Sailor's Hornpipe: Melodic Banjo Lesson

Sailor's Hornpipe is a well known, traditional hornpipe, played at an up-beat tempo, in the key of G (standard tuning). With a jolly melody and a focus on the melodic technique, the tune features arpeggios, some great scale movement, modulation and movement up & down the neck of the banjo. If you're familiar with the melodic G major scale, it will help you get started, as I'd suggest this tune is suited to the advancing intermediate picker. As always, in this lesson we'll break down the tune and look at some helpful tips.

Thanks for this easy lesson! I am 65 yrs old and left handed!? I live in Alaska and have been playing for about 5 years so everything is against me !? So the easiest the better for me!

Well actually...I've never heard the Bill Keith version, I'm sure it's great though! This arrangement is modelled from how I pick the tune on the mando, with a couple of tweaks to suit the banjo. :)
