@@dreamchaser7603 First off, I said "concept," not "aspect." An aspect would be if the romance was the sub-plot instead of the main plot, or at least if the romance plot has more nuance to it.
I was talking about the concept of the show as a whole; the basis if you will. Essentially, the inciting incident is that her entire family dies, and then the rest of the show focuses on a love triangle between her and two of her adoptive brothers... My issue comes from the fact that this (slightly problematic) romance story is the main focus of the show.
I get that this show is a romance drama, but from reviews I've seen, it seems like the death of her parents and sister are just a means of getting her to the Walter house, and she doesn't seem to really be that affected at all??? Like, the concept would be fine if the main focus of the show was her trying to process her grief, with us seeing the shifts in her personality and how that goes on to affect her romantic life. But instead her family dying is an afterthought, and she is immediately shot into a love triangle that removes her agency by not allowing her to grow and change as a character...
Like, don't get me wrong, I ADORE romance shows. Do I like queer ones a little better? Yeah, but straight ones are amazing, too, if done right. And a good RomCom is AMAZING when I just want a silly goofy time... But romantic dramas just don't work for me if the only drama comes in the form of a love triangle or an ex. When it comes to drama, nuance is key.
So yeah, long story short "aggressively straight" just means that the draw/appeal of the show is JUST a straight relationship that is questionable at best...
And to recontextualize it: I often take issue with a show when a gay character is portrayed as if they have no other personality traits other than being gay, or when a show/movie is focused on a gay character and the plot is just that the character is gay (Ex. "Love Simon"). And shows that are "aggressively straight" are just shows where the main characters have little to no personality outside of romantic attraction, and/or the plot is only about these characters being straight.
I just like when shows and movies have more depth, nuance, and character focus.
You should watch the show it's really good it's kinda like summer I turned pretty but like country vibes it's pretty good I'm team Alex But make your own assumptions about that❤
