People in California said that this would never happen will its happing now, California started by taking my trucking business now its your turn to lose your RV and your toys, thank god for Texas 😅
There is a easy Fix. The law says you must sell 11% electric vehicles over 8,600 pounds GVWR. So if Newmar buys 11 of the Rivian built Amazon vans, then sells those to Amazon, they can then sell 89 of the motorhomes and still meet their regulations. Amazon is buying well over 110 of the electric vans, so that is good enough for 890 RV sales.
RV life, I like your travel information and staying with the grand children is awesome. Going to get interesting in California with RV Ban. I am sure glad I own a Truck and travel trailer. Although I can see the convenience of a motorhome. We have a off grid property here in the Cascades of California.
Only 7500 miles to be used? Buy it in Seattle?, get a 30 day tag for it, and make a blitz tour, or hire a driver, to zip to Newfoundland, Key West, and back to Cali all on the temp tag. Now you are registering a used vehicle, just what Cali wants.
Biodiesel would solve most complaints about diesels. Extremely clean burning and non-toxic if spilled. Why were we able to use it 15 years ago, but its not available to buy here in cali today? That makes no sense.
It is important to emphasize that California is not banning RVs or other medium- or heavy-duty vehicles. Instead, it is requiring the chassis manufacturers to meet certain emissions standards as a way of encouraging them to develop ZEV options.
They decided to take a restricted toll road reserved for high occupancy commuters in rush hour, but now complains about the cost. I live in the DC Metro area, and all locals who drive know about this road, as did they. They made a choice that they didn't have to make.
Hmm.. with R99 diesel fuel sold in a lot of places, that means diesels are the Only renewable vehicles or close to it. Why not expand that fuel network instead?
A van average weight is 5,664lbs. The conversion weight average 2,606lbs. The cargo weight average 1,174lbs. That's an average total of 9,444lbs. A lot of people have gone to embrace van life because they cannot afford living in a home. This law is ridiculous law.
i'm a colorado rv'er, class A Southwind gas job. if the overall rv industry in cali goes batty soon, can I expect buy a diesel rv upgrade at a substantial discount bargain?
When I was a kid growing up in LA, you could not even see the mountains at all because of how bad the smog was not to mention how bad my lungs hurt running around. They really turned the quality of life around here with gas regulations for millions of kids compared to what it was and is a much healthier environment.
California is nuts! Until now all the manufacturers have been working very hard to figure out how to make all of their products CA-compliant. I think it is awesome that they are finally saying, "We are going to keep doing what we're doing, and we will just cut California out." The average RV only drives a few miles every year anyway. Ridiculous!
So a used rv with 7500 miles can get registered. a new rv with < 7500 miles will have to be compliant meaning? Go thru the carb process ie 30$ and OBD check? or not being able to register at all?
if the RV has 7500 miles or less it is considered NEW and cannot be registered. If the RV has 7501 or more miles, it is declared USED and can be registered, at the moment.
On 11/19/2024, RVIA staffers and CARB met to discuss a possible exemption or delay to the RV segment of these regulations. Previously, CARB had taken the position that they were following written law and no exemption could be allowed by CARB. They have now reversed that position and admitted they have the power to create exemptions. RVIA issued a statement that they are fairly confident they can delay or reach a full exemption. Another meeting is scheduled for early December and ongoing negotiations continue until then. I should note that the State of California exempted its own fleet of vehicles, such as CalTrans and prison buses, and other large state-owned vehicles that would fall under the same regulations.
They already overcharge for regular vehicles so they can go without the commercial tax on hood heavy duty trucks, it should not cause a problem for the big manufacturers, because they will be selling they outstanding vehicles in free states
So towables are exempt? The average RV is probably only used 3-4K miles per year and a Hugh percentage of this miles are likely not driven in California! Don’t see what this gains? This will kill much tax revenue for the state which is in a financial hole! What if you buy a motorhomes elsewhere and bring it into California? Can you register it there? What if you move to California and you already have a motorhome? Can you register it there?
A great opportunity for RV rental companies to sell off units after 7500 miles. Maybe new business opportunity for Newmar to rent. Then, they can actually deliver fully tested products.
People don’t get they’re ‘herding’ us into boxes in the cities! Zero self sufficiency allowed! No off grids etc. and few see the big picture plan. Are we mice or men???🙏🏻🙄😎oops, they’re TRYING to continue this-warriors stand. 😁🙏🏻
It does not seem to be going after the old rv's (homeless) on the streets. It is going after the new model 2025 RV's with gas engines that are over 8,500 GVWR. The ones on the street are already ( I assume )owned and registered. I'm sure they will go after them with another law.
