Instead of just random poles, what would be other ideal perching installations that could be added around the pond? I was thinking light poles around the perimeter of the lake that would demarcate the lake visually in the night shots, but that could be costly and might not allow the owls to hide as easily. They might not perch on them either, but was thinking of other useful installations that would have multi-purpose than just random poles. I like the bat house idea as well.
That’s brilliant. But that brings Owl Capone closer to perch and hunt the ducks. I just realized how that sounds. Nature will do what nature does. 🙏✝️👍
be careful spreading fertilizer around your pond, not only do bass and other native fish not tolerate salts and nutrients well, but as you increase nutrient levels in the pond you'll risk algae blooms (nasty and sometimes toxic) and uncontrollable weeds!
@@FreEntity that too! It's less the bacteria attacking the fertilizer itself, and more that the fertilizer increases algae growth, which shades the plants on the bottom, so they die and the microbes consume the oxygen as they break the organic material down. It's called eutrophication, and is what causes dead zones in the Mississippi river, gulf and other places that receive high levels of nutrients!
Good news is algae blooms arent instant so if one begins you can mitigate it, maybe add a bunch of agitation with a couple of big fountain sprayers and that should keep the oxygen up while you get some water replaced to drop the nitrogen.
I think if weeds are present... you need a motorboat with improvise rake on its side to do the weeding... years after years probably built some organic compost...
If mowing the backside of the pond bank is still an issue. I recommend turning it into a butterfly garden/pollinator haven by planting native perennials. It will benefit many other species of wildlife as well. It can be managed by burning once every year or two, no mowing needed!
I like what everyone said about showing a bass jumping out of the water. I like the logo! Would be cool to have an owl perched somewhere too. Best of luck with it all. It's looking great.
"owl capone" is a female, and "hooter" is a male. Like bass, the female owl is bigger than the male. You can DRAMATICALLY increase how many rats and mice and other rodenty critters they are able to catch by giving them tall poles or other perches to sit on and hunt from, and this can also help out the hawks on your farm who will be the day crew on rodent patrol.
YES! There are communities which spent many thousands of dollars with traps and poisons to try to eradicate high rodent populations but failed miserably, and instead when they switched to encouraging predators like owls, snakes, and foxes, THAT ended up being what worked. This has happened in more controlled studies around areas of Missouri and notably the town of Apopka, FL.
@@SuperDaveP270 There’s a Doc on UA-cam about Israeli farmers using owls to control mice and rats and it works but unfortunately owls fly into Palestinian lands to hunt as well and in Muslim script owls are considered bad and get shot down.
I started this pond series earlier today and have been binging it. I love every second of it. You have a beautiful place. Can't hardly wait to see it completed.
That might have been the smoothest sponsor read I've seen in a long time. That long shot where you are cutting down the millet on the island really shows how deep it is.
I’ve been following this pond build series since right after you started the build and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I can’t wait until you stock it and eventually start catching monster bass. My grandpa had 3 bulldozer and he built the pond on our land and he built ponds for many others in our area. I ran one of his dozers but mine had a cutting blade on it. We cleared the land behind loggers for a local paper mill in Western Kentucky so they could plant new trees.
It's going to be a sad and happy day when this pond project is finished. I have been loving these weekly update videos and I know they are going to be finishing soon.
😔 I know. I look forward to these videos all week because I love this pond build so much. Maybe he'll keep weekly trail cam footage uploads and some underwater videos. I know he said at one point he was going to have an underwater live stream channel for the bass. I can't wait to see what kind of vegetation he plants in the pond as well.
I know right? He did say he’s keeping the night animal footage as well as a camera in the pond. It’s the feeling of nature, home, family, CONSISTENCY, and their love and respect for each other and family and the land, in my humble opinion lol🙏🏻🔥❤️
A pond is a ton of continuous work and upkeep so there won't ever be a shortage of things to do, things to learn from, problems to solve, and upgrades and changes to be made.
You should never really need fertilizer around a water. Simply spread a composte tea or top soil and that will add all the missing nutrients to your soil. Cause the nitrogen runoff will damage your pond.
This is amazing. I can't imagine the cost let alone the time expenditure. Absolutely beautiful. Yer little one is terrific -- reminds me of my Grand pie. Well here on 3 and sticking around. So impressed.
You need to watch a short film called The Biggest Little Farm. You could do so much with the land you have to encourage a fantastic eco system. Loved your back yard pond but this is another level.
