We had many sail boats anchored in Fagasa Bay back in the days from a couple of days to more than a month. You guys should consider that once the boat is up and running. But I would wait till around summer since the water at this time of the year near the northern part of Tutuila is usually rough and choppy.
Hooray!!! I was just wondering if you were feeling your boat was seaworthy yet, and low and behold, look at you! I love Kip's oh so accurate assessment of what to expect - waves and waves and waves. 😀
Congratulations amigos! The headsail is necessary for balance as well as control while ‘tacking’. It’s actually more difficult to sail without the headsail. The Mizzen is useful when sailing close to the wind...you always raise the sails stern to bow...so Mizzen first...with the Mizzen sheeted in the sail will act like a weather cock and keep the boat pointed toward the wind, making the raising and lowering of the mainsail easy even if the motor is off...very useful leaving anchor under sail. Don’t be afraid to raise your sails...the boat is designed for their integrated use.
OMG this is such a dream!! I'm Samoan & was born & raised in the mainland. I never lived in Samoa before but watching your videos make me want to move out there so bad!! My dream is to own a sailboat & my boyfriend has always talked about living in a boat one day. This video is giving me so many positive vibes I love every second of it. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful life with us!!
WOW and YAY! what an awesome experience! CONGRATULATIONS on making your first sailing and what an awesome experience for the kiddos as well, when you guys were making the turn I noticed a little island in the far distance is that connected to the main island or was that an actual island, love everything about this video you guys are on your way to more sailing adventures WHOOP WHOOP!👏👏👏
Yes, it felt so good to finally get our boat out and use it for what it was made for ⛵️ That was indeed an island, Aunu’u. It’s just off the southeast tip of Tutuila.
This is my second favorite video of yours (its going to take A LOT to be better than the one where Kip spits out the ceremonial drink!). I have been fortunate not to have ever lived more than 4 miles from the South Carolina coast-I was even born in an ocean view hospital-but I have never manned a sail boat. How blessed is your family to go from freezing in Idaho to LIVING on a sailboat, I am impressed and more than a little envious. Happy New Year, and because of y'all, American Samoa is now on my bucket list.
Wish you all the best and enjoy your adventure! You should be out there often and explore and film different places. More and more people will watch and subscribe to your YT Channel!
GREAT JOB! Thank you for sharing. I love the South Pacific! Your sailing ⛵️ was spectacular. Thrilled for your sailing adventures in 2022! Yes to sailing to Samoa, Tonga and more South Pacific islands for your family. ❤️ #highfive #greatsailing #2022 #AmericanSamoa #happynewyear
Awesome! I’ll tell you this, everyone will try to talk you out of it, telling you all the reasons why it’s a bad idea, but but buying our boat and living in it for the past year and a half, we have no regrets. Yes, it takes money and yes, there are never ending projects, but that’s life. We’re having fun on our adventure and we love the freedom and sense of self-sustainability of living on our boat. If you’ve done your homework and it feels right, we say go for it!
13:06 What a spectacular scenery. With Nate in the frame, i almost can feel how proud he has come with his family. All the wonders and beautiful things the island of Samoa can offer is an spectacular experience. Im a full blood Samoan and i still haven't planted a foot in Samoa. This is definitely a bucket list to complete. Many warm wishes and blessings AmSamFam Great!! Video. I can truly tell there is so much to be proud of. AmSamFam Samoa at heart family
“Anchors away!”🌊🌊🌊⛵️⚓️…I have to say, This was very exciting to watch! You know I think of the writers, Margret Mead, Thor Heyerdahl, the famous Robert Louis Stevens, artist Vincent Van Gogh… of course many other discoverers who sailed the ocean to open their eyes to all the possibilities life offers and the courageous desire to seek and appreciate… today watching your family do what you do best, travel, discover, learn all that’s out there, live, life! To feel that and then go and DO, was so exciting to watch! Thank you for sharing all of your dreams and experiences of life in Samoa with us and showing us how it can be done! A great example to our youth and inspiring for us ole fogies!😉 Beautiful to see all of you out in the open sea! “E leai se mea e sili atu I lo lou aiga”
Thank you! It felt pretty surreal, finally being out there on our own boat after all the months of working and years of dreaming❤️ We love sharing our experiences, so we’re glad you’ve enjoyed watching them!
Your vessel looks larger than 47feet.. Congratulations on your maiden .. Im wondering if you can use teak or Tung oil on your woodwork rather than getting caught up in the never ending faf of varnishing which the UV light cracks and flakes away without really protecting the wood underneath. 🤔 Oils soak in to depth and protect the fibres... They also shed water very quickly after application.
Having grown up with sailboats...just a bit of vocab: Port=Left; Starboard=Right. When you are getting ready to turn and adjust the sail to the other side of the boat, just prior call out, "Stand by to come about" so everyone is aware and don't get bonked in the head, and then as you make the move once again call out "coming about."
Just catching your channel. Nice boat guys, she will be a great home on the sea. It would help to have some battens in the mainsail and also tie the clew of the main down to the boom with a loop of line to stop it ripping out if the wind gets up. Look forward to more from you guys. The little fella clearly is well into the boat and sailing. Andy UK

Talofa lava AmSamFam! First of all I like give thanks our Heavenly Father that your family and all families in the two Samoan island are well. I saw your umu video and sorry that it didn’t go the way it should but keep doing it and remember the island of samoa is and her people are happy people and quick to teach you or even help you in any way they can. But the most important things about making an umu make sure you have a lot of woods so it turn those rocks into red hot rocks not dark rocks. Oka! Nate😂
@@Lordship728 haha, yes, thank you for these tips! We tried again this year and went much better than the first 😄 We asked some locals to help teach us and I think we might even try again on our own next year 🤞
Congratulations and Happy New Year. Just seeing your boat sail and knowing you guys through your channel, I feel like it’s gonna take a lot of training. Not only Nate but the whole family. Everyone’s gotta know to operate if it comes to any worst case scenarios. Other than that, it just looks beautiful seeing the boat out in the water. I don’t know if I missed it, but does the dingy have a name?
Yes, we still have a lot of practicing to do before we take on any big adventures! As Nate and I get more familiar and comfortable, we’ll start involving the kids in everything. We’re looking forward to being able to hand the controls over to them while we kick back and enjoy the ride 😉 The dinghy is our friends’ and it’s name is Wilson 🏐
Thank you for s great video. Lots of teak decking to caulk. I used black Sikaflex self leveling sealant. Clean out the old caulk. Use masking tape to cover the deck surface. Push the caulk ahead in order to press it down. Use a rubber gloved finger to press it in. Pull the tape once the caulk skins over but before it hardens. Let dry and you are done.
Living your dream!

Nicely done, maiden voyage was short, but successful. Congrats on you first outing.

What an adventure! So exciting !
You all don't even know how to sail???? Yet ...k I'll shut up.
As a new sub, may I ask what you folks do for a living
Nice
Good for you all. Super cool.
Yea easier to sail with the headsail up too,you need a new mainsail that one is flat and will never move you boat very fast
Wow, congratulations guys! This is awesome and we are excited to see where she takes you next!
It bad time for you guys to enjoy your boat good on you
can we charter your boat??
Got her underway. Nice. You won't have to ever fly back to the states now with that.
Haha, Yeah, but instead of getting there in 8 hours, we’ll get there in 8 weeks 😄