THEY DID NOT INFORM AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURERS OR RV MANUFACTURERS AHEAD OF TIME. Therefore there should be a ONE YEAR EXTENSION since most of these vehicles have already been produced. This is ridiculous. Give the manufacturers time to comply. Dint tell them after they already manufactured the vehicles.
So RV Chassis manufacturers have known this has been coming since 2020 and did nothing to take care of the issue. Now the regulation takes affect and Ford was the only Chassis manufacturer who is allowed in these states because they did what they were supposed to do. Sounds like Ford is going to get a lot of RV business in these states while other manufacturers who won’t change have problems. I understand the issue that people who want to purchase a new RV are having but this isn’t California CARB’s fault for demanding stricter regulations but those manufacturers thinking they would not actually put it into place. They were wrong.
It is good to report on issues at hand. Don't be misrepresentative of the content that you're reporting on. If there's a change in policies within any state then one has to choose whether they go there or live there.
Naturally the government exempts itself. Manufacturers should refuse to sell them to the government as well. Ironically I tow a travel trailer with an EV but I'm for freedom of choice. EV motorhomes are here including the gm one but this doesn't seem right.
In a way , RV manufacturers have themselves to blame just as much as they have the new state regulations to blame....The industry sat on its hands and felt they would be exempt from these new regulations...The industry knew these new rules were coming and they did next to nothing in lobbying to be exempt thinking they already would be...In essence , they were very lazy in trying to protect the interests of their industry plain and simple...One would have thought RV dealerships would have also joined into that lobbying effort along with the industry to be exempt from the rules...Nobody did anything and now the rules are here and everyone wants to cry victim....LUCKILY for us living here in Calif., upon retirement we bought ours new in 2018 so am not going to worry about it...
Good comment! How long has this been in the works? When should the lobbying have been done? It seems that this has been in the works for a while, long enough for fewer people to be surprised, but I don't know the chronology.
I live in Washington, part of the best coast, and I bought a used 2019 class C because the new PHEV class A won’t start going on sale until the end of 2025 at the earliest. I really like my EV car and would love to have the same freedom in an RV. There are plenty of heat and hot water systems that can run on gasoline or diesel, and I prefer induction cooking, so propane could be eliminated easily as well as a separate generator. The Thor PHEV can run on batteries and has a small gas engine as a generator in case the trip is longer. The battery can charge overnight at a campground, or at a fast charger
The RV industry DOES NOT manufacture the motor portion of the RV. How do you figure its their fault? It is the vehicle industry that has to make the power mode for the vehicles, and they are insisting on selling ICE trucks, and some ICE cars because they make much more money. Electric vehicle technology is expensive to develope and with the economy down they have more or less shelved it. GM had the VOLT which was probably the only electric/gas vehicle that made sense, and they cut production. There is hope however. Elon Musk is pretty much the only manufacturer that is attempting large vehicle electrification. it is in its infancy. Then Amazon has a fleet of electric trucks out, they are a start but they have their quirks as well. Toyota HAS a hydrogen car with ZERO emissions, but it is failing miserably because nobody in the fuel industry, want to support it. We have the cars, and they are for sale, but there are very few actual fueling stations for them and no one wants to build them. So the hydrogen car is failing. Why isnt California promoting the Hydrogen car instead of attacking the automotive industry? Someone is making money somewhere. The whole system is sick
@@lifequest7453 Hydrogen is a dead end and always has been. That's why nobody is promoting it any more except the crazy old coot of Toyota. Hydrogen pilot programs have become nightmares for their owners and once Toyota stopped subsidizing them what filling stations there were (which are mostly in California, by the way), became too costly to maintain. Hydrogen itself is an extremely poor choice for a fuel. It is very difficult to store reliably, can't be transported or stored very well in a pure gaseous state, and can't even be compressed very much without requiring an enormous amount of power (which turns Hydrogen into a bomb if you do, anyway). The only decent storage solution is to use metal hydrides as a medium and the conversion efficiency is extremely poor. Add it all up and you are sitting below 40% efficiency for hydrogen while electricity is above 90%. Battery round-trips are 95%+ efficient. Hydrogen basically has zero chance of being able to compete with batteries. Batteries have just gotten too good. -Matt

Way I see it, dealers and other sellers, will have to run up the odometer to just over 7,500 mi. Just tell buyer.
So if I buy a class b rv before Jan 1st 2025 , I will have no problem registering it in California in 2025 or in the future ?
Ok but what about the large truck ban? Delivering food, construction? Will all that cease?
People in California said that this would never happen will its happing now, California started by taking my trucking business now its your turn to lose your RV and your toys, thank god for Texas 😅
It’s actually $1.52 in taxes at the pump for gasoline. $1.84 for diesel
Never I will never buy an EV!!!