I love the logo however I definitely think due to the actual occupants of the pond/ farm. I think you should change the Crane/ stork/ herring to a owl.
A Crimson colored Oak in the logo would be a nice contrast and center of focus. Always look forward to every update. Nice to see the critters settling in.
This is really close to the moment we’ve all be waiting for as we followed your creation with interest . It is looking fabulous. The nocturnal activities you show us are marvellous. What a well populated location is your pond and nearby fields . The owls are not often seen by many of us , so it is a great opportunity to see them going about their business .
LOVING the pond build. One if the best series on UA-cam by far. Thanks for documenting it and sharing it. I look forward to each one. On the logo, you might want to incorporate the crown in the design.
Wish there were a way to tag Moby before he goes in the big pond so if he’s caught you can keep up with his growth/changes. It would be kinda cool for all the originals from your backyard! Anyway, love seeing the progress!! Thanks for sharing all this with us❤️
Really miss a pond update. Looking forward to a new video. I’m hoping tonight? Love your channel. Try to support you all the best I’m able. Can’t wait to see you catching bass out of the pond. You’re creating an entire mini ecosystem. Congrats!
Im loving this series, and since we're practically neighbors it just kinda hits home a little differently for me. Thanks a bunch guys, really enjoying your content !!! Also, if the circle that outlines the logo was in the shape of the state of Alabama, that would look cool also !!!
You should add some aquatic plants the a section of the pond. Its really beneficial for the water quality and some baby fish will eat bugs and such off them. Also make sure to get some snails and maybe add some top water plants like lilys and cat tails. Baby fish hide in plants on the edges of ponds at night
Hey there, I'm an American living in Thailand and I just found your channel and have enjoyed watching your development of your pond. I am in the process of buying just over 7 acres of rice fields and I'm going to build a half acre pond on it but I'm going 40 feet deep so it will give me water year round. We have a dry season that can be pretty severe but at the 40 foot level you have all the water you want. Instead of growing rice I'm going to use the dirt from the pond to terrace the property so I can grow vegetables. Anything I can grow that isn't rice because everyone grows rice and I will have an instant market for my crops. I just subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing the rest of your videos.
Always cut straight up and down the hills on the tractor, in low gear, never sideways. Also of course, don't turn around on a hillside angle. You could always leave it natural also, better for the wildlife. I wouldn't cut all the way down to the water's edge either, resist the urge. Create a buffer. Plants and vegetation around the water's edge protects wildlife and water purity. My 2 cents, Been there done that. Blueberries would be nice around there, plenty of sun.
I can't fathom the enjoyment you get from seeing your hard word paying off day after day. I have loved every minute of watching this ponds creation. Props to you.
Love the pond updates! I’m a fellow kubota owner and know how scary mowing on slopes can be. Not sure if you’ve ever looked into them, but Ventrac makes some small mowing tractors that are built to cut steep grades. They handle slopes up to 30% cutting side slopes. Could be a fun toy to add to the farm!
For mowing the slopes I would recommend a tractor called a ventrac. We use it at the golf course I work at to mow steep slopes because of the wide wheel base and low center of gravity. It feels very comfortable to operate in steep conditions that would normally be very uncomfortable in other machines
So many comments (mine included) about the pond logo, am starting to agree, leave as is and keep it simple? Have been watching your channel long before the backyard pond, and can’t wait to see your family pulling bass out of the new pond! The “pond fill” is taking much longer than we anticipated, can’t wait to see it with the lights on and to see you guys fishing off of the dock!!! Great stuff, please keep them coming. I do wonder, will it be deep enough???
I recommend some Purple Martin houses adjacent to the pond. They rely on humans for housing and they repay you by eating flying insects. They love being near large bodies of water.
We need more tall T posts in the field for the owls to hunt. Also, maybe a big owl nesting box as a more permanent mouse solution. A two for one. We get a watch an owl family grow up on your channel as well.
For cutting the slope on your pond. Have your mechanic move the tractor tires out to the widest position then 4 to 1 slope will be easy to do, 2 to 1 if your brave. Or you can just back up the slope
Excellent I have thoroughly enjoyed all of your videos. They owls do enjoy sitting looking for prey. Maybe you could put the odd 6ft post in the ground here and there for the owls to perch on. They will love them and it will give you somewhere to look for their pellets too. John from Scotland 🏴
I would recommend an offset flail mower. It would be perfect for the water side of the dam. As for the back side, I always start at the top and go straight down. It shouldn't be a problem with a bush hog. Just keep the tractor in 4 wheel drive and you shouldn't have any problem with the tractor loosing traction and sliding down the hill.
