Maggie James: What was the idea behind making this video come together?
Honestly it was mostly the brain child of the director Justin Clough. He wanted to highlight the parallels between an interrogation room & a recording studio. Both places people confess their stories. I loved the grit and honesty to the story & how it related to the song, & my own confession of my truth. The day we shot it was a long day, but there was magic on set the whole time. I’m so proud of the entire team and the way this video came out. Definitely the best visual project I’ve ever been a part of. Stoked for it to finally be in the world.

Love how he stands up at "I'm a little more, I'm a dark horse" after the interrogation. It's like he's worked something out in that confession/testimony that builds the truth and confidence up in him to accept not only what he's been through, but how that shaped him into the unique “last-round fighter dark horse” he sings about. Great music video and great song....those things don't always pair up. The melody is perfect, the lyrics are bomb. Just great art right here. I'm so sad to have missed his Q&A 3 years ago (I just discovered this gem last month!). Always nice finding new artists!

Dark Horse was written on 1/13/17 so I wanted to incorporate that somewhere in the video. Justin (the director) asked me if there was any number of significance for the mugshot - and it just so happened to fit perfectly. (If you look at the calendar on the police desk next to the typewriter, I actually turned it to Jan 13th too…)

Man, I would make a video for any song on the album. I think it could be cool to do one for every song and make a visual album. Off the top of my head I think dip would make a really cool visual. Although, hopefully the next official music video you see from me is a new song…. :)

Maggie James: What was it like shooting for this music video?
This video was easier than normal. Its my story so I really just leaned into myself to find the right emotion. We started the day around noon and actually shot the studio scenes (last scenes of the video) first so I would be fresh. By the time the video was wrapped around midnight, we shot the opening scene & I was tired and beat up from the day - so it worked perfectly. Overall Justin (the director) & his crew & I had worked together before and had formed a great friendship, so the chemistry on set was perfect.
