Amazing how you surpass the photo. It's pure magic to see how you paint closer and closer to the picture but don't stop but go on and ...wow. A joy to watch.
I like how you take a lot of "liberty" with colours and contrast and don't try to stick to an impossible boring realism. This to me means you are allowing yourself to have fun too. Good job!
Thanks for the compliments. They make sharing worth while. My hope is that my work will inspire budding artists, and help those who are trying to improve their technique. Most importantly, have fun painting.
@chuckiiman Oil paint can get very expensive, so I advise that you start with certain colors that fit your needs, and slowly add to your pallet as you find colors you can use often. My basic pallet for skin tones is Raw umber, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ocher, Cad Red Light, Sap Green, Cerulean Blue, and Cobalt Blue. Plus, of course, Black & white. You might use this as a starting point, but find other colors that suit you better. There is no perfect pallet for everyone.
Thanks for the compliment. I only paint flowers when thay are a part of a portrait. I just love doing people, along with anything that enhances the picture of people.
@chuckiiman I buy prestretched, primed canvas. Sometimes (not always) I will coat the canvas with a gray gesso, if I want the mood of the painting to be dark. I find it hard to bring bright colors back up if I have a dark undercoating.
Yes, I was born with a talent, but without diligent practice and a lot of study, I probably would have just as much difficulty drawing a stick man as anybody else.
Hello Sir, I agree with you 110%. I too feel that born with a talent, especially craving to achieve perfection in portrait painting. Worked several commissioned portrait paintings as well as did for family members and grand kids...and yet fumbling to get more satisfaction. Keep watching experts like you all and try to understand how to improve my work. Nice finished work, I really appreciate your work. Thanks for sharing .
@irudley Thanks, this really helps. I've been using cotton duck double acrylic titanium primed acid free canvas from Pearl Paint but notice that the paint is being absorbed by the canvas. I've heard that some artists use a gesso to combat the problem but I wasn't sure if you used a gesso because it appears that you don't have that problem. I've been using acrylic but hope to branch out into oil. Do you recommendations as to a oil set or paint I could purchase? Thanks again and great work.
Amazing work... I am an acrylic artists, and am wanting to get into oils but not sure if I should buy the kind that are mixable with water or traditional oil paints. Do you have any advice? THANKS!
Beautiful. I really enjoyed your skillful strokes like a Samurai. I am developing a painting app. Not a drawing app but strictly painting. I hope you test my app when it's ready. I want skillful painters like you to try my app and create an account on my website so the world sees your videos.
@thedankinfidel I use mainly sables, but I don't think that information is very usefull. You should be asking more questions about finding out how to train your mind to see and translate shapes in nature into shapes on a canvas. I could use paint rollers and kleenex, and do a nice portrait if I had to.
If you are using a video projector to sketch the foundation drawing, you can make it any size you want. If you are sketching it in by eye, the first 4 size markings for the head, (Height and width) will determine the size, proportion, and placement of the head on the canvas, no matter what the size of the subject is, either from life or from a photo.
I seriously doubt the your app will be able to go through the millions of calculations and judgment calls of the human brain that go into each brush stroke. Even no 2 brains will make exactly the same stroke of size, value, color and placement every time. I think your app will probably produce a picture, but the individual creativity of the human brain will be absent. However, it might produce a very interesting style of work. Good luck.
WOW, you must have great critical vision to pick up something I missed. I'm impressed and would love to see some samples of your work. I gave up, long ago, trying to compete with a camera for accuracy. Today I'm happy with just getting close. Sorry to disappoint you.

Wow..you sound very much like me! I too love to do portraits rather than landscape or still life painting!

Both. I mix first, but rarely get it exactly right till I see the color it will be next to on the painting.

@SophieChappers It's oil paint. I explained in some of my other replies how and why I use oils.

do you mix colors before you put the paint on the canvas or do the colors mix on the canvas as you put them together thanks
I never tried the water soluable oils, so I have no opinion about them.
@beerrab Probably about 30 days. There’s a lot going into it.
Gostaria de saber como vc faz o esboço da figura antes de pintar.Qual é a sua técnica?
Hi Irv, do you prime the canvas before you paint? If so, what do you use? Thanks.
Impressive
rsss Obrigada!!
Lovely but is this oil or acrylic?
Oil on canvas. You can't blend very well with acrylic. It dries too quickly.
Oh OK that does explain the great results :) thank you
Bravo!
Good
how do I enlarge a portrate thanks mike