Newer version can rotate vertically & help manage encroachment of woods/shrubs into a field. Just make sure no one is around while you spray wood chips.
You have the cleanest looking trailcam footage I've ever seen in my life. I have no idea how on earth you get it looking so crisp, even zooming there's hardly any noise
I’m assuming you’re going to make this a fairly natural ecosystem. You should start adding the small stock now. Things like minnows and crawfish would do fine already. Be plenty of bugs and stuff for them to eat.
FYI…They make some Free 3D files for metal posts to give Owls & other birds of prey something to grab on with their feet. You’ve got an awesome habitat that’s accepting all the changes!
My gf been complaining about knives an wanting a new set for Christmas I started looking this morning for ones to get for her, this timing couldn't of been more perfect will be using your code.. oh an I'm happy to see the progress cant wait for it to be full.
You really have a soothing voice. I'm not even that intrested in pond building and i STILL see these video's. You should by a narrator on nature shows. :)
In that logo, if there was some way you could make the two letter "O"'s in the Crims'o'n 'O'ak to be owl eyes..... or just incorporate the owls in some other way, it would be awesome.
I used to mow Dams for a living. If you flip the centers on your wheels to make the foot print wider on the tractor you can get on the slope no problem and mow almost anything. The easiest way is just put the tires from the right to the left and the left to the right of the tractor. We mowed with 15’ bay wings as well as 7’ bush hogs on our smaller tractors.
Since it's a fishing pond, you should add fish into the logo - or even, make them a main piece - the tree is no longer there, so the logo could be wood / fish, but I guess it would be confusing for people looking for the tree and learning it's no longer there....
I enjoy the night shots of you talking about the animals. I'm amazed by owls and they are interesting. My grandma loved owls. They are funny how you see nothing but their glowing eyes and when they take off and you see glowing eyes flying very trippy. Lol
When you mentioned Hooter being on the pole that you use for timelapses, I had a couple thoughts: 1) Perhaps a small horizontal bar at the top (making a T) to help them perch more easily. It might be easier to timelapse as well (if you're using a wraparound leg like Gorillapods, etc.). 2) When Hooter flew, the bar wiggled quite a bit. Your timelapses might get a bit shakey if it's windy. If you were able to stiffen that up, I think you'd have smoother timelapses. Love seeing all the critters. Would having some trees along the pond be feasible? It might add some shade for the fish and other wildlife might be apt to stop by (maybe the owls would nest there). Also, it seems to me (a complete non-expert) that the trees might help prevent bank runoff into the pond given you're always getting hit with storms. It's great seeing your pond come together! I always look forward to seeing your next video.
I wouldn’t stock my pond with predator fish like bass until you have stocked it with your forage fish. Then wait one year before stocking predators. I know you are anxious but to have a great fishery it’s the only way. This way your forage will spawn the first year a give you 100,000 of bait fish. I have caught bass in mine that are not even 6 months old and weigh 4 lbs or more. Pigs with fins!!!
The size difference in the owls could be age or sex. Generally in birds of prey, females are larger. Owls are usually solitary hunters. Make sure if you have pest control for the mice that it is eco friendly because if the owls eat a poisoned mouse, the owls will die. Owls are your best pest control.
I'm kind of curious, why put Bonnie and Clyde in the pond if the intention of the pond is to fish? What if you keep catching them? I'd say, in my own opinion, keep them in the backyard pond since they are the stars of this entire operation. Maybe thats just me
BamaBass, it’s easy to see that suggestions for the logo are all over the place! Add a bass jumping, change the bird to an owl, and go for it! All of your pets will be in it (unless you want to add ducks!) and you have it all covered.
Wow! It looks amazing! I'm so happy! I'm getting greedy for fish stocking! Please talk a little about the next steps after the pond is sufficiently full. Ex: aquatic plants, amphibian introductions, etc. Will the first fish be feeders? Will you supplement the food for all the creatures for a year or so? What is your plan for foliage on the banks eventually? More young trees, bushes? Guess I'm lookin' for a pond Q&A! I hope I'm watching your vids for years!
Getting close now! Fun to see it fill up. Wow that huge pond can hold so many fish and turtles and ... all sorts of animals. This is enormous. Lookin' forward to seeing it mature.
