Vidalia. We're a 180+ days over flood stage and counting.
Two of my classes in college which were 15 minutes apart and required walking across this river. As you can imagine, I probably looked like a degenerate Naruto running across the bridge, but that was culturally okay at the time. This was before the you know what. In any case, it was good exercise, especially for my peripheral version having to dodge all those bikers who seemed to come out of nowhere.
I want to take this trip, has anyone ever done a road trip paralleling the Mississippi from MN down to the Gulf? Curious about it if you did, would love to plan something like that for next year.
I was watching CNN when Amy Klobuchar announced that she was running for President. She mentioned that as a kid she had gone to the head waters and had jumped the river. Sounded like fun thing to do.
Terrific presentation. I’m glad you Discussed the slavery. The long shadow of slavery‘s brutality will forever bring shame to the grandeur of the wealthy slaveholders and their grand mansions.
I traveled down the great Mississippi on a paddle boat when I was five, I'm now 60, and it's a fond memory.
At 17, graduated high school, paddled my canoe from headwaters to st. Louis. The greatest memory of my life.
CBS Sunday morning at its best, no politics, no covid fear mongering
I live in S. La and never imagined the mighty Mississippi could be as beautiful as it is at its beginning!
I live for these CBS Sunday Morning segments. They're absolute gems of journalistic television.
thewaywardpoet aren’t they? That’s all too rare these days!🙂

Me too!! Love it when they have outdoor shows!
I've lived near the MS River my entire life. It's NOTHING to mess with and this man is very lucky to have made it down twice.
In a canoe
Walked the headwaters as a child, went to university near it, loved it then. Love it still. Truly a mighty force.
Born in Greenville, Mississippi. Love watching stories about he Mighty Mississippi. Thank u really enjoyed.
Me too. Ain’t nobody like a Delta body.

I agree, it deserves respect also. I've never been east of the Mississippi but one of my most favorite places to be

Watching this from my home in Memphis Tennessee! River City!

Wow, the river starts small than eventually gets bigger during it's journey. Kind of like chasing your dreams in life. Incredible ✨🙏

The Miss river is absolutely breathtaking.

Paul Schneider’s book, “Old Man River,” is one of the best books about the river ever written. Highly recommended.
