The guy in the grey shirt needs to improve his position on the court when his partner in the white shirt serves. Grey shirt is covering the tram lines of the court like Fort Knox, leaving his partner to cover the rest of the 3/4 of their half of the court. 3 problems here, Grey shirt is covering a shot that is low percentage ie, the down the line shot over the highest part of the net, which is not the shot of choice for most returners in doubles. Covering this shot means grey shirt is going to miss a lot of opportunities to cross to intercept easy put-away volleys especially if his partner creates a forced error out of their opponents. Secondly, because Grey shirt is covering so far to the side, that leaves a much bigger area for a returner to hit the ball back over, (now 3/4 of that side of the court instead of 1/2). It gives the returner more chance to hit returns back harder with less fear of the net player intercepting their return because he knows Grey shirt is no where in the picture. Which leads to the third point which is more applicable if grey shirt plays with a serve and volleyer as a partner. It’s hard enough to cover your half of the court steaming in for a volley after your own serve without having to now cover a portion of your net partner’s side as well. Smart returners will punch their returns straight down the middle because he knows Grey shirt won’t touch it, but now Grey shirt’s serve and volley partner needs to run in from his corner of the court after his serve and have cover the centre line too in order to make a volley. Trust me, that’s not easy to do when you’re also thinking that the return can come back at you at your feet or wide.

Great analysis!
Agreed. I thought at first maybe gray shirt is afraid of being hit by his partner serve but he also hugs the alleys at all times.
Thank you for the in depth analysis but their names are posted on the screen why are you calling them by shirt color
Don’t see any footwork!