So exciting to see the pond filling. After all the effort y’all put in to make it watertight, I know you must have been sweating a little bit, waiting to be sure it would hold water.
I suggest looking into a ventrac for cutting on slopes. There is a large selection of attachments available and a great track record for performance. Looking for to stocking the pond.
Put a T on the tip of all the pole so that the owls can rest easier and help you manage the field mice issue.
Hell yes
About 5x taller too so they can see more area.
Would also make spottin them or knowing where they are easier.
Instead of just random poles, what would be other ideal perching installations that could be added around the pond? Technically yes. The more the better. But a few guppies/minnows and crawfish don’t need huge plantings. Especially with no aquatic predators.

Since it's a fishing pond, you should add fish into the logo - or even, make them a main piece - the tree is no longer there, so the logo could be wood / fish, but I guess it would be confusing for people looking for the tree and learning it's no longer there....
Can't wait to see those Bass in there. I'm hoping I win one of your contest to come out there and fish LOL
Only if these fish knew how famous they are! They’d probably be demanding a 10 acre pond, lol!
On your logo You should put a fisherman casting out a line and bass in the water! Looks so good!
I enjoy the night shots of you talking about the animals. I'm amazed by owls and they are interesting. My grandma loved owls. They are funny how you see nothing but their glowing eyes and when they take off and you see glowing eyes flying very trippy. Lol
When you mentioned Hooter being on the pole that you use for timelapses, I had a couple thoughts:
1) Perhaps a small horizontal bar at the top (making a T) to help them perch more easily.
Awesome!!!
Best series on YT right now
Make the negative space in the tree look like something. The logo looks good too. Fun videos and educational, thanks from Oregon.
I honestly get such an at peace feeling when I watch your videos man. Thank you
I wouldn’t stock my pond with predator fish like bass until you have stocked it with your forage fish.
Stock peacock bass
Stop the cap
The size difference in the owls could be age or sex. Generally in birds of prey, females are larger. Owls are usually solitary hunters. Make sure if you have pest control for the mice that it is eco friendly because if the owls eat a poisoned mouse, the owls will die. Owls are your best pest control.
I'm kind of curious, why put Bonnie and Clyde in the pond if the intention of the pond is to fish? What if you keep catching them? I'd say, in my own opinion, keep them in the backyard pond since they are the stars of this entire operation. Maybe thats just me
I think he should put Moby in the pond instead. Just to see how big he can get
BamaBass, it’s easy to see that suggestions for the logo are all over the place!
Bamabass it's been long enough we need a new video. 😁
We need a bass in the Crimson Oak Farm Logo boss
Firs?

Ima runner ima track star
Pond is coming along great! That recipe looked amazing too. Gonna have to try that. Maybe incorporate a duck into your logo if possible?
His voice is so soothing I didn’t even skip the part about the knife set! 😂
Getting close now! Fun to see it fill up. Wow that huge pond can hold so many fish and turtles and ... all sorts of animals.
This is enormous. Lookin' forward to seeing it mature.
Absolutely love your set up and what you’ve got going on at your property !!!! Looks great.
Moby is a beast. He is going to love the pond. Can't wait to see what you do with mobys tank.
Got to see the pond fill, received a free recipe for grilling, and some nature show aswell 👍👍👍👍
That lighting from the storm was amazing
I love what your doing ! Keeping the family involved is priceless .thank you for sharing the pond build I really enjoy it
6:10. Next on BamaBass, name the mosquitos. Lol. Jus kiddin. 🤣😂🤣😅
Love the series and also I think a little owl sitting in the tree on the crimson oak farm Sign would be cool.
So exciting to see the pond filling. After all the effort y’all put in to make it watertight, I know you must have been sweating a little bit, waiting to be sure it would hold water.
Look’n more and more like a Pond with every post..Love the wildlife shots in every post. 🇺🇸👍
Waiting for your next video. Dying to know how is pond filling up
Yohoo where are you what happened to your pond
Pond looks great, and your logo is spot on, nice job👌👌👌👌
Very nice. Like the names you selected.
For the logo, you should have a spot in it for the owl. Maybe in the middle of the tree? Or something...
Love the logo for the pond. Maybe consider using the oak throne in the logo instead
Of the regular tree on the island? Love love the content!!
I suggest looking into a ventrac for cutting on slopes. There is a large selection of attachments available and a great track record for performance. Looking for to stocking the pond.
