A lot of old timers just refer to motocross bikes in general as race bikes. Most of the old motocross models would have something like “for closed course competition” stamped on vin/model plates, giving the impression that they were designed for racing

I got my 2002 cr250r for $1200 back in 07 with a fresh top end. It ran strong but looked rough. I still got her and she has been totally been rebuilt except for the crank because it didn’t need it.

Competition Race is what CR stands for. They were 'out of the box' Race bike.
Packing a silencer has 2 affects. To quiet the bike and also the can is part of the bikes tune. Can packed with insulation is effectively double the volume as far as engine can tell. Bike will have a great mid punch minus packing. In most cases a full packed can will let the motor get full revs.

I love ur videos and n love the fact that you get the 2stroke vibe ! I recently was able to get my old RACE BIKE back a 1990 CR 125 restored it and refreshed it so yea look out +50 class. People see a CR or KX or whatever n the first thing that comes to mind is RACE BIKE ! Maybe cuz that’s what they were designed for with the bigger suspension travel idk. I’m like you when it comes to RACE BIKE I’m lookin for truck parts motor mods like you said. Keep up the cool ass vids man much love from Kentucky

@LUND MX I was always taught to use pink insulation, thanks for the heads up on the multi purpose stuff. Something I find that work easier also is electrical tape.

It's obvious that's a race bike! Works triple trees, quick change race pipe, no seat cuz fast guys don't sit. I put solid sheet metal on my radiators. Rocks are not problem now. Sweet buy!!!

My friend had a 99 back in high school. That thing ripped. At the time i only had my YZ 125 and was asking him to rip around on it. You got a good deal considering today's prices in the used market

The first bike I raced was an 84 xr500 , box stock in mx. Raced a 650 yamaha twin in vintage mx and cc. I've been beaten by folks on much worse. Just my two cents.

Nice score, to any of us yes a race bike is something fully built but hey when I was a kid my yz80 to me and all of my buddies was a full blown race bike lol!
So lucky to get that bike for that price man. Wish I could find a 250 for that price. One time I did got a 06 yz250f for 700 needed shock repaired and valve shims.

Clutch lever may be cheap but the brake lever is a $70 lever. I have a 97 cr250 and it's mint and I love it!

Sounds crazy but a polisport restyle kit for the 02-07 fits on these and pretty much bolts on i did it to my 99 125
Got my 98 cr 250 for 600$ complete but blown got it running mint and love the thing I’d buy that in a heartbeat lol
Cool bike, you should do a video about cleaning up alloy parts that are crusty with cleaners and polish or something. That would be useful to us crusty bike owners.

Sounds like a jetting or Reed valve issue.. also may wanna check the compression.. may need a new top end.. or all the above, either way, you just made a bunch of money.. it's a 2 stroke, an won't cost much to tune up... an she's obviously a keeper!
I just picked up a 2004 cr125 for $600 off market place. Working on getting it started.
i remember 25 years ago i could also ride the bikes right from the drive-way. unfortunatly things changed a lot and too many houses were built.
So I guess to be considered a race bike it’s a bit of both. So you have to race it but you want to have it modified aswell. All on perception. Giddy up Clint!

I picked up a 94 cr250 for $1750. here in New Zealand that’s a deal they go for about 5k on the low end. Love the videos keep up the great work man. It would be really cool to see a yz490 vs that IT that ur friend has. keep in mind if u get a 85 onward yz490 with the 5 speed do a 3 gear start as all they did was add a lower 1st gear. 2nd on a 85 onward is the same as 1st on a 82-84
My son on law gave me a 1998 lx 250 it just needed a stator and plastics and it's now fully restored with goodies and bling lol its like a brand new bike I put the Chevy truck graphics with 98 number its awesome I'm keeping it forever 😮

A race bike to me is a bike that was built by the manufacturer to race such as a yz250f, or crf450r. Just the same way a ktm 300 xc is an Enduro bike because it is built to be raced or ridden in the woods

A Race bike is any bike setup for the purpose of making you go faster on the track. For some it's suspension, for others it's engine work, different strokes for different folks. At the end of the day, a stick bike can race but I wouldn't call it a "Race" bike until it's purpose built for it's intended rider and racing style.
When evaluating the accuracy of someone's description of something (dirt bike), considering the source of that description goes a long way in determining it's accuracy but for the $700 you have in to it you did extremely well on this deal, after you remove the dents from the pipe you can remove the heat marks with a car buffer and some heavy cut rubbing compound, use it on the whole pipe as long as it's not rusted it makes the pipe look new.
I used this stuff I got at the Harley Davidson dealer for one of my bikes exhaust that removes bluing. It’s called (Blue Job) I know odd name lol. It’s a white powder with a little applicator you wet then dap into the powder then work the exhaust with it and wow…. I took out some seriously bad blueing off pipes from 87 so it def works. Just fig I’d put it out there for others to know as-well

Back in '96 I went to look at a Suzuki GS1100 custom near Riverside , and was informed by the 'owner' that it was his 'race bike' , I made my excuses and left - quickly. The state of his teeth should have been a clue. Loved the re-enactment of your sellers conversation , I mean , it ain't for street riding , so it must be for racing - what else you gonna do with it ? I'm impressed the bike has survived the previous owners attempts at 'maintenance' ,"what chance has modern fuel injected four stroke got against that level of neglect ?

A race bike is a bike that is built to withstand racing conditions wether that be a stock bike from the factory or something with few or many mods.
gas tank rubber mounts on the frame other thing you need zip ties for....older style 2 strokes anyway lol

I hear that zip ties actually save weight which is important on a race bike. The hole at the air boot is actually to let the dirt out. Your new find is full of weight saving ideas...hehehe. Nice find..That is the epitome of a real race bike right there..You now have one...
Its called zip tie tuning. Good for 5 hp.
it's a entry level race bike from the factory there was no spark arrestor so legally in many states you could only run these bikes on private property or a track which technically makes it an entry level race bike...

My 2 cents is that 50,60,80,125,250, or 500cc two strokes were race bikes back in the day. Modern bikes are 50, 250f or 450f.
My son just bought a 91 cr500 for 1000 and a 70 f5 longhorn in great original condition for 250 He will probably keep these and add them to his collection.
Race bike has the big pipe. Trail bikes is the other bike from that gentleman’s perspectives. Like a regular car is a Chrysler reliant K and a Race car is a IROC Z28 with the fire bird on the hood.

Easier way to instal the carb and air boot….
Simple put the carb into the subframe air boot do not tighten it down then slide it into the other carb adjusting to line up and bam 💥 it goes in and ur done

IMO a race bike in relation to dirt bikes is any model intended for competition use and not a “trail” model.