So we need to update our emissions regulations on RR on all RVs in order for us to keep using our RVs in California. Is that right?
NO this only applies to new vehicles sold in 2025 or later
Banning recreational vehicles but not private jets; go figure. More importantly, follow the money--all the way to Davos.
WA state is also part of the plan, along with Oregon, MA, NJ, NY. All blue states.
What does that mean for those who own them? Can you drive them there?
yes
You don’t want political comments. Well these states are blue you mentioned.
Don’t come here then.
@Lori245 No problem!
Yep, I picked up on that right away. It's not about clean air. It's about control. All blue states.

Besides Lance which other RV manufacturers are based in California or build RVs in California?
Does this ban affect DIY builders that build their own RVs using box trucks, vans, etc ., that may have gasoline or diesel engines?
When I was a kid growing up in LA, you could not even see the mountains at all because of how bad the smog was not to mention how bad my lungs hurt running around. They really turned the quality of life around here with gas regulations for millions of kids compared to what it was and is a much healthier environment.
"Smog" was from the toxic chemtrailing over the Pacific coastline.
What about CNG powered vehicles?
California is nuts! Until now all the manufacturers have been working very hard to figure out how to make all of their products CA-compliant. I think it is awesome that they are finally saying, "We are going to keep doing what we're doing, and we will just cut California out." The average RV only drives a few miles every year anyway. Ridiculous!
Most RV's in California are parked as residences.
I live in N.M. I guess I need to hurry up and get my RV.
This is gonna be bad for rv storage centers in CA and for those who own them and string theirs in rv storage centers even
Are e450 gas rv included?
Does this mean if I buy a new motorhome I can’t take it to camp in California?

On 11/19/2024, RVIA staffers and CARB met to discuss a possible exemption or delay to the RV segment of these regulations. Previously, CARB had taken the position that they were following written law and no exemption could be allowed by CARB. They have now reversed that position and admitted they have the power to create exemptions. RVIA issued a statement that they are fairly confident they can delay or reach a full exemption. Another meeting is scheduled for early December and ongoing negotiations continue until then. I should note that the State of California exempted its own fleet of vehicles, such as CalTrans and prison buses, and other large state-owned vehicles that would fall under the same regulations.
thank you so much! This came out after the podcast was released but we will definitely keep following this- appreciate the note!
Can register in South Dakota ?
What is a “ban” pray tell? As opposed to a ban.
Can you register it there?
if it is used which they define as more than 7500 miles. Most big ones have 2000-3000 at the dealership just from delivery.
The sales and use are 100% different. Many CA border states will be getting rich from the sales.
A great opportunity for RV rental companies to sell off units after 7500 miles.
Maybe new business opportunity for Newmar to rent. Then, they can actually deliver fully tested products.
what a way to clear the streets of poor ppl living in old motorhomes.
It is going after the
new model 2025 RV's with gas engines that are over 8,500 GVWR.
The ones on the street are already ( I assume )owned and registered.
I'm sure they will go after them with another law.
Um think its new motorhomes not old.
Dint tell them after they already manufactured the vehicles.
they have known about this for years

They all seem to be registered in Montana anyway.
There are places you can order from.
It is good to report on issues at hand.
Don't be misrepresentative of the content that you're reporting on.
If there's a change in policies within any state then one has to choose whether they go there or live there.
The dealer only needs to change the ODO to 7500
Geez, what do all of those states having common blue blue blue?
This will be short lived.
Naturally the government exempts itself. Manufacturers should refuse to sell them to the government as well. Ironically I tow a travel trailer with an EV but I'm for freedom of choice. EV motorhomes are here including the gm one but this doesn't seem right.
What happens if somebody wants to sell their used motor home in California does anybody know?
you sell it like normal as long as it is pre 2025 year or a 2025 with more than 7500 miles on it
Good. 😊
Wasn’t planning to go to California anyway!
It is the vehicle industry that has to make the power mode for the vehicles, and
they are insisting on selling ICE trucks, and some ICE cars because they make
much more money.
Electric vehicle technology is expensive to develope and with the economy down
they have more or less shelved it.
GM had the VOLT which was probably the only electric/gas vehicle that made sense,
and they cut production.
There is hope however.
Elon Musk is pretty much the only manufacturer that is attempting large vehicle
electrification. it is in its infancy.
Then Amazon has a fleet of electric trucks out, they are a start but they have
their quirks as well.
Toyota HAS a hydrogen car with ZERO emissions, but it is failing miserably
because nobody in the fuel industry, want to support it. We have the cars,
and they are for sale, but there are very few actual fueling stations for them
and no one wants to build them. So the hydrogen car is failing.
Why isnt California promoting the Hydrogen car instead of attacking
the automotive industry?
