      you are still very young and that's a good thing. I think if you have someone to practise with (maybe your parents or friends) then it'll make learning the language easy. Try to also learn yoruba slang words and use youtube videos to help with pronunciation.

      You should definitely dabble in music (Afrobeat Yoruba Artist) and movies (not sure what is appropriate for someone your age). Although I was born in the states I speak Yoruba pretty well. I watched the Yoruba movies, without the subtitles then with subtitles to get a better understanding of the language and how it's used. It's never too late to learn there are many tools out there where you can learn and your parents are a great resource for you.

      Who expected their children to automatically absorb the culture and language of their parents by magic. Without any parental input whatsoever.
      No one is quicker to drop and denigrate their culture than we Africans.

    My fifth great grandfather arrived in America from Yorubaland some 225 years ago. I lived in Puerto Rico, Korea and Switzerland and learned a great deal of their respective languages. I should really invest in learning Yoruba as well. Thanks so much for this video. So great to see grandma teaching the girls with such passion and joy!

    Learned it when I was 5 by myself, then I made my parents speak it to me all the time. My parents are weird especially being born in the states I wanted them to speak to me in their language. I learned from the music and watching Yoruba movies. Yoruba tonal kills me most of the time but it's a dope language.

      @@User__795 It's a flex. A weird one at that. They don't want us to have accents. 🙃 It's strange to me and thank goodness I was the child who loves culture immensely. Having gone to Nigeria around the age of five and who knew I was from somewhere😂. It's like they were embarrassed to know they are from somewhere other than America. I have no idea what they were thinking. After coming from Nigeria at that young age I fell in love. I make sure that I am in tune with my culture. I started learning Yoruba on my own and one day I said to my parents at 8 to speak to me in Yoruba only. They were shocked and I learned it better that way plus utilizing the movies as my guide. I can say I understand it very well speak it sufficiently, lol. They expect magic it's like when they want you to face your studies and then ask when you're getting married🤣🤣🤣. I'm like wtf, 🙃. This is literally the story of my family’s language abilities. 😂 My grandma is Swedish and they chose to keep Swedish a secret language so they could talk about stuff that was inappropriate for children in front of us. Then my dad acted all insulted when I couldn’t speak it.

    • @magscovers8924
      @magscovers8924 3 роки тому +5

      @@avatara82 Part of the problem is there’s nobody to practice it with. We used to live in Chicago where there are Swedish neighborhoods, however, once we moved, nobody knew it because of the lack of ethnic Swedes in our area. My Farmor is now in an assisted living place and she probably has Alzheimer’s. They don’t label it as that, but that’s kind of what it’s like. I am grateful she knows Swedish, English, and American Sign Language. They say being bilingual helps and she’s trilingual. There was also a Swedish couple living at this place and I said “Farmor you have to go hang out with them! They’re from Värmland too!” That’s honestly so big to find someone from the same province as you today in the US. That still blows my mind. I hope they are speaking lots of Swedish to each other.
      As far as Swedish goes though, I think it’s something that’s sadly been lost to my family, but we do still carry some ethnic and cultural Swedish traditions. Like we might have juletomtens, peppakakor, bullas, etc. But little of the language.
