The Touhou rabbit hole is so massive that even Megaten has its own little tunnel on the side. Also, sweet to see that Eternights got so dang big, though the MC could use a hat or jacket. Advent Crossroad looks neat, purely from the monster designs and the battle system. I'd definitely love to see a second video on this.
"pointing at the screen when bucket girl showed up" Reference to MarshSMT? That ended up being his favorite character he carried with him the whole game, as another non-Touhou fan.
Speaking of Undertale, I always joke that deltarune feels like toby fox making a persona game. I mean -being in a spirit world that is heavily influenced by the in-universe real world and can be reflected by mind -the silent protagonist that act goofy and some god inside (also Kris looks similar and even act similar to persona 3 protagonist) -susie being both the best friend and the punk party member( she basically Ryuji) -ralsei being "mascot" helper that having some existential stuff going on -noelle acting very similar to high priestess characters , especially Maki from persona 1
Honestly, I never thought about undertale being inspired by smt, mainly because I never saw the interview where Toby said it was, but even without seeing that, when I think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense
I'M actually developing an SMT inspired game! It's called "Chronicles Meteorfall" and features press turn, a job class system, and a skill equip system similar to Digital Devil Saga. It's currently about 20% done though the actual game page is very unfinished with outdated screenshots.
I’d also like to mention the Fan Game Megami Tensei: Neuroheroine and its sequel. I know that it’s not “inspired” and just directly based on, but I’d like more people to know about it.
Touhou fangames tend to be pretty easy to get into as long as they don't follow the original Bullet Hell style, specially with how many are inspired by other game series, pokemon, super robot wars, etrian odyssey, mega man, feels like there's a touhou version of everything
I appreciate when people bring attention to more obscure titles like this. I do have to ask, what are all the games you showed off at the beginning of the video? I would appreciate more videos like this in the future, but I'd like to know where you got footage for some of that. The only one I recognized was Legrand Legacy. the rest of that looks interesting, but I can't find anything based on the stuff I saw in the clips. I'm assuming it's stuff that's in early access or not precisely MegaTen enough, but I'd still like to know.
The one at 0:13 is World of Horror. The one at 0:43 is Legrand Legacy. The one at 1:03 is Synthesis. The one at 1:11 is Mato Anomalies. And the one at 1:23 is DemonSchool.
Oddly enough, Touhou 17 could arguably be considered SMT inspired. It's revealed that the animal spirits operate on the rule of the strong preying on the weak and Keiki tried to bring order at the expense of freedom. The side materials explaining that the human spirits' condition aren't much different from how they used to be further emphasizes the point. It seems Artificial Dream noticed some parallels because either Yacchie and Keiki can be fought depending on your dialogue choices as a reference to the allignment.
I'd certainly be up for more videos like this one. Despite enjoying the aesthetics of the extended SMT series Woodsalt and Advent Crossroad fell completely off of my radar.
Experience Inc. makes a lot of oldschool dungeon crawlers that play like old SMT games. No recruitable characters it's more like Etrian Odyssey where you make your own team usually. They're very underrated developers!
Mato Anomalies. Many people compare it to SMT but I didn’t include it in this video because I haven’t found any official sources claiming it was an inspiration. It’s not a bad game though
I’ve always been a fan of learning enemy skills in games, so yeah, it’s a pretty solid mechanic. Helped a lot when I finally got my protagonist a decent healing spell
While I'm not CuRRENTLY developing a SMT inspired game jsut yet (got an rpg to finish making first), i do have ideas for games inspired by elements of SMT vagely -a game series about a world of mosnter girls and protagonists who fight alongside them against other monster girls. the SMT inspiration is in using mythology and stories in general as isnpiration for characters, such as dracula as a dragon centaur vampire and lucifer as a red skinned demon woman in a nice suit and santa claus as a skeleton girl of a sort. -I also had this idea for a more heavilly SMT influenced game about what appears to be a mysterious girl wearing a fake moustache who gets the help of various characters in resolving a conspiracy involving people using pages from a cursed book to summon demons.
Which is funny because Eternights’ focus on comedy and a popstar character often makes it feel like 4 was one of the bigger inspirations for the final game lol
There's a game called Mind Zero that is inspired by Persona. Gameplay is similar to early entries, but the Persona stand ins, Minds, play a bigger role in combat. The Minds absorb damage for you and have their own unique skills, and then they are not out/defeated you have to fight as a regular human.
would you be able to list off the in development/unreleased games whose footage you've used in this video, the isometric SRPG game in particular looks interesting
I'm not a game developer but I play a lot of D&D. And I really want to make my own SMT inspired campaign, specifically one based on Digital Devil Saga. I've even began making my own fan demons with entries and design notes.
Oh hey, I just bought Eternights on sale more recently because the price dropped enough (for Steam / Steam Deck) and the reviews were decent. I'm really interested in giving it a shot at some point.
I would totally love a part 2! Undertale is the only one I knew from this list, but Eternights did grab my attention, granpa's porn jokes aside.. Great video as always 🩷
