This movie didn't even do that well. The 6 year gap since M:I-2 and Tom Cruise's public antics at the time(couch jumping, Scientology, contentious interview with Matt Lauer) hurt the box office. I was surprised when they did a 4th one with almost another 6 year gap and Cruise pushing 50, but that wound being a great decision given how successful Ghost Protocol turned out.

Abrams loves to start stories in media res, then do the "XX Hours Earlier" title card. That was how half the episodes of ALIAS started. In fact, ALIAS is how Abrams got the M:I gig. Cruise saw several episodes of the show and said, "This guy would be perfect for the next film." And Abrams was perfect for it. He set the basic style and tone for the rest of the franchise. He doesn't get enough credit for that.

17:05 this BRIDGE scene takes place in my city of Virginia Beach, about 15 minutes from where I live. It's the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, which is an underwater tunnel system in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, which is actually a 15 mile bridge with four separate underwater tunnels. The tunnels only take up about 5 of the 15 miles. We see memes about people saying they would never drive through it, but they don't know we have two more bridge tunnels EVERYONE has to go through every day as we are a HUGE military area with Navy(my dad), Air Force, etc.. When we saw this we laughed, because some shots were filmed on the bridge, but we could easily tell when it was not the actual thing. Especially the fake license plates.

    • @sterow
      @sterow Рік тому

Isn’t this the same bridge used in True Lies and Licence to Kill? That was always my understanding- and that movies mostly use an old disused bridge beside a rebuilt one.

Abrams *is* the lens flare guy, BTW. Also, he did both direct and produce the first Chris Pine Star Trek movie, in addition to Into Darkness, as well as the first and third of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. He is also actually the *creator* of "Alias," as well as an earlier show starring Keri Russell (Agent Farris) called "Felicity."
Hoffman is actually reuniting with Cruise here, with the two of them having made the all-time great drama magnolia in 1999, which coincidentally (since George mentioned it) is by Paul Thomas Anderson, director of Boogie Nights.
Can't wait for you guys to progress through 4-7 -- the movies after this are all varying degrees of great. In a pretty low-key way, this also kicks off the tradition of Tom Cruise doing major stunts in these. In this case, I believe you're correct that he did the Shanghai building jump for real, and that then the cuts are greenscreen. It does become much more obvious in the subsequent movies what he did for real, though.

Great script, yes, but JJ Abrams direction feels way too frenetic and jarring at times, like he is trying way too hard to keep an audiences attention. (Shaky cam, quick cut edits throughout every action scene) Maybe it was his intention to make the audience feel anxiety throughout, but I much preferred the calm, cool and collected yet fun nature of the 2nd movie more.

What I like are the little touches a attention to details here and there that totally sell their real life training. At 6:04 when Ethan tosses Lindsay a weapon and she starts shooting - watch her eyes. It is INSANELY difficult to *not blink* when firing a weapon. It's instinctive - everyone does it automatically - and it takes a LOT of concentration and training to stop yourself from doing it. The fact that they made the effort to address that... *chef's kiss*

    • @ScarlettM

In "Along Came the Spider", one of the leads (playing FBI) surprised her weapon's instructor because she would not blink when firing her weapon. They told her is really rare and hard to do. Mel Gibson is Lethal Weapon blinks like crazy for a sniper.

Two days before she passed, my friend and her fiance got married there, so that her mother could be present.

When they built the new one (which I think you see in the background) they kept large sections of the old one intact. I know I'm not a patron, but, I do have a movie recommendation for you guys. BTW, I am a HUGE FAN and watch most of your vids. You are my favorite reviewers because you are smart enough to "get" what you're watching. Anyway, please check out the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Johnny Depp is amazing and it's based on a "true" story. Love to see what you think, thanks.

Love this Impossible Mission. Another great movie with Philip Seymour Hoffman (and Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts and others) is Charlie Wilson's War (2007). Cheers!

I'm from Rome and happen to live very close to the vatican wall DHL scene they shot. Happens every, damn, day. And just like you've seen it. Mark Hamill once said "I'd do the trench run 3 more times but no way I'm driving in Rome." I know Mark, I know...
Yeah I'm not super sure about the inside walls of the Vatican City itself, but looks pretty accurate to me. The Vatican museum is the real thing for sure. The only mistake is the line to enter that museum coils 3 times around the entire walls! They certainly had restrictions to some degree, but... money.

I loved 3. It’s one of my favorite films of the series. I don’t know if it’s the best in the series because, seriously, they only get better from here, but I always feel like it’s the turning point of Mission Impossible’s streak of making bolder, more exciting, and more tense films from here on out. The stunts get better, the action scenes get more creative, and the stories just start getting even more multi-layered and intense.
By comparison, 3 feels more personal and smaller scale and that’s what I like about it. It’s like the relative calm before the bigass storm.

Easily the worst in the series.

Simone I'm pretty sure you just described Karl Pilkington's film idea about killing off Tom Cruise and having someone else play him 😂😂😂

JJ Abrams is the one guy using the same formula to Star Trek and to Star Wars several years later, destroying the second just because of that. What a pity. But it happened to save M:I movies, so great. This is the first of the languaje that will become M:I movies.
