  • This yarn bowl was turned from American Black Walnut. I hardly ever use the lathe but its definitely a tool I'd like to upgrade soon!

I'm sure you know this but be careful wearing a watch using a lathe! A friend got a nasty injury that way..!

Joe The end product was a lovely bowl you should be proud of.
I hope you don't mind me saying that in the use of a lathe there are a few safety points in using a faceplate to hold the blank, the size of the recess or tennon compared to the jaw size and the angle of the hole you need to make to match the jaws. All for your safety as the bank spins at speed. Please, for your safety, watch some instructional UA-cam videos and practice. You will save on the heart ache and cuts and bruises! lol.
UA-camrs I watch (They do Lives that you can ask questions of at the same time) Martin Saban-Smith, Colwin Way (Axminster Tools), Templeboy Turning (Steve Twydell).

Cheers mate! Don’t mind at all! There is a lot to learn when it comes to turning. I don’t do a lot of turning but I’d like to do some more as time goes on. There are a lot of skilful turners out there that I follow. I’ll give Steve Twydell a miss for sure though thanks haha had some bad run ins with him

Absolutely brilliant. Super nice finish on this mate. I couldn’t help but notice that you have a lathe that is identical to mine. Possibly not the same brand but the same in shape. I have been trying for years to get a Chuck like you have on yours for years. I’ve quite possibly been looking in the wrong areas. Do you have any idea where I could grab one? Mine is an obsolete brand now but it is a kinzo. Great video mate 👍🏼👍🏼

Thanks Ian! Its just a cheap lathe I got online. A friend of mine actually helped get my chuck because I hadn’t got a clue what I was looking for either haha

Neat video. I didn't get the literal meaning of "The Yarn Bowl" till the very end. Enjoyable watch and listen.

Is it as satisfying to sand and finish a piece on the lathe as it looks? Because it looks amazing. Speaking of smooth, very slick edit on the video for a beautiful project. Well done.

It really is. Usually sanding is a right chore but on a lathe its brilliant. Especially when its silky smooth to the touch haha Really glad you liked the edit too Frank! Thank you 😊

Thanks Brad! Really glad you liked it. I’m really sorry but all I know is its an SIP lathe. I bought it off Ebay years ago. I bought the chuck from a woodturning event and unfortunately I don’t know what make or brand it is

Sorry Joe but I’ve been away from wood turning for about 10 yrs and am soon setting up my new workshop, unfortunately I think woodturning has gone backwards. Everybody seems to be using carbide tips and abrasives instead of sharpening their chisels and getting really good finishes before any abrasives.

Thanks mate! I’m really glad you enjoyed the edit. I don’t know enough about turning to be able to talk through the steps as a “how to” so hoped this video would still be of interest haha
